[mou-net] Sibley County shorebirds 7/5
There are still many flooded fields in Sibley County, a few of these contained some migrant shorebirds this morning. The area north of the intersection of county highways 12 and 13 has been extensively flooded by High Island Creek, much of this flooded area is probably currently too deep and grassy. However the area to the west of 447th Ave. and north of county 12 held 46 Lesser Yellowlegs this morning. There was no Cliff Swallow activity at 447th Ave. this morning, I'm guessing the large colony in this culvert was wiped out by the high water. The colony two sections east was still very active today. Elsewhere: Flooded field north of county 15, 1/4 mile east of county 9: 12 Least Sandpipers. Flooded field at county 12 (361st Ave.) - 240th St. intersection: 1 Greater Yellowlegs, 8 Lesser Yellowlegs, 15 Least Sandpipers, 1 Short-billed Dowitcher. Also, a Red-headed Woodpecker was on a fence post at the 371st Ave – 238th St. intersection. Doug Kieser Minneapolis This message contains information which may be confidential and privileged. -RBA *Minnesota *Minnesota Statewide *July 5, 2013 *MNST1307.05 -Birds mentioned Yellow Rail Black-bellied Plover Bell's Vireo Northern Mockingbird Henslow's Sparrow Nelson's Sparrow -Transcript Hotline: Minnesota Statewide Date: July 5, 2013 Sponsor: Minnesota Ornithologists' Union (MOU) http://moumn.org Reports: (763) 780-8890 Compiler: Anthony Hertzel (r...@moumn.org) This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday July 4th, 2013. A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was found on June 29th along the Gunflint Trail in Cook County just north of Greenwood Lake Road. It was in a large clearing on north side of South Broule River. On July 4th, Craig Mandel found YELLOW RAILS and NELSON'S SPARROWS at the McGregor Marsh in Aitkin County. The birds were heard along state highway 65 just south of highway 210. Randy Frederickson reported a BELL'S VIREO south of Willmar in Kandiyohi County on June 20th. From the junction of highways 23 and 71 south of Willmar, go south on highway 71 for four and a half miles. Turn west on to 105th Avenue SE, then north on 7th Street SW. Drive to the wildlife management area and look for the vireo on the east side of the road in the NW corner of the shelter belt. HENSLOW'S SPARROWS have been heard at Sherburne NWR in Sherburne County. Check east of the Blue Hill Trail trailhead on the north side of county road 9. Another has been seen near the Prairie Trail parking area on the Prairie's Edge Wildlife Drive. And one was in Benton County on the 2nd, on the north side of 155th Street NE (two miles south of the Morrison County line), about 100 yards west of 195th Avenue (the Mille Lacs County line). [mou-net] Clay County - 7/4/13 - Chestnut-collared Longspur
7/5/13 On Thursday, 7/4 between 12:30 and 1:30 pm. I birded the traditional spot for Chestnut-collared Longspurs. The area was quit active and I was able to drive the entire road, from the South end to the North end. But do note as previously mentioned there are some very soft sandy areas along the road, just North of the area where the Chestnut-collared Longspurs are. That would likely be impassable if there had been any recent rains in the area. To reach the road, from the intersection of CR 26 and MN 9. Go East on CR 26 (90th Ave. N), about 3 miles to 170th St. N. Turn left on to 170th St. N and continue along this road for the next 5 miles. The area with the Chestnut-collared Longspurs is the first 1/2 mile North of the first Cattle guard. Which is the same area where the Sprague's Pipit was observed last year. Here area a few of the birds I observed along the road. Clay county Upland Sandpiper Western Kingbird Loggerhead Shrike - Two Loggerhead Shrikes were observed at the very North end of the road, with one being observed near the parking area just West of 170th St N, along CR 8 (140 Ave. N). Horned Lark Bank Swallow - 300 + Veery Chestnut-collared Longspur - Two displaying males were observed, just North of the first Cattle guard. [mou-net] Aitkin County - Nelson's Sparrow
7/5/13 While listening to the Yellow Rails, the other night. I thought there were some distant singing Nelson's Sparrows. But with all the traffic even after midnight that night. They were difficult to confirm. So on Thursday morning, I went back out and between 8:00 and 8:20 am. There were two singing Nelson's Sparrow, about .3 miles North of the Soo Line Trail, or about a mile South of Highway 210 along Highway 65. A third bird was also observed at this location. The birds were on the West side of the road. Aitkin County Nelson's Sparrow - 7/4 - 8:00 - 8:20 am - Highway 65, 1 mile South of 210.
