[MOSAIC] Differentiating Instruction

2008-08-30 Thread Hamilton, Whitney
Hello, all. I'm new to the group and seeking fresh ideas on differentiation.
I am in the process of earning my Rank I certification through a program
offered in Kentucky called CEO (Continuing Education Option). I've chosen to
concentrate my studies on reading and differentiation. My goal is to increase
my knowledge of teaching reading as well as how to differentiate my reading
instruction so that my students' will benefit.

I spent all summer reading almost anything recommended on teaching reading but
I'd like to hear how you meet the needs of all learners in your classrooms.

Thanks,
Whitney

Hi Whitney, Leveled books, guided reading groups, and different options for
activities, all allow for differentiation in the teaching of reading. The
crucial key to differentiation is knowing each of your students as readers and
keeping records of strengths, strategies used and taking this information to
provide for the needs of all students. The DRA is a great and easy way to do
this but there are lots of other tools available to give you formal snapshots
of your children as readers. Hope this helps.

I too do guided reading groups. The students are grouped by a combo. of
their DRA level and DIBELS scores. I have 4 small groups, I meet with the 2
lower groups 3 times a week and the 2 higher groups 2 times a week. I also
use DSA to determine what spelling patterns I need to work on. In my lower
groups, I usually have to start out with reviewing phonics and then we
gradually move into decoding and fluency. On the other hand, my top group
is way beyond that, so we work on harder comprehension skills like
synthesizing and inferring, I also do literature studies and author studies
with that group. My mid-high group- we work on an array of things from
fluency to story elements, predicting, visualizing, etc. I teach 3rd grade
in a very diverse school, therefore we have very diverse learners. The way
I see it is that I can only meet the needs of ALL of my students through
guided reading! It is a lot of work and planning in the beginning, but once
you know your students as readers, what comes next, seems to get easier!

With my K kids I do the comprehension and think alouds with the whole group.
I grab small groups to work on surface structure systems (phonics, phonemic
awareness) as needed.

DSA is Developmental Spelling Assessment...There are 4 stages of spelling,
and this assessment allows you to see what stage of spelling your students
are in, as well as what "features" (spelling patterns) they have in place
and which ones they need instruction. This is not a complex assessment, and
we find it very useful in planning our starting point for word study. The
book that we use is *Word Journeys*...hope this helps!

I know this is an old post, but I am always catching up with never enough

out there for VOCABULARY assessments??? Specifically looking for 6th grade.

Thanks,

[MOSAIC] differentiating instruction with a common novel

Hello,
Has anyone differentiated instruction with one common novel for an entire
mixed ability classroom?  I am preparing research on this endeavor.  Thanks for

Nope, but can talk about using multiple books at differentiated levels around a
central theme.

Re: [MOSAIC] differentiating instruction with a common novel

2009-03-19 Thread demillereed
Differentiating with books on a similar theme can be very effective.? A
downside can be thaat the struggling readers, yet again, are not exposed to the
same level of vocabulary, syntax and the richness of a grade level or higher
knowledge base.? I have seen teachers send home the book on tape or CD for a
preread for readers who may not be up to the reading level but who have no
difficulty with listening comprehension.? That's a great way to expose students
who often have less contact with complex text to a richer vocabulary and
knowledge base.? This can be done discreetly if the kids are old enough to care
or notice.? This is yet another reason to not engage in oral reading at sight
(round robin). If there is to be any chances for students to read aloud, give
them rehearsal time, choose a piece you know the student can read and/or let
the struggling reader know ahead of time what their piece to read aloud to be
is and help them rehearse it. Sometimes I ask readers to find a paragraph or
page that they really liked and prepare to be able to read it to the class.?

Hope this helps.
