Re: [mou-net] [mnbird] Birding about the metro
Hi Liz, these are excellent photos of a spectacular hawk. The warm brown coloration, rufous dorsal color of the tail, and rufous upper chest rule out a Harlan Hawk. Note the long wings, which are typical of a western red-tail, and not of our eastern sub-species. The tail coloration is intriguing. The deep rufous dorsal tail coloration suggests that this is an adult, but the white ventral tail coloration? I am not familiar with this. Is this a rufous morph? The one bird I have been noticing is our highway sentinels: the Red-tailed Hawks. Several of our winter hawks are much darker than expected. One bird at Highway 100 and 77th in Edina, I had to double back for a second look. I thought I had found a Rough-legged, but it was a dark morph Red-tail. [mou-net] St. Paul peregrine falcon
While walking across University Avenue in St. Paul early Friday morning, I saw a peregrine falcon descending toward the Walmart parking lot at incredible speed, passing directly over my head before landing in a tree north of the old Midway Chevrolet dealership. What caught my eye was its very light underbody plumage - almost uniformly white, with a narrow dark "slash" visible in the secondary feathers close to the body. I haven't been able to find an illustration or photo that shows a peregrine with such light plumage, but is that unusual? I don't see peregrines often enough to have a good sense of the variability in their plumage. In any event, this was definitely my best "Walmart parking lot" bird, ever. [mou-net] Fwd: Towhee post
From: jeff schultz Date: January 2, 2011 2:40:02 PM CST Subject: Towhee post The male Eastern Towhee that has been at my feeders in Ottertail since November has made it to the new year. Unfortunately our CBC was cancelled so he won't get counted. It was good to see him appear this morning regardless. It seems that he spends the night under the deck. At first he associated with a long departed Fox Sparrow, but now is part the usual crowd at the feeders. Over the last week it has been interesting to note a change in feeding habits. Instead of only eating millet from the ground, the towhee has taken to sunflower seeds out of the feeder and rather aggressively defends his space. All in all it has been a good opportunity to watch a most beautiful bird at the wrong time of the year. [mou-net] Longspur mea culpa
I apologize for inadequacies regarding my previous post. The longspurs were seen at the MSP international airport. They were at the north end of the airport where 28th ave S ends in a T foraging along the roadside to the west of the T. They were seen early in the morning of the 1st. Apparently they are somewhat unusual in Hennepin County. I was unaware of this. In any event, I am sorry for the lack of specifics in the original post and will endeavor not to make the same mistake in the future. I hope that they can be relocated by those interested in seeing them. Kurt Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
