[mou-net] birding about the Metro
As I walked out the door this morning, I was greeted by a singing Tennessee Warbler. Second best bird of the day was a pair of Sand Hill Cranes on the lawn of the Hospital in Princeton. I was all set to check out the sewerage ponds there, when work call me back as fast as possible to the cities. This weekend I have to run my second frog and toad survey as the tree frogs are loudly proclaiming their lust from what seems like every wetland around. this run will be about two weeks early. I have received a report that the deer ticks are thick. I have not found any yet. -- Steve Weston on Quigley Lake in Eagan, MN swest...@comcast.net Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] Warblers and Vireos -- it's a Wave!
I am tied to my desk and other indoors activities today but my windows are open just a little bit so as to keep rain out. In the last hour, I have heard calls from MANY birds of these species, and can see them flitting about in the underbrush and canopy. It's a WAVE at my house! * Yellow-rumped Warbler (first heard Weds - several) * Black and White Warbler (first heard Weds - 1 individual) * Tennessee Warbler (wow are they loud when they get up close! Like the spring peepers...) * Nashville Warbler * Blue-headed Vireo * White-throated Sparrows (been here for weeks, but still fun to hear them) * Song and Swamp Sparrows (also been here for a while) I also saw/heard the B. Oriole yesterday, so have to rush out when time to do errands and get some grape jelly... I tried the Strawberry we made last year but they just don't like it as well...! The Red-shouldered Hawk has built a new nest, almost visible from the porch, this year. They are kee-eeer-ing overhead quite frequently. Holly Peirson Columbus, SE Anoka Co. [mou-net] Warblers, Sparrows and Swallows Oh My!
Found FOY Black and White, Orange Crowned and Common Yellowthroat Warblers today. Also a probable Golden-Winged. Plus a couple LBJs I didn't recognize and am in no postion to try to name. I also keep hearing a call that sounds like a croaky, maybe slightly defective old fashioned steam whistle. It is two sequential toots in roughly 1 1/2 seconds. It's quite loud and often startles the heck out of me. I've no idea what it is. Today I didn't get to have binoculars but woke up to a FOY House Wren in the backyard being chased away by a Bluebird.
