[mou-net] Eurasian Tree Sparrow, south of Rochester

2010-05-01 Thread Andrew Beerman
Yesterday, while visiting a family at their farm, I observed the birds that
were
coming to their feeders and saw a Harris' sparrow, White-throated sparrow,
White-crowned sparrow, and at least two male Eurasian Tree Sparrows, with
the clearly brown cap rather than gray and the distinctive dark cheek patch.
They were eating from the ground right under the feeders. Directions:
Go west on Hwy 30 from Stewartville to Oslo. Turn south and go 7 miles. Farm
is on right side of the road number 29611.

[mou-net] yellow-rumps, w.t. sparrows, evening grosbeaks

2010-05-01 Thread Sandy Roggenkamp
First Yellow-rumped Warblers I've seen this year were flitting around the
yard and in the surrounding woods this morning. Yesterday morning, it was
White-throated Sparrows. There had been a few WTSP showing up in the yard
beginning week before last, but yesterday they seemed to be everywhere. We
still have a few Evening Grosbeaks coming to the feeders sporadically.

[mou-net] Carver County

2010-05-01 Thread John Cyrus
Windy conditions proved difficult at Carver Park today, but I did find
1 each of Tennessee, Palm Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, 2 Yellow
Warbler, and only 5 Yellow-rumped Warbler(very low compared to past
years at this time). There were more House Wren and Blue-gray
Gnatcatcher at the park and a few Clay-colored Sparrow had returned to
territory.

Some have requested more information about the sparrows. They appeared at
around 2:30 yesterday, and I think it was the first day they've been seen. For
now the family is okay with people parking in the first part of their driveway,
and so far today, the Eurasian Tree Sparrows have not been seen.

[mou-net] Hooded Warbler?

2010-05-01 Thread Lee Pratsch
Good afternoon, again,

I saw what I think is a hooded warbler on Stuart Ave. in St. Paul, between
Lincoln and Homer at about 10:30a.

Peterson does not have it in Minnesota, but my edition is 30 years old and
the map states that it comes casually in April after storms. Similar species
have even less likely.

Re: [mou-net] Hooded Warbler?

2010-05-01 Thread Julian Sellers
It's rare but possible. There is a sizable breeding population of Hooded
Warblers in Murphy-Hanrehan Regional Park (Three Rivers Park District).
(Bruce Fall is the expert on that.) In recent years, the species has been
reported from various locations in MN, including Battle Creek Park and
Crosby Farm Park in St. Paul. If your location was on Stewart Ave between
Rankin St and Homer St, that's just a block north of Shepard Road and Crosby
Farm Park. I have seen Hooded Warblers in the bluff woods below Shepard
Road on 5/24/03 and 5/19/09. In Birds in Minnesota, Bob Janssen lists April
22 and April 30 as the earliest spring dates for Hooded Warblers in
Minnesota.

[mou-net] Rice County shorebirds

2010-05-01 Thread Dave Bartkey
Hi everyone,
Kathy Thom and I stopped at the Dennison Sewage Ponds today (about 11:30 am),
on our way to check out Lake Byllesby. At the ponds we found 18 Willets, 11
Long-billed Dowitchers and 2 Wilson's Phalaropes among the Spotted and Pectoral
Sandpipers and Lesser Yellowlegs. This was abnormally busy for these ponds (
to which I'm very thankful!)

Other new birds in the county were Rose-breasted Grosbeak and Clay-colored
Sparrow.

At Byllesby, I had time to see many Willets and a single Marbled Godwit
before a Peregrine Falcon came barreling in and scared everything off. I don't
know if the shorebirds returned elsewhere on the lake or what, but the wind was
so strong that we just left.

Good birding!

[mou-net] White-faced Ibis(es?), Nicollet County

2010-05-01 Thread Bob Dunlap
Around 4:00 this afternoon Chad Gustafson and I flushed two ibises
along with a very large flock of ducks from the back pond at the WMA 1
mile north of the town of Nicollet on the east side of Hwy. 111. These
birds were only seen in flight, and it was only after looking at a
couple photos I was able to capture of the birds that I was able to
make an identification. One of the birds was clearly an adult
breeding-plumaged White-faced Ibis, i.e. it had obvious white
feathering surrounding the eye in addition to a red eye and pinkish
facial skin. The second bird was unidentifiable in the photo. I have
uploaded a photo of the two birds (cropped extensively) to the
Recently Seen page. The bird in the upper right of the photo is the
White-faced, and the trailing bird in the lower left is the
unidentified individual. While many of the ducks came back to land in
the pond during the next hour, the ibises did not and we were unable
to relocate them in searching the area.

Also of note today were a Marbled Godwit along with a smattering of
other shorebirds at Cobb River WPA in southern Blue Earth County and a
very early (singing) Warbling Vireo near Ottawa Township in Le Sueur
County.

[mou-net] Godwits at Lake Byllesby

2010-05-01 Thread drewbec
Yesterday, in the company of Susan Schumacher, Conny Brunell, Tom Tustison and
Jim Otto, we were studying a group of 3 godwits at Lake Byllesby. Two were
obviously Hudsonians, and were in nice alternate plumage. Easy ID. The third
bird seemed larger, and was an overall light buffy and brown in color. We were
all certain it was a Marbled. That is until I noticed it shuffle its wings and
exposing its white rump and black tipped tail.

I didn't see the bird today, but I would like to raise the suggestion that this
bird may have remained overnight from the previous day. If the the bird wasn't
seen in flight today, or preening, there is a possibility it could have been
misidentified. Perhaps only a godwit species???

Re: [mou-net] Godwits at Lake Byllesby

2010-05-01 Thread Jason Caddy
I did hear mention this morning that one of the godwits seen yesterday caused a
bit of confusion.

The godwit that I saw this morning was definitely a Marbled Godwit (to my
dismay). After having troubling views early in the morning I was later able to
see the bird in flight multiple times. The wings were mostly uniform underneath
with no black and I didn't see a white patch on the rump. When I saw the bird
at closer range the coloration matched that of the Sibley guide for the
Marbled. It did not seem to have very much barring on its belly, it was mostly
plain buffy like a juvenile bird or a bird in non-breeding plumage. The pattern
on the back matched guides perfectly for Marbled Godwit.

One of the Hudsonians could well have stayed the night but the bird I saw this
morning I have no doubt was a Marbled Godwit.

Thank you very much for the post because there is always a chance of mistaking
two species that are closely related.

If someone did see a Hudsonian Godwit today please post the sighting because I
would love to try again for this fantastic species.

[mou-net] Mower County Cattle Egret, E. Tree Sparrows not seen

2010-05-01 Thread Linda Sparling
I found a single Cattle Egret just east of Grand Meadow in Mower County today,
May 1. The bird was seen from Hwy 16 just .2 mile east of 750th St. There's a
sign on the north side of the road for the Grand Meadow Gun Club. The egret
was low in the trees on the far bank of the river. It flew towards town a bit
to the grassy field surrounding the area. It was feeding near the river when I
left. The time of day was late afternoon, 4:30ish.

I arrived at the farm that hosted the Eurasian Tree Sparrows yesterday.
According to the home owner, observers had been fairly continually watching the
area, with no sighting of the pair. I was there for an hour from about
2:30-3:30. No tree sparrows, but the Harris's, White-crowned and
White-throated Sparrows were still around.

Also of note:
1 Wilson's Phalarope in the Rose Creek sewage ponds
Spotted Sandpipers in two sewage lagoons - Rose Creek and Dexter
1 Yellow-rumped Warbler was my only warbler for the day
