[mou-net] Black-throated Blue Warblers
These warblers are quite frequently heard (and seen) in the appropriate habitat: well described in Kim Eckert's book. Over the weekend, had 2 singing in Tettegouche Park (Friday, May 22), from the back off Lax Lake Road, Lake County. Also, 3 on Oberg Mountain, Cook County (Saturday, May 23). Although Tettegouche is the closest, most reliable site as you drive from Duluth, be aware of the extensive damage to the forests from a severe ice-storm (in April) that mostly was felt in Lake County. Many people have worked really hard to clear the hiking and park trails, but there can be long stretches that feel like working your way through limb-sized pick-up sticks. Other than the walk in (an access road for park personnel), no trails from the back of Tettegouche were cleared. People hiking through Tettegouche said the main trail is about half clear. I will be returning again to Tettegouche, and will report when the trails are cleared. With all the effort needed, I do not anticipate that happening soon. Oberg was completely clear of obstruction. [mou-net] Cass County Birds
Spent the day yesterday birding Cass with Molly Malecek, Larry Olson, and Dale Yerger. Many Tennessee and Blackpoll Warblers still moving through the area, along with smaller numbers of other migrant songbirds. Of note were 5 American Avocets at the Cass Lake Sewer Ponds (also seen earlier in the day by Jeff Stephenson). Connecticut Warbler and Yellow-bellied Flycatcher were present in the bog along County 35. White-fronted Geese on Lake Byllesby. They were with Canada Geese and Mallards at the far northwest end of the lake. There is a Dakota Cty Park entrance about a 1/4 mile east of the Hwy 56/88 intersection, accessed from a pull-off on the south side of 88. It's possible to park a few cars on the pull-off, but park on the shoulder of 88 if it's too wet. Walk the trail on the other side of the gate to an open area, bearing down a hill to your right to find an opening to the lake. You can also go through a wooded area to your left to get to the edge of the lake. I scoped from the beach, and found the geese in the farthest northwest corner. I also saw 3 Green-winged Teal close to shore at this location. There is a little open water close to the beach off Lakeside Cemetery, east of this spot, but most of the waterfowl were at the west end this morning. [mou-net] Purgatory Creek, Eden Prairie
I stopped by Purgatory Creek, Eden Prairie (Hennepin Co.) yesterday (Tuesday) after work. This is the pond south of Highway 212 at Prairie Center Drive and Technology Drive behind the Flagship office building and Flagship Athletic Club. I counted 430 Caspian Terns, down slightly from last week and 12 small terns, mostly Fosters, but with at least one Common Tern. Also seen were a Dunlin, a Ruddy Turnstone, several Spotted Sandpipers, and a couple of Least or Semi-Palmated Sandpipers. [mou-net] Sometimes one forgets....
Just returned from seeing family friends in Madison, WI (second son sworn in as county deputy) - easy to forget that sometimes the best post-migration bird in a suburban yard might be a cardinal. Returned today, only had time for a short late lunch walk at Pioneer Park here in Princeton. However, a singing Wood Thrush, calling Yellow-billed Cuckoo and flyaway Barred Owl only serve to remind me how blessed I am to live in central Minnesota. Easy to forget until one leaves. Al Schirmacher Princeton, MN Mille Lacs Sherburne Counties PS For any Wisconsin readers, this was not intended as a slam against Madison! Still have more county birds in that area than I do in Sherburne or Mille Lacs. [mou-net] GPS for breeding birds on mou-net
The seasonal report form has been updated to make it easier to enter a GPS location for bird sightings. Location can be set as a block number (T120R25b), latitude and longitude in decimal degrees (45.18845,-93.78422), degrees minutes (45 11.307,-93 47.053), degrees minutes seconds (45 11 18.42,-93 47 3.18), or common form (N45 11.307 W93 47.053). Note the comma between the latitude and longitude. Click on Location to show a map of the location. You can move the pointer to display the exact location of the nest. I have found that if you make a waypoint on a Garmin GPS, you can brimg up the properties of the waypoint and get the latitude/longitude in the form (N45 11.307 W93 47.053). This can be cut-and-pasted into the seasonal report form. Click on location, close the map, indicate breeding status, set the date, and double click on the species. This is a simple way to enter seasonal report birds. --- David Cahlander da...@cahlander.com Burnsville, MN 952-894-5910 Join or Leave mou-net:http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives:http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
[mou-net] Aitkin County specialties!
On Tuesday May 26th Susan Schumacher and I enjoyed observing a Great Gray Owl along Aitkin CR 18. From its intersection with CR 5 we went west on CR 18, 2.2 miles and the GGOW flew into a tree on the north side relatively close to the road. We shut off our engine and watched it hunt from 6:15pm until 6:25 and then it flew deeper into the woods. It sure is a whole lot warmer to have your windows down in May than January to enjoy this species! Early on Wednesday morning May 27th from 1:00am - 2:30am we were at the McGregor Marsh listening for Yellow Rail and Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrow and it was chilly with a moderate breeze. We heard the distinctive tic-tic tictictic of 6 Yellow Rails, and the vocalization of 1 Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrow while we were there all on the east side of the highway. McGregor Marsh is south of State Hwy 210 on State Hwy 65 and we started to hear them vocalize approximately 1 mile south of State Hwy 210 on State Highway 65. They were spread out between there and the Soo Line Trail.
