[mou-net] Decorah IA BAEA nest cam + 14

2012-05-09 Thread G Andersson
Ornithophiles

I may have missed an MOU email about this this year, but the Decorah bald
eagles have two nestlings that are already about 5 weeks old. I have not
been watching them this year, but here is the link. In addn, you will see
about 14 links to other raptor nest cameras on the left side-including PEREs
in MN.

Right now there were over 5000 people at the Decorah site watching pitch
darkness-maybe the camera is so sensitive as to record by moonlight once the
moon rises. :=>)There have been 217K visits to the site so far.

[mou-net] Possible Neotropic Cormorant at Sherburne

2012-05-09 Thread David Benson
Lars Benson just called (8:45 pm) to say that near the pool that is closest
to Stickney Pond on the Wildlife Drive at Sherburne National Wildlife
Refuge, he saw a small cormorant together with some Double-crested
Cormorants. The bird was noticeably smaller and longer-tailed.
Unfortunately, as the light faded and he had to move farther away to try to
see the face, he wasn't able to distinguish any facial markings that would
have been diagnostic. So, maybe not, but something for those of you who
frequent Sherburne to keep an eye out for.

One heard calling on 5/9/2012 at the SW corner of the most easterly pool
(Dorer Pools) at Whitewater State Wildlife Area for an apparent FOY in
state record. Yellow-headed Blackbirds and 8+ Sandhill Cranes also
present.

[mou-net] Harris Sparrows and shorebirds - Mpls

2012-05-09 Thread Claudia Egelhoff
Two Harris Sparrows seen foraging together last night along the RR tracks
east of Wirth Park in Minneapolis.

Today, more shorebirds in the ugly pond/mudhole west of the Wirth Lake
Beachhouse - Spotted, Solitary and Least Sandpipers. In the past few
weeks, yellowlegs were also foraging in this spot.

[mou-net] RFI - late May or early June best for yellow rail at McGregor marsh?

2012-05-09 Thread Rick Schroeder
Greetings -

I will soon be in Minneapolis and am going to take a run up to McGregor
marsh to try to hear (or see) yellow rail. I can go either May 21, or
sometime between June 7-12. Would one or the other of these dates be
better as far as chances of hearing the rail? Thanks for any advice.

[mou-net] Hok-si-la this Saturday

2012-05-09 Thread Steve Weston
On Saturday I will lead the annual MRVAC Warbler Weekend Bird Hike in
Hok-si-la. This traditional field trip has been held in May for more than
twenty years. The field trip is free and open to everyone. The paths
are wide and accomodating. And the birding is generally excellant. Bring
lunch and you can join us afterward as we walk down to Sand Point, if the
water is not too high. Lots of walking and good company. And, no need to
call for reservations.

We will meet at Hok-si-la at 7am. Hok-si-la is right off of Hwy 61 between
Frontenac Station and Lake City. It is well marked.
