[mou-net] Itasca County Varied Thrush

2012-12-28 Thread Shawn Conrad
After being away visiting family for the holidays, I returned to find that
the female Varied Thrush is still a regular visitor to our yard near Grand
Rapids. It arrived on 11/29, so tomorrow will mark at least 1 month that
it has been here.

I'm not sure exactly which feed it's eating, but I've been throwing a
cupful of cracked corn plus some of a commercial mix that includes dried
fruit, peanut pieces, and sunflower chips under our white cedar each
morning. Occasionally I've seen it picking at a cheap blueberry suet cake
I placed under there as well.

[mou-net] Pope County

2012-12-28 Thread Sid Stivland
Quick trip to Pope County after Christmas. The bird activity was pretty
subdued; too much Christmas celebration, perhaps.

The Common Redpolls were out in force – one larger flock on Thursday between
Lowry and Starbuck contained 75+ birds attacking seed pods along the road. Two
smaller flocks of 25 or so birds farther down the road. Several others
reported Redpolls at their feeders.

There was a pair of Bald Eagles on a carcass across the road from my farm –
maybe 75 yards out in the field.

One Barred Owl hunting near Barsness Park in Glenwood.

A flock of 30 or more American Robins on crabapple trees in Barsness Park.

Otherwise not much beyond Crows, Chickadees, and Woodpeckers.

[mou-net] Harriet Screech Owl Update

2012-12-28 Thread Brian Byrne
Ive had a lot of responses to my first email about the Lake Harriet Screech owl.

The location of this owl is known but I guess in the interest of not stressing
out the little guy it is being withheld.

Sorry to those who asked for directions.

Brian

[mou-net] Varied Thrush - Duluth

2012-12-28 Thread Tony Mitchell
Varied Thrush was spotted again today about 5 or 6 houses west of 47th and
Oakley. I believe it to be same individual spotted by Janet Riegle & Laura
Erickson on 12/15 and Don Kienholz on 12/19. I spotted it at 2:00 PM today,
12/28.

[mou-net] Red Crossbill (Hennepin Co.)

2012-12-28 Thread Alyssa DeRubeis
My boyfriend and I explored Westwood Hills Nature Center in St. Louis Park
this afternoon. We heard what we believe to be Red Crossbills. A bird or
two flew over the pine forest at 1:00pm, and then one returned around
1:20pm and started singing. It was a neat song, although I haven't found
any convincing recordings on the internet. Also at the nature center were
American Robin, Northern Shrike, and Barred Owl.

A female Common Redpoll visited our Golden Valley bird feeder yesterday.
Great Horned Owl, Pine Siskin, Cooper's Hawk, and American Robin have been
in the 'hood as well.

Good birding!

[mou-net] looking for winter birds north of Stillwater

2012-12-28 Thread Halle O'Falvey
Hi, I am looking to go out birding with a few friends on Jan 3, most do not
even own binoculars. I am a novice, myself, but I do know a few birds. We
are going to stop at someone's home at Cty Rd Hwy 15 & Hwy 4 to begin with
to see the birds at the feeders.

We will be touring in the cars.

does anyone know of birds and their hangouts up around there? William
O'Brien has the foot path along the river with a few winter birds. How is
the edge of Wilder Forest? The development of Big Marine Park Reserve? Pine
Point? Hardwood MWA or Marv Schroeder Park?

Just looking on the map for possibilities but I do not know the terrain?
