[mou-net] birding about the Metro

2012-05-03 Thread Steve Weston
As I walked out the door this morning, I was greeted by a singing Tennessee
Warbler. Second best bird of the day was a pair of Sand Hill Cranes on the
lawn of the Hospital in Princeton. I was all set to check out the sewerage
ponds there, when work call me back as fast as possible to the cities.

This weekend I have to run my second frog and toad survey as the tree frogs
are loudly proclaiming their lust from what seems like every wetland
around. this run will be about two weeks early.

I have received a report that the deer ticks are thick. I have not found
any yet.

[mou-net] birding event in northern Minnesota

2012-05-03 Thread Jennifer Bateman
Fellow birders,
For those of you who may be interested, we are hosting a Spring Migration
Birding Event at our resort May 11 12. This is an opportunity to see some
birds in the northern part of our state during the spring migration. Please
visit this link to learn all the details
http://www.twoinlets.com/rates/migrationBirdPackage.html

We are located in Becker County, a short driving distance from Itasca State
Park and Tamarac Wildlife Refuge, and of course are located on a lake (Two
Inlets Lake) and adjoin Two Inlets State Forest. This will be an opportunity to
bird with a small group in a relaxed atmosphere.

You can expect to view many warbler species such as Chestnut-sided,
Blackburnian and Redstarts. A brief look at a Goshawk is also possible along
with nesting loons and eagles.

All of our cabins have a screen porch, every dock has a bench, and we also have
canoes to help get you out on the water to view shore birds.

You must reserve your spot by Monday, May 7th. Grab a friend! We'd love to have
you join us!

Thanks,

Jennifer at Two Inlets Resort

[mou-net] Warblers and Vireos -- it's a Wave!

2012-05-03 Thread Holly Peirson
I am tied to my desk and other indoors activities today but my windows are
open just a little bit so as to keep rain out.

In the last hour, I have heard calls from MANY birds of these species, and
can see them flitting about in the underbrush and canopy. It's a WAVE at my
house!

* Yellow-rumped Warbler (first heard Weds - several)

* Black and White Warbler (first heard Weds - 1 individual)

* Tennessee Warbler (wow are they loud when they get up close! Like
the spring peepers...)

* Nashville Warbler

* Blue-headed Vireo

* White-throated Sparrows (been here for weeks, but still fun to
hear them)

* Song and Swamp Sparrows (also been here for a while)

I also saw/heard the B. Oriole yesterday, so have to rush out when time to
do errands and get some grape jelly... I tried the Strawberry we made last
year but they just don't like it as well...!

The Red-shouldered Hawk has built a new nest, almost visible from the porch,
this year. They are kee-eeer-ing overhead quite frequently.

Found FOY Black and White, Orange Crowned and Common Yellowthroat Warblers
today. Also a probable Golden-Winged. Plus a couple LBJs I didn't recognize
and am in no postion to try to name. I also keep hearing a call that sounds
like a croaky, maybe slightly defective old fashioned steam whistle. It is two
sequential toots in roughly 1 1/2 seconds. It's quite loud and often startles
the heck out of me. I've no idea what it is. Brian

A little rain and some warmer humid weather has turned the northwest a
vivid green and leaves are coming out all over. You need to be quick if
you are to see the warblers before the trees are fully leafed out.
Migration has been spotty in the last week, but new species continue to
turn up every day.

Steve Midthune reported SWAINSON'S THRUSH and OVENBIRD at Tamarac NWR in
Becker County on May 2.

Heidi Hughes in Polk County found LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE at the intersection
of CR 68 and 23 on April 28. Other species seen in the area included
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, SWAINSON'S HAWK, COOPER'S HAWK, MARBLED GODWIT,
HERMIT THRUSH, and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER. Leon and Donna Thoreson saw a
EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE in Climax on April 29. Other species they saw
included WOOD DUCK, GREAT EGRET, BELTED KINGFISHER, and PALM WARBLER. On

HARRIS'S SPARROWS, 5 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, and 12 WHITE-THROATED
SPARROWS in her East Grand Forks yard. On May 1, there was a
CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, and on May 2, a YELLOW WARBLER. On May 3, Leon and
Donna Thoreson saw an EASTERN TOWHEE in their yard near Climax.

Tonight in our yard in Pennington County, I saw a SWAINSON'S THRUSH,
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, and ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER.

At Agassiz NWR in Marshall County , Gregg Knutsen saw a MARSH WREN on
April 23, Maggie Anderson found a VIRGINIA RAIL there on April 23, Lynda
Knutsen reported a YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD at headquarters on April 25,
and HARRIS'S SPARROWS arrived on May 1. Casey Skaggs found four AMERICAN
AVOCETS on Tamarac Pool on May 2. Cliff Steinhauer found three
SHARP-TAILED GROUSE leks in Marshall County on May 2 - two were in Excel
township. One of those was a half mile east from 150th Ave on 250th St.
There was another in East Valley Township. He also found a GREATER
PRAIRIE-CHICKEN lek with 4 birds. He also reported 4 TURKEY VULTURES
feasting on carrion in the Thief River. A CANADA GOOSE with 6 goslings
was spotted on May 2.

Paul Clay saw a TURKEY VULTURE at the south edge of Hallock in Kittson
County on April 27.

Beth Siverhus in Warroad , Roseau County, reported RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET

[mou-net] Birds in Hennepin County

2012-05-03 Thread Ben Harste
Today I didn't get to have binoculars but woke up to a FOY House Wren in
the backyard being chased away by a Bluebird.

I went for a brief walk at Purgatory Creek in Eden Prairie and saw a Palm
Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler The highlight and biggest surprise of all
was hearing a Sedge Wren singing near the boardwalk that leads to the
blind. At first I thought I was mis-hearing it and that it was a Marsh
Wren since most of that area is marshy but it was definitely a Sedge Wren
which is a first in Hennepin County for me!
