[MOSAIC] in support of ar

2006-10-14 Thread Cindy
I am with you, Rosie. I am having a hard time fitting everything in as it is.
One of our grade level teachers really focuses on their percentile rankings for
their tests. She keeps kids scoring high, but she also usually gets the higher
kids.

Rosie, my schedule is (approximately) 8-9:45 reading, spelling, phonics or
word work, 15 min. recess, AR from 10-11:00, lunch till 11:45, math after lunch
for 45 min to 1 hour, English for 30-45 min. then Science or Social studies
till school is out. It is tough to get it all in. Through the efforts of many
teachers, however, our AR time is held as almost sacred. Several schools in
our district have gone to literacy blocks. Strangely enough, these schools
have principals who look down on the AR program. In some of those schools, the
kids can only check out an AR book once a week when their class goes to
regular library class. Those schools are coincidently on probation. Say what
you
will about AR, we have put it to good use. Last year and this year (after NM
implementing a new state test) our two third grade classes have scored second
in the district in reading. Everything helps.

Wow! Where in the world do you get one hour a day for this? I have a
mandated 120 minute literacy block. A one hour math block. 30 minutes for
lunch,
30 minutes for resource classes and 30 minutes of mandated recess time.
That doesn't leave much time for Social Studies/Science.

We are supposed to give the students 30 minutes a day for reading. Mine
don't get that much time, and quite honestly most of them can't sit still that
long.

[MOSAIC] in support of AR

2006-10-09 Thread Mholley112
I was glad to see what Laura and Bill had to say about AR. Our district has
had AR for about 10 years. My school gives the kids an hour a day for AR. They
are free to come and go to the library at will during that time. We do not
give rewards for points other than recognition that they reached their goals.
We keep a "point club" board in the hall so they can see their progress. I
have to say that we don't have that problem with not wanting to read. Our kids
come back from summer asking the first day when we are going to start AR. We
have a well stocked library full of fiction and lots of nonfiction. Other
than trying to help them choose books they can successfully read and
understand
(and yes, while challenging them as well) our kids are free to choose what
they want to read- at their interest level. I don't take grades on any part of
my AR. I use it as that minimum of 60 minutes of self-selected reading
recommended daily (Allington). Teachers who have been there longer than me
(7years)
have told me that after adopting AR for supplemental reading, they saw a
huge difference in students' reading abilities because of the extra reading
they
do. In fact, my plan is to use this time to reinforce the strategies and
conference with the kids. Everything is already in place-the kids have that
hour
set aside already with a ready supply of reading material.
