Please read the email below and donate now >> Dear Patricia, "This is the Western Hemisphere's tsunami." More than 2 million people have been affected by yesterday's earthquake in Haiti. Your help is urgently needed to help save lives. Donate now to Oxfam's Haiti Earthquake Emergency Response. Last night's earthquake in Haiti has left the capital city of Port- au-Prince in ruins. The damage is catastrophic; more than 2 million people have been affected, but the human toll is still unknown. Haiti's president has said the impact on the country is "unimaginable" and estimates that thousands have died. Donations are urgently needed to rush aid to the area – please give now >> The initial earthquake struck just before sundown and as many as 28 powerful aftershocks continued throughout the night – the darkness made initial recovery efforts nearly impossible. Oxfam has four offices in Haiti and over 200 highly-experienced aid workers on the ground. They are already responding to the situation where our assistance is most needed, but we need your help immediately – these first hours are critical for saving lives. Donate now and help us respond to this emergency. Today, our emergency response teams are working with partners to assess damage by helicopter – we already know that all water systems in the capital have been destroyed. Emergency supplies, like clean water, temporary shelters, and sanitation equipment are already en route from our base in Panama. [MOSAIC] Fwd: workshop
Hi Jan, I pick my partnerships. I watch the children for a while and see for myself who I think should be paired together. I don't even consider letting the children pick their own. It can just cause too much drama. It's easier to pair them up myself, and they have no problems with that because we set the tone in the beginning that everyone works together in our classroom. We are all here to help each other. -Original Message- From: jefjar...@comcast.net To: Mosaic: A Reading Comprehension Strategies Email Group Sent: Fri, Sep 4, 2009 8:02 am Subject: Re: [MOSAIC] workshop Hi Jan, I pick my partnerships. I teach fourth grade with the Workshop model. I choose the Response Partners based on student input. I have them respond to four questions and write the names on an index card. 1. Who is someone you could work with? 2. Who is someone you don't know well but you might like to work with? 3. Who is someone you would probably goof off with? 4. Who is someone you would not work well with? Then I pair the students up based on this input. I often keep them together for at least half the year. Eastern Daylight Time Subj: [MOSAIC] Read alouds My topic deals with finding out how crucial or important it is to start reading aloud to children before they enter school. Oh my yes!! it is of the utmost importance to start reading with kids as early as possible. It creates an unbelievable bond between mom and child, fosters the love of reading, and, in my opinion, gives them that all important "edge" before they begin formal education. I remember reading aloud to my soon to be 30 year old daughter when she was even less than 2 years old, and we used to have amazing conversations about the characters, problems, etc. To this day, she is an avid reader, and she recalls many of her favorite early childhood picture books. I should know--it cost me a fortune getting copies from second-hand dealers online! Re: [MOSAIC] Fwd: Parent Literacy Night
Deb, A colleague and I have held several Family Literacy Nights that focused only on writing. We had parents and students participate in joint and independent writing activities that connected to family. We are planning another FLN on Nov. 5th, but are looking to include reading ideas as well. Would you be interested in sharing what you have done? The following are some websites we found helpful in planning from the writing perspective: www.californiawritingproject.org- They have an inexpensive booklet for parents that focuses on ways to encourage writing at home. We ordered and gave one to each family that attended. www.nwp.org- The National Writing Project website. Re: [MOSAIC] Fwd: Parent Literacy Night
I had a parent literacy night with the kids. I teach first... We used the book Grandfather Twilight... virtually a wordless but not quite ...we examined the pics and the kids taught the strategy of inferencing to the parents. They were grouped at a power table (five tables in all) parents and kids mixed. What I loved was that I did the minilesson... the kids did the guided model and then they broke into book clubs by table. The exchange was wonderful. In a message dated 9/28/2008 7:03:40 P.M. Re: [MOSAIC] Fwd: Parent Literacy Night
Deb, I have had great success with the book Halloween by Jerry Seinfeld. You can show the parents how they are making text to self connections throughout the book. Also, when I purchased the hardcover several years ago, it came with a cd of Seinfeld reading the story. The cd often brings back memories of the Seinfeld show, thereby introducing text to world connections. The kids love it too! Good luck. No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG. [MOSAIC] Fwd: [LIT] breast cancer research
- Original Message - From: Susan Flaherty <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, Literacy workshop , Middle Web List <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, Middle Web Reading and Writing <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, middle web topics \(IAN\) <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Fri, 26 Jan 2007 05:28 Subject: Fwd: [LIT] breast cancer research We need those of you who are great at forwarding on information with your e-mail network. Please read and pass this on. It would be wonderful if2007 were the year a cure for breast cancer was found This is one email you should be glad to pass on. The notion that we could raise $35 million by buying a book of stamps is powerful! As you may be aware, the US Postal Service recently released its new "Fund the Cure" stamp to help fund breast cancer research. The stamp was designed by Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, Maryland. It is important that we take a stand against this disease that affects so many of our Mothers, Sisters and Friends. Instead of the normal 37 cents for a stamp, this one costs 40 cents The additional 3 cents will go to breast cancer research A "normal" book costs $7.40. This one is only $8.00. It takes a few minutes in line at the Post Office and means so much. If all stamps are sold, it will raise an additional $35,000,000 for this vital research. Just as important as the money is our support. What a statement it would make if the stamp outsold the lottery this week. What a statement it would make that we care. I urge you to do two things TODAY: 1. Go out and purchase some of these stamps. 2. E-mail your friends to do the same. Many of us know women and their families whose lives are turned upside-down by breast cancer. It takes so little to do so much in this drive. We can all afford the $0.60. Please help & pass it on. ___ The Literacy Workshop ListServ http://www.literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/ lit_literacyworkshop.org. Hi Lori, I am a first year teacher, teaching Grade 5. I just joined the Mosaic reading list and have read some of your messages. I would love it if you could send me any of the resources that would be beneficial for me to have (eg. T-T Tee Tables, elements of reflectiyou think on for poetry, etc.). Sandra, In response to you pressing a child for his connection I have just come away from a writing workshop with Carl Anderson and one of his points was not to have a predetermined mindset of "conferencing lessons" ( like teachers often do when creating minilessons for their units of study) but rather to ask the student what he is working onWhat students may mean to do is not necessarily reflected in their writing even though they may understand the skill that would make them better writers. I also teach first grade and kids' inexperience for executing new and novel strategies does not necessarily mean that they don't understand these strategies. Your comments once again reminded me of that strong reader/writer connection and that it is not necessarily the content of what you are teaching but more importantly the structured framework you set up to help you teach a concept. ___ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org. Hello... I I am back after a long break... Don't you just love that book "Ink Drinker" I read this book to my 4/5 class this year and they absolutely disolved it. The sequels City of Ink Drinkers, Straw for Two and there is another one which I forget the name of ??? are great follow ups but... wow... especially I feel for boys who do not have that reading bug yet it certainly makes an impression... I think there are plenty of books that you could read however to your grade 2's --- I have taught there for a few years... I really enjoy "one tiny ant", which you could also read "the ant bully" with and make a connection to --- then you could tie this in to the text to self and text to world connection... you could hit them all at once... I have also done the series of Eve Bunting books... The wall, the smoky night, A day's work, Fly Away Home. Kevin Henkes ties into friendship and feelings (health unit - cross curricular)Chrysanthemum, Julius, the Baby of the World, Owen, and Sheila Ray the Brave which are great to use as T-T connections but, as we all know Text to text soon leads us to all sorts of wonderful and wild connections that NONE of us thought of before... how GRAND is that!!! There are other things of course that you can do other than the straight AUTHOR study. One of the things that I do daily ... and I have done this in the early drades as well - is to give them a poem first thing in the morning - rather than morning math or morning fact or what have you it is morning poety... I have a different student read the poem (not in unison ) Unison reading is counteractive to fluency. About 5 different students a day... But then I have them paste this poem in their poetry journals and use the elements of reflection that they have posted on the front cover of their notebooks. These I will attach for you...:) They LOVE doing these and it calms the whole class as they enter before any subject. Ihope this has helped...I do have a T-t list of picture book literature somewhere in my files... I will pull this out for you this week... My son is having his tonsils and adnoids out tomorrow and I am off for the day.. however... The reading lady (we know her well ) :) smile I am attaching her T-T Tee Tables for you ( totally invaluable for the children to understand in regards to organizing their thoughts - in addition to her game plan... :) Good Luck... Sorry I am so wordy...
