[mou-net] Bemidji CBC

2008-12-29 Thread Larson Kelly

Belated report of the 30th Annual Bemidji CBC, held December 20th.
Yes, it was snowing, and yes, the roads were more foul than fowl.
Despite less than favorable conditions our brave little group managed
to track down 36 species for the day. Thank you to those dedicated
birders who took time away from their busy holiday schedules to
assist with the count this year!

Highlights of the count include:
Pine (3) and Evening Grosbeak (1)
White-winged Crossbill (31)
Hoary Redpoll (1)
Red-bellied (1) and Black-backed (1) Woodpecker
American Robin (32)
White-throated Sparrow (1)
Northern Cardinal (1)
Ring-necked Pheasant (1)

Off to Santa Barbara, CA tomorrow to help with their CBC on the 3rd.
Hoping for better weather this year. Last year's CBC was held between
unusually heavy rains causing mudslides, flooding, road wash-outs,
and some of the gnarliest waves that surfers have seen there in
years. Pretty bizarre for an area that seems to be suffering from
perpetual drought...They managed to tally 206 species, even after
canceling the pelagic boat trip!

[mou-net] New snowy at MSP?

2008-12-29 Thread jeff fischer
Today I stopped by the MSP airport after work to try and get some more pictures
of the snowy owl. I did manage to find a snowy on the field across from the
Fedex building near the end of the cargo road. Except I do not believe that
this is the same snowy that I photographed last week. This bird was not in the
best place to photograph, on the ground on the other side of a chainlink fence
and quite a ways away but this new bird was definitely a mature male, since he
appears to have very little barring. The one that I photographed last week had
extensive barring. I am not sure if the airport is big enough to support
territory for two snowies or if this new bird is just passing through or took
the territory from the other bird. I will post the new pictures as well as one
that I took last week for comparison on the blog as soon as I get the new pics
cut for Internet resolution.

I also got some pictures of the Prescott harlequin duck this evening. It was
some distance away but I did get a couple of OK shots before the light
completely faded.

Thanks,
Jeff Fischer

[mou-net] Crosby Farm Snipe

2008-12-29 Thread Julian Sellers
I just noticed the Wilson's Snipe photo by Jeff Evans on the Sightings page
of the MOU web site. In the caption, Jeff states: Found in open water on
north shore of crosby farm lake Ramsey County Dec 22nd. Thank you, Jeff. The
location is within the St. Paul (North) Christmas Bird Count circle. Since
none of our teams found a snipe on 12/20, the day of our count, I will add this
as a count week species (species found during the three days before and the
three days after the count but not on the day of the count).

[mou-net] Prescott, Wisconsin observations

2008-12-29 Thread Tom Bell
Help, I got zero response from my earlier plea for bird observations
made on the St. Croix River in the Prescott, Wisconsin area. The
Hastings/Etter CBC was on Dec. 27, and in the morning there were few
to no gulls present. The count week of three days before the count
day and three afterwards would make it open for observations from Dec.
24 to 30th. Documentation would probably be required for the not
common gulls, but I know that some of you have pictures and others
have the expertise to differentiate gull species. Also if you can
recall if the birds were on the Minnesota half or the Wisconsin half
or both, that would be helpful.

We thank any that take the time to respond to this plea.

Subject: Gollden Eagle Field Trip added

Greetings Golden Eagle Aficionados,

of snow, I have added another field trip for people to attend.
It will be JANUARY 3 2009 meeting at 1:00 at the National Eagle
Center in Wabasha MN.
This is a great learning opportunity to either brush up on your
Golden Eagle ID skills or to learn them for the first time. All are
welcome to attend this free event.
I have close to 30 routes set up ( 26 last year) for the
Wintering Golden Eagle Survey. So thanks for your help, if you have
e-mailed me I have you down, but I am still waiting to hear from
some people, so to guarantee a route, please let me know if you can
help this year.

Re: [mou-net] Crosby Farm Snipe

2008-12-29 Thread linda whyte
Would the exact location be the tiny, raised terrace-pond, formed by
beaver work, on the north shore of the larger lake? (This little spot
often has open water when the rest of the lake freezes, and attracts
both ducks and mammals, but I haven't walked that side of the lake
recently.)

[mou-net] St. Paul (North) CBC Results

2008-12-29 Thread Julian Sellers
With nearly all reports in, 65 field participants and five feeder watchers
found 52 species in the St. Paul (North) CBC circle on Saturday, 12/20. That
is the lowest species total since 1996. We found 55 species last year. The
number of individual birds this year was 14,853, which is the lowest since 1993.

Highlights:
a.. Six Eastern Bluebirds at Thompson County Park in West St. Paul. Two more
bluebirds in the Phalen area are pending documentation. Only one Eastern
Bluebird has been reported before this on a St. Paul (North) CBC, in 1969.
b.. Three American White Pelicans, one Double-Crested Cormorant, and eight
Great Blue Herons at the Pig's Eye water treatment plant.
c.. 29 Trumpeter Swans--25 on Lake Vadnais and four at AHATS (Arden Hills
Army Training Site).
d.. Nine duck species (including two mergansers) .
  e.. Two Merlins
f.. 14 Northern Flickers (twice the highest previous total)
g.. 1069 American Robins (previous high was 658 in 2001). Most were feeding
on hackberries.
h.. Two Fox Sparrows at a feeder in Roseville
i.. 42 Pine Siskins in seven areas (scarce in recent years)
Misses:
  a.. Rough-legged Hawk
b.. Ring-billed Gull (only gulls were five Herrings)
  c.. Eastern Screech-owl
  d.. Barred Owl
e.. Northern Shrike (one in count week)
  f.. Common Redpoll
Near Misses:
a.. Peregrine Falcon--one, in a north suburb, not at the usual downtown and
Ford Dam locations (but one at Ford Dam on 12/18).
  b.. Ring-necked Pheasant--one
  c.. Red-breasted Nuthatch--one
Count Week Birds:
  a.. One Wilson's Snipe
  b.. One Long-eared Owl
  c.. One Northern Shrike

[mou-net] Overwintering Robins in southern MN

2008-12-29 Thread Bob Dunlap
It appears that there is a massive overwintering effort by American
Robins in southern MN this winter. I have been seeing several flocks
daily in the Mankato/St. Peter area (total probably around several
hundred birds), and they seem to be just as common in the Twin Cities
judging from the CBC results I've seen thus far. There are usually
several locations in southern MN each winter that attract
overwintering robins, but so far this winter the robins are literally
everywhere.

My question is this: is this something new, or have there been similar
overwintering efforts in the past?

If you have any relevant information about this, please share! Thanks.

Bob Dunlap, Nicollet County
