[mou-net] Kestrel Watch

2009-04-30 Thread linda whyte
For anyone not aware of it, The Raptor Center is undertaking a study
to determine why they've had such a huge drop in kestrel admissions.
They are asking for citizen submissions of kestrel sightings to
Kestrel Watch that might include date, time, location, numbers, gender
if known, and any observed behaviors.
More information is at www.TheRaptorCenter.org, or contact kest...@umn.edu.

2009-04-30 Thread john c. nelson
A number of folks have come to see the Summer Tanager this morning-all
successful. A bonus was a female Blue Grosbeak confirmed and
photographed by Jim Hollander and and Bob Janson. Itwas present for
only a feww minutes, but its call was heard by several others.
Also of note Brown Thrasher, Eastern Towhee, Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher,
House Wren, Ruby-Crowned Kinglet, Lincoln and White-Crowned Sparrow.

[mou-net] Redpoll/Hummingbird

2009-04-30 Thread Dennis and Barbara Martin
Had a Common Redpoll and a Ruby-throated Hummingbird at our feeders yesterday
and today. I wonder if those two species have ever met before. They weren't
here at exactly the same time so they technically have not met yet but they
were here within minutes of each other.

Hummingbird was our earliest date ever and obviously the redpoll each day
becomes the latest date ever. Does anybody else have redpolls in the southern
2/3rds of the state? I know there are a few left in the northern parts.

[mou-net] Late, and Sparse, Spring Migration (to date)

2009-04-30 Thread Pastor Al Schirmacher
Believe I'm observing a late, and somewhat sparse, migration here in central
Minnesota.

Despite the fact that I walk bird 5-6 days per week in 11 different
locations here in Sherburne/Mille Lacs Counties, numbers are substantially
lower than normal for the end of April. Selected observations (working
progressively through the MOU checklist):

* Single Green Heron, only 5-6 Great Blues

* No Ospreys

* Single Broad-winged Hawk (interestingly, appeared to be the dark phase)

* No Merlins

* Single Sora, no Virginias

* Only six shorebirds to date, no numbers to speak of

* Only two species of swallows

* Only two species of warblers (million Yellow-rumped, single Pine; would
often have Black White, N. Waterthrush and a couple of others by now)

* No Lark Sparrows yet; surprisingly, only low numbers of White-throated

* Bizarrely, only single Rusty Brewer's Blackbirds during their normal
migration window.

Such observations may mean nothing. They may mean progressive
blind/deafness at my advanced age of 50. Huge numbers may still be backed
up coming through (like the late warbler movement last year that resulted
in 23 species on the MOU Sherburne trip). Just wanted to share my
observations from this region.

Your observations welcome!

[mou-net] Rice Co. Hooded Warbler re-found

2009-04-30 Thread Dave Bartkey
Hi everyone,

I bumped into Bob Janssen and Dave Cahlander this afternoon at the Cannon
River Wilderness Park, west side. They were looking for the Hooded Warbler that
I had reported on Monday 4/27. While it wasn't in the spot that it was
originally seen, we were able to relocate it right by the parking lot this
afternoon at around 3:30 pm.

Other birds of interest in Rice Co. this morning included 2 Ovenbirds and
one, maybe more, Eastern Towhees on the east side of CRWP.

Good birding!

[mou-net] Brown Thrasher

2009-04-30 Thread Joshua Bailly
I saw a pair of brown thrashers while out looking today. Its a wonder
I saw anything. Once the fog cleared there was about a half hour of
clear skies then the wind started howling at 20-30 mph. I also saw
what I suspect was a gray catbird but the wind prevented a very good
look. Is a catbird a reasonable sighting for this time of the year in
Duluth?

This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, April 30th 2009.

A WORM-EATING WARBLER was reported on the 26th at the Eloise Butler bird
sanctuary in Minneapolis, but it has not been seen since. Nevertheless,
it was found along the northern-most path of the sanctuary near the
first bench past the shelter.

A SNOWY EGRET was seen on the 25th in Lyon County at the Coon Creek WMA.

Two YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were in a St. Louis Park, Hennepin
County yard on the 23rd near Minnehaha Creek and Brookview Drive.

On the 25th, a RED-THROATED LOON was at Little Rock Lake in Benton
County, seen from the park at the north end of the lake.

In Dodge County, 32 WILLETS were at the Claremont sewage ponds on April
30th.

On the 27th and again today, a HOODED WARBLER was at the Cannon River
Wilderness Park parking lot in Rice County.

An immature male SUMMER TANAGER was seen on the 29th and again today in
Blue Earth County at the feeders of John Nelson of Good Thunder. A
female BLUE GROSBEAK was also present there on the 30th. A WESTERN
TANAGER was reported on April 25th in St. Cloud, Stearns County, but I
have no specific location.

A few of the more common species reported over the past week include
CATTLE EGRET, AMERICAN AVOCET, UPLAND SANDPIPER, WHIP-POOR-WILL,
BLUE-HEADED VIREO, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, HOUSE WREN, GRAY CATBIRD,
BROWN THRASHER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER,
OVENBIRD, DICKCISSEL, INDIGO BUNTING, and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK.

The next scheduled update of this tape is Thursday, May 7th 2009.
