[mou-net] Duluth Red Knot, Black-backed Woodpecker

2009-05-24 Thread Doug Kieser
Late saturday afternoon Mark Ochs and I observed an alternate-plumage Red Knot
at the 40th Ave. West impoundment in Duluth. Also among the 12 shorebird
species present here were 2 Stilt Sandpipers and 4 White-rumped Sandpipers.
Earlier in the afternoon we saw a male Black-backed Woodpecker at the Park
Point Recreation Area, east of the playground.
We spent the morning in the Sax-Zim bog area where highlights included several
minutes watching a singing Connecticut Warbler on the north side of county hwy
27, 50 yds east of county 83.
5 Sharp-tailed Grouse, 3 Upland Sandpipers in the field southwest of the county
hwys 52 - 208 intersection (late morning).
3 Upland Sandpipers and a few other shorebirds at the Meadowlands sewage pond.

[mou-net] Mille Lacs - Hooded and 17 other warblers

2009-05-24 Thread Pastor Al Schirmacher
18 warblers in Mille Lacs County yesterday, including a personal first
county Hooded Warbler at Milaca Hiking Trails. Strongest passerine action
was at Kathio State Park (the woods were alive with the sound of
music).

Ruddy Turnstones on Wigwam Bay, Mille Lacs Lake as well.

93 species (in the county) on the morning.

Mille Lacs Sherburne Counties

PS For those interested in chasing the Hooded - take 169 to 23, 23 west
through town, take the first right after the Rum River. Proceed to the end,
park in the lot on the left. Go right on the first trail next to the
cemetery (across the bridge twice), follow that along the river, take the
farthest left trail where it splits. Proceed about 150 feet or so, check
the brush along the left hand side of the trail. If you reach the marsh,
you've gone too far (probably).

Re: [mou-net] Chats at Hyland Lake Park Reserve

2009-05-24 Thread linda whyte
Hi, Bob,
Can you be more specific about the location? I've hiked the Reserve,
but would need some orientation as to where the site is in relation to
the Richardson Nature Center, or the beach or the south picnic area.
I'd like to try for it this afternoon (Sunday).
Thanks,
Linda Whyte

[mou-net] Northern Mockingbird at Park Pt. Rec.

Shawn Zierman and I were birding and doing some photography at Park Point
recreational area. Shawn spotted a Northern Mockingbird on one of the trees in
front of the volleyball courts. This Northern Mockingbird is most likely the
same individual that Peder Svingen found last Thursday.

Other sightings:

Canada Warbler at Indian Pt. Campground.

[mou-net] Minneapolis Mourning, Connecticut

2009-05-24 Thread Stephen Greenfield
Sunday morning I saw a Mourning Warbler at Cedar Lake and a CT Warbler at
Roberts Sanctuary. Migration seems to definitely tapering off, with e.g.
the only Magnolia Warblers being females. What a lot of Cedar Waxwings this
Spring!

* on the trails running south from the East Cedar Lake Beach entrance/sign
where 21st ends at Upton. It was singing fairly regularly at 8:30.

** 100 yards west of where the boardwalk meets the main trail. It was
singing intermittently at about 10am and (surprise!) very secretive.

[mou-net] Willet and Cattle Egrets, Nicollet County

2009-05-24 Thread Bob Dunlap
Late this morning Bob Ekblad, Diane Anderson, and I watched a Willet
fly into the shorebird spot one mile north of the town of Nicollet on
the east side of Hwy. 111. The bird cooperatively foraged in front of
us, allowing me to take a few photos. I've been waiting for this
species to show up in Nicollet County since mid-April; I'd pretty much
given up hope that one would appear here this year.

Early this afternoon Bob and Diane found a pair of Cattle Egrets on
the south side of Swan Lake at the public water access. This is the
first access point going west on Hwy. 14 after the turn for the
Nicollet Conservation Club. The egrets were foraging in the prairie
just as you turn onto the dirt road and were visible from the highway
when I arrived.

[mou-net] Lazuli Buntings

2009-05-24 Thread Jeanie Joppru
I just spoke with Alma Ronningen and the birds visited sporadically
yesterday, never staying long and haven't been seen since this morning
before nine. However, she says that the feeder that they are coming to is
right outside the dining room window, and quite visible from the road or
from their short paved driveway. She is OK with folks coming if they stay on
the pavement or CR. Please do not block the driveway. She promised to let me
know if they are seen again.
Directions: She lived on CR 41 south of MN 108. It's about 3.9 miles south
from 108.

[mou-net] Kentucky Warbler-Wms Nature Park-Blue Earth County

2009-05-24 Thread John P. Ellis
Went to a demo bird banding session at Minneopa S.P. Group Campground
on Saturday. Dr. Merrill Frydendall, the bander, told me he had heard the
Kentucky Warbler last week, so I went with my sons, Alexander and Jesse
Ellis this morning and found him singing his heart out while foraging just
over the path a little further back in the woods from where he was two years
ago when I last went looking. Take the path towards the classroom building
but go right on the south loop of the ? trail. He was about 30 yards past an
area that had been cleared of buckthorn. (Is this the 7th year???) We
also heard/saw 8-10 E. Towhees at Minneopa, heard several Blackpolls, heard
and saw a Blackburnian, several Nashvilles and Tennessees, Ovenbirds, and
also had Yellows and Yellowthroats. Heard a BBCuckoo near the Group Camp.
Did NOT locate any Bell's Vireos but we kind of ran out of time. My mother's
90th was lots of fun!

[mou-net] Hyland Park Reserve chats, Bloomington

2009-05-24 Thread linda whyte
The yellow-breasted chat was re-found at Hyland Park Reserve at 5:15
this afternoon, at a trail intersection north of the visitors (not
nature) center. Though initially approached from the southwest, this
site is more easily accessed from the driveway that leads to the
overflow (Edgewood?) parking lot. Following this driveway will take
you past a lot and a small, brown, electrical outbuilding. The path
will lead up a hill to a dog trail. At the fork, turn left, and you'll
pass a small pond in the woods on your right. The path leads directly
to the intersection in question. The chat was quiet, but eventually
showed up. It flew from one small tree to another, dropping in the
low, dense shrubs at intervals. It spent most of its time patrolling
around this intersection.
