2009-05-05 Thread David A. Cahlander
An on-line forum has been added for the Minnesota Breeding Bird Atlas project.
From the main site:

http://mnbba.org

click on Discussion Forum.

Questions and comments can be made to this forum.

I'm not sure if the categories cover what we want to cover, but these are the
categories used by the Ohio BBA project.

Thanks.

[mou-net] Steele Co Whooping Cranes: Update

2009-05-05 Thread Howard Towle
The two Whooping Cranes reported this morning from just south of
Owatonna were still present this evening at 6:30 PM in the same field.
Does anyone know the origin of these birds? Are they part of the
Wisconsin flock that overshot their mark?

Thanks Ken!

Howard Towle
Golden Valley, MN

Two Whooping Cranes were first spotted by Emily Hutchins Monday
night around 7:30. They were flying over the intersection of Hwys.
218 and 14 on the south side of Owatonna. They landed in a green
meadow on the south side of 18th Street on the eastern edge of
Owatonna. They were still present at 7:30 Tuesday AM.

[mou-net] Harris's Sparrow - U of M - St. Paul campus

2009-05-05 Thread Scott Loss
This evening between 6:30 and 8:00, a Harris's Sparrow was present along the
east edge of the St. Paul campus "mall" (along Eckles Avenue in front of Coffee
Hall).  I saw the bird 3 different times, always in clear view on the pavement
of the street and on the nearby lawn.  It was hanging out with a group of
White-throated, White-crowned, and Chipping Sparrows.

[mou-net] Shorebird update- Kandiyohi co.

2009-05-05 Thread Randy Frederickson
The two piping plovers seen Sunday at Olson Lake WPA were NOT relocated
today but could still be present, as there was over 800 shorebirds this
evening. Today's highlights included: 104 wilson's phalarope (still no
red-necked), 81 dowitchers sp., 11 avocets, 2 golden plovers. Turnover rate
is very high, with lots of birds moving through. I would have liked to
count more species, but my fingers and toes were getting tired.

The banded piping plover west of Pennock WAS still present as of 6:00 pm
this evening.

For both these locations you are looking east, so afternoon/evening viewing
is much more productive.

Hi everyone,

I am reporting this for my friend Troy Flicek who went to Cody Lake this
evening looking for the previously reported American Avocet seen on 5/4. The
avocet appears to have moved on but there was a single Marbled Godwit present
in the same location along with many other shorebirds including lots of
Wilson's Phalaropes.

Good birding!

[mou-net] House sparrows

2009-05-05 Thread Donald Jones

Help!
Over the years I have tried to "chase" the house sparrows away. The
neighborhood Coopers Hawks have taken a couple but seem to prefer
other birds. I remove the nests and access to my house gutters and
such. Yet here we are again, a yard full of the little bastards. Does
anyone have a reliable way to get rid of them? Starlings are not a
problem but the HOSP are overwhelming my yard so much that I don't
dare put any food out in the feeders.

Much appreciated.

[mou-net] Say's Phoebe-Pope county

2009-05-05 Thread Dennis and Barbara Martin
Ron Erpelding called to report a Say's Phoebe that he found at 11:25 AM today.
The bird was still present until 11:45 when he left the area.

Directions are a bit complicated but the following should work.

Go south of Glenwood on State Hwy 104 about 7 1/2 miles to 255th St. Go west
about 1 1/2 miles to 245th Ave. Go south on 245th Ave to where 270th
intersects from the east. At this point there is a dead end road on the west
that is not on my county map. Go west about 1 mile to a area with grassland on
both sides of the road. Ron described the area as a bit depressed so somewhat
out of the wind that is blowing pretty good out there.

Ron reached the area by a slightly different way so hopefully these directions
did not hit any closed roads.

The bird was feeding on both sides of the road.
