[mou-net] New non-raptor migrants, plus many new non-raptors up north!

2011-04-10 Thread Erik Bruhnke
I counted raptors this past Thursday and Friday here in Duluth, and had some
good flights of raptors coming through. In addition to the many raptors
tallied (899 on Thursday and 605 on Friday), there have been several new
arrivals over the past few days. Below are my two biggest days of hawk
counting so far. The first of two days I had 333 raptors come by in the one
hour peak of migration for the day. It was crazy!! Also, two Tree Swallows
and 24 Tundra Swans were observed. On Friday, two new-to-the-area sightings
include two COMMON LOONS and a single NORTHERN FLICKER... the
new-to-the-area raptor sighting on Friday included an OSPREY!

While driving from Ashland back to Duluth yesterday morning, I saw 2 BELTED

very good for raptor movements, as well as potentially some new passerine
movements as well.

[mou-net] Lake Como - St. Paul

2011-04-10 Thread Scott Loss
The ice has completely disappeared from Lake Como in the last 24 hours, and
waterbirds have been plentiful this morning, including at least 10 Common
Loons, Pied-billed Grebe, cormorants, and 10 duck species (Mallard, Wood Duck,
Shoveler, Red-breasted Mergansers, Ruddy Ducks, Lesser Scaup, Ring-necked Duck,
Bufflehead, and also Blue-winged Teal in golf course pond aross from lake).
With the strong south winds there were birds leaving and arriving on an off
through the morning, so not all duck species were present at once. The loons
seem to be staying put, as is the decent-sized raft of ruddies, scaup,
ring-necks and buffleheads.

Interesting non-water birds included my first-of-year Tree Swallows,
Rough-winged Swallows, and Swamp Sparrows.

Here is a link to a short video showing a Canada Goose attacking and chasing
a pair of Sandhill Cranes. I observed this interaction on April 5th in Rice

and Panama Ave (where 19 turns south toward Lonsdale). I thought it was
amusing and that others might enjoy seeing it.

[mou-net] Birding N Hennepin County

More exciting was spotting a pair of Sandhill Cranes walking through the
wetland ne of the intersection of 144/13, (in between those ponds e. of the

Also Brewer's blackbirds in the Blackbird flock on the farm property. Elm Creek

Hi,

Linda Sparling just called to report that Kim Eckert had just found a male
Mountain Bluebird on Stevens County Highway 1, 0.2 mile south of State Highway
28. It was at the south end of a small grove of trees, and was associating
with a female Eastern Bluebird. Also observed by Linda, Paul Egeland, and
Herb Dingmann.

Re: [mou-net] Lake Como - St. Paul

2011-04-10 Thread Rosie Bunge
We were at Como Lake between 1:00 and 2:00.  In addition to those,  we saw a
waterfowl that we had trouble identifying.  It was in the center of the lake
and we saw only one.  It was grebe-like, with a longer  neck than a pied-billed
so we think it was differnet than what Scott reported.  The bill was definitely
like the grebes.  It seemed to have white on the front on the neck and a slight
redness to the head.  If others see it, we would appreciate your opinions.
Thanks, Rosie Bunge

[mou-net] West-central Minnesota waterfowl

2011-04-10 Thread Bob Dunlap
A group of birders consisting of John and Chris Hockema, Dedrick Benz,
Dave Bartkey, Ben Fritchman, Shawn Conrad, Alex Watson, and myself
held its third annual Wang Chung Waterfowl Weekend this weekend in
west-central Minnesota, with a focus on the four counties of the
windowpane (Douglas, Grant, Stevens, and Pope). Other counties
birded included Traverse, Swift, Wilkin, Clay, Becker, and Otter Tail.

In addition to the already posted Brant and Cinnamon Teal found
yesterday, the group had several highlights from Friday afternoon
through today (Sunday). Perhaps most notable were waterfowl and goose
numbers: on Friday (4/8), large flocks (with one numbering near 5,000
birds) of Snow, Greater White-fronted, and Ross's Geese as well as
Tundra Swans were observed along the Hwy. 75 corridor from northern
Traverse County to southern Wilkin County. The majority of fields
adjacent to the highway in this area are currently flooded and
probably will remain so for at least a few days yet, attracting very
large numbers of waterfowl and most of the state's regular species
(excluding Mute Swan and sea ducks). Good numbers of geese were seen
in western Grant County and northwestern Stevens County yesterday
(4/9) as well; the best location was south and west of the town of
Herman in Grant County (where we found the Brant). Just about any
flooded field in the windowpane counties held several species of duck
yesterday, while most ponds and lakes remained mostly frozen and
therefore unattractive to large numbers of waterfowl.

Here are some other highlights from our weekend:

- 6 species of geese on Saturday (Canada, Cackling, Greater
White-fronted, Snow, Ross's, and Brant)
- single flyover Red Crossbill and Bohemian Waxwing at the group
campground at Lake Carlos State Park north of Alexandria in Douglas
County (Saturday morning)
- early American Golden-Plover in a flooded field in southwestern
Otter Tail County (Friday afternoon)
- early pair of Swainson's Hawks along CR 20 in northwestern Stevens
County (Saturday afternoon)
- flock of around 25 Bohemian Waxwings feeding on crabapples in the
town of Deer Creek in eastern Otter Tail County (Sunday afternoon)
- breeding-plumaged Snow Buntings and Lapland Longspurs in several
locations throughout the weekend

[mou-net] Cattle Egret in Grant Co; Tundra Swans in Traverse Co

2011-04-10 Thread Kim R Eckert
In addition to yesterday's very early Am Avocet and Marbled Godwits in
Lac Qui Parle and Big Stone Co's and today's Mountain Bluebird in
Stevens Co (already reported on MOU-net), the Minn Birding Weekends
group had 2 other sightings of note today, April 10.

- An early Cattle Egret near Herman along the W side of Grant CR 7,
1.2 mi S of Hwy 27. (This was near the site of yesterday's Brant
sighting; neither the Brant nor yesterday's Cinnamon Teal NE of Herman
could be relocated today.)

- A minimum of 3,400 Tundra Swans counted/estimated in a single
flooded field just N of Wheaton along Hwy 75; another 1,000+ were also
seen by our group ~5 mi NE of here along Traverse CR 14, for a total
of ~4,500 individuals.
