[mou-net] More white-faced Ibis - Pennington County

2013-05-04 Thread Jeanie Joppru
Last evening, Pam Joppru found 2 white-faced ibis feeding along a gravel
road just to the northwest corner of Thief River Falls. These birds were
easily visible and feeding actively when I went to check them out. Going to
try to get a photo this morning if they are still there. I will post if I
see them again.

2013-05-04 Thread Scott Mehus
In about a half hours time, from 9:00-9:30 am, I have seen over 375
Bonaparte's Gulls migrating by the National Eagle Center in Wabasha,
Wabasha County.
It is by the far the most I have seen in Minnesota in such a short time
span. they were all heading up river, so look over Lake Pepin for them.

[mou-net] Wilson's warbler

2013-05-04 Thread donn mattsson
Among other birds, Kathy and I had great close-up looks at a female
Wilson's warbler foraging on new willow shoots close to the ground near the
east entrance to Robert's bird sanctuary by Lake Harriet. We saw her
Friday morning in the same place both coming and going.

On another note, if anyone would be interested in sharing information
regarding Costa Rican bird guides (ones with two legs - not a book) and/or
reliable bird tours to Costa Rica, please reply to this address. Thanks.

[mou-net] Lazuli Bunting

2013-05-04 Thread runbic
As of 1030 hours the bunting has not put in an appearance. You are welcome to
come and look for it. If we are not home, the bunting has been in the spruce
trees (2) on the NW corner of the house, just outside the fence. It has been
feeding on ground in the space between the two trees.

[mou-net] Advice on Birding Africa

2013-05-04 Thread Jerry Wozniak
I am considering a birding trip to either Ethiopia or Kenya, so I would
appreciate if anyone could provide me with any tips, suggestions, advice, a
critique on which on to consider. And maybe what to avoid.
I do know that both have high bird lists. Kenya, however, from what I have
been able to gather, costs much more.
What birding companies do you recommend? Suggestions and recommendations. Are
there less expensive options for Kenya with still the same quality birding
experience?
Thank you very much,
Jerry Wozniak

[mou-net] belated thanks for the Lazuli Bunting sighting

2013-05-04 Thread linda whyte
Thanks goes to Jim Gay and his wife for sharing this bird with many of us
who were fortunate enough to see it Friday. My only other experience of
this species was in Theodore Roosevelt Na. Park in N. Dakota, and it was a
much more distant sightin, in the glare of mid-day. Seeing the bird at
close range, even in the rain, impressed much more, for field marks and the
qualities of its particular shade of blue. Jim's alertness and generosity
gave us a very special opportunity.

[mou-net] Ibis in Pennington County and Kittson County

2013-05-04 Thread Jeanie Joppru
The two white-faced ibis that I reported earlier were still present in the
same spot along 180 St. NE west of Thief River Falls at 3:pm. To get there,
take US 59 north through town and towards Newfolden. At 180 St. NE turn
right . The birds were about a quarter to a half mile east along that road
working the north ditch and adjacent plowed field. When in the field, they
were very difficult to see as they were nearly the same tone as the dirt.

Also, Ron Erpelding and I found the three white-faced ibis in Kittson County
between St Vincent and the Red River bridge along highway 175 working the
edge of a patch of water on the south side.

Other news: The Ontario listserve recently mentioned a Glossy Ibis near Fort
Francis that was last seen flying towards Rainy Lake that may have wandered
into Koochiching County!

Happy Ibis hunting!

[mou-net] White-faced Ibis Continue, Polk County 5/4/2013

2013-05-04 Thread Bill Blackburn
Hi all,

Not much new to report today, but several birds reported previously were
relocated in Polk County.

WHITE-FACED IBIS (7) continue at the Parnell Impoundment on Polk County
17. Found by Sandy Aubol and Paul (Budde?). They apparently have not
moved. Sandy was able to cross the ditches at 230th Ave without getting
wet.

WHITE-FACED IBIS (1) relocated at the Euclid East Impoundment (1.5 miles
East of Euclid) by myself and Paul. I am assuming that this is the same
individual I saw there a little over a week ago.

LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE (2) relocated on Polk County 68 in the section where the
road curves East prior to meeting Polk County 23. I think it's a little
early to say pair, but there have apparently been breeding Loggerheads on
this corner in the past. Both were between the same two telephone poles,
but not really associating. One was last seen diving into the grass and
the other flew to the tree line next to the silo with the green and white
striped roof.

Additionally, I did see a PEREGRINE FALCON making a pass at the ducks in
the Agassiz Valley Project on the Polk County side (3rd Peregrine in 3 days
:P).
The SNOWY EGRET was not relocated to my knowledge. There was a group of
egrets hugging (and crossing) the Polk County line in the interior of the
project this evening, but I couldn't tell if the Snowy was among them.
I'll let you know if it turns up.
Had my FOS MARBLED GODWITS and a SHARP-TAILED GROUSE in a tree at Euclid
East today as well.

Whats with all the Ibis this year?

Feel free to call me if you are out in the area tomorrow (Sunday) and want
more info on any of the birds recently reported. 404 316 8609

[mou-net] Osprey, Red Wing, Goodhue Co.

2013-05-04 Thread Phil Dech
There was an Osprey circling over Pottery Pond, adjacent to the Mississippi
River in Red Wing, this afternoon. He had the distinctive dark patches at the
wrists, W shape when cruising, and once or twice looked like he was going to
go into a feet-first dive. Interestingly, the DNR had just stocked Pottery
Pond with trout within the last couple of weeks.
