Re: [mou-net] http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/MNOU.html#1300068133
You have completely failed to understand what the point for our message was. By telling others that the local feeder had not seen the bird it was fairly clear that the bird was moving through the area and not staying to feed for awhile. The last record, in 2004, for this species was a bird that spent a few days at a feeder. As the species is known for visiting feeders in its home terratories it would be logical to want to know if it was visiting a feeder in this area. You appear to not understand what the purpose of MOUnet is. One of the purposes of this listserve is to pass along information to the members of the MOU about recent sightings of various species. The only accusations you seem to be seeing are in your own mind and no one elses. We were very thankful that a local feeder that didn't know any of us welcomed a birder (not us) into their home to discuss the local sightings. Thanks should be for them for their being so helpful. Not this kind of bull from you. They seem well enough versed in identification that the birder who talked to them feels they would take a very good look at anything other than their regulars. so a bird is not seen and accusations start? how does this help? m.a. _ Summer Jobs, Winter Jobs Careers in Great Places at http://www.coolworks.com/ Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] Live From Freeborn County
The song sparrow sings in my yard and life seems better. Flocks of grackles, red-winged blackbirds, robins, Canada geese, juncos, and American tree sparrows feather my day. Only one tree sparrow made my yard its winter home this year. I am pleased that others of the species have stopped by to let me have a look. Let the lovely music of the morning chorus begin! Hi All-- Yesterday Gene Bauer and I encountered several Lapland Longspurs in a flock that also contained a half-dozen Horned Larks and a single Snow Bunting. I was able to take a photo of the longspur, curiously the first ever for me of this abundant species. I have posted the photo on my blog, http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com along with comments on field marks and the taxonomy of Lapland Longspurs. dan -- Dan or Erika Tallman Northfield, Minnesota http://sites.google.com/site/tallmanorum http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com http://picasaweb.google.com/danerika daner...@gmail.com the best shod travel with wet feet Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes --Thoreau Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
[mou-net] Trumpeter Swans - Houston County
This afternoon I was treated to the sights and sounds of 11 Trumpeter Swans that were feeding on my neighbor's sod field adjacent to the Root River approximately 5 miles west of Hwy 16 on County 21 in Mound Prairie Township. Two of the birds are banded...yellow collar. I might be able to pick out the numbers on their bands with the photographs that I took, but they were pretty far out in the field and heat diffraction was a problem. I believe yellow collars mean that at least two of them are originally from WI. Very cool to see! [mou-net] White-Fronted, Snow Geese at Lake Byllesby, Dakota and Goodhue Cty
Hundreds of WF, Canada and Snow Geese, plus a good mix of duck species were present around noon today on Lake Byllesby in Dakota Cty. There were two viewing areas: at Lakeside Cemetery, and also from the Goodhue County Public Access Boat Landing. Thanks for your post, Steve Weston. Bruce Fall was at Lakeside Cemetery when I arrived, and had located all the duck and goose species present, including Cackling Goose. I found most of them after checking the Dakota and Goodhue locations. Lakeside Cemetery: Drive a little over 1/2 mi east of Randolph on hwy 88; entrance is on the south side of the road, and a viewing area is to your left (east) as you enter. Public Access to L. Byllesby, Goodhue Cty Boat Landing: From the hwy 56/88 intersection, go south, over the bridge on 56, about 2 miles; turn left (east) on Scotia Trail (302nd St.) and follow the signs. The entrance is down a hill, on your left. The waterfowl was along the far beach, looking NE. At this time, slushy snow, ice, soft gravel and mud make driving, parking and walking in both areas dicey. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888. Spring finally seems to be on the way, judging by the warm temperatures, and the variety of bird species being reported. BALD EAGLES are at the nests throughout most of the area, as are the GREAT HORNED OWLS. Larry Wilebski reported on March 13 that there is another VARIED THRUSH in the Lancaster area. It is being seen at a property outside of the town, and if anyone is interested in seeing the bird , please contact Larry for directions. His email address is lar...@wiktel.com. Diana Morkassel, near Warren in Marshall County , on March 10 saw 2 BALD EAGLES , some HORNED LARKS. BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen near the Good Samaritan Center in Warren. Brad and Dee Ehlers reported 50 TRUMPETER SWANS, and a variety of ducks including NORTHERN PINTAIL, RING-NECKED DUCK, GADWALL, COMMON MERGANSER, and HOODED MERGANSER. AMERICAN COOT ,and AMERICAN KESTREL were seen, as well as BALD EAGLES on the nest. Teresa Jaskiewicz at the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center reported AMERICAN KESTREL, HORNED LARK, NORTHERN SHRIKE, and RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS.
