Re: [mou-net] Dowitcher ID Help (Hennepin County)

2013-07-10 Thread Warren Woessner
Timing is important. Short billeds migrate earlier than Long-billeds and
non-breeding (eg molting adults) tend to migrate well before juveniles. I can't
get to your photos right now (traveling) but would guess molting adult
Short-billed from timing alone.
(I am in New England, where there is a strong migration of Short-bills right
now.)

Subject: [mou-net] Dowitcher ID Help (Hennepin County)

I went to Purgatory Creek today and there were quite a few shorebirds
present and visible from the blind.

Least Sandpiper - 50+
Killdeer - 15+
Lesser Yellowlegs - 2
Solitary Sandpiper - 2

And one Dowitcher. I suspect it is a Short-billed Dowitcher as it seemed
to have more golden looking than white looking bars on the back, it had a
unmarked orange breast, and one was reported yesterday on eBird.

I uploaded some pictures on Flickr. Any input on whether it is a
Short-billed Dowitcher or if it is possibly a Long-billed Dowitcher would
be welcome.

[mou-net] Blue Earth County--Blue Grosbeak, Common Gallinule, Henslow's Sparrow

2013-07-10 Thread Chad Heins
I got out this morning to look for some birds for my July
Hey birders,

I got out this morning to look for some birds for my July list in Blue Earth
County.  There were three notable species.

Blue Grosbeak: Take Hwy 68 west from Hwy 60.  Turn left on 216th Street at the
MN DOT quarry.  A male was singing on the wire near the quarry in this
location.  I posted a photograph to the MOU site.  This is the same location I
found one in the summer of 2011.

Common Gallinule: Go west from the Blue Grosbeak location to CR50 and then go
south.  Continue south of Hwy 60 where the road turns into 535th Avenue.
There's a wetland on the east side of the road just north of the O.A. Vee WMA;
the bird was foraging on the south side.  This is the same location where a
pair nested in 2011 (they were not there last year).

Henslow's Sparrow: After striking out on the Henslow's at Minneopa State Park,
I was happy to find two singing males at Lincoln WPA.  Take CR32 south from Hwy
60 and continue south of CR13.  Turn east on 169th Street; the birds were
singing on the north side of the road not far from the WPA boundary.

Other good finds: Ovenbird, Blue-winged Warbler, Scarlet Tanager, Gray
Partridge, Lesser Yellowlegs, Savannah Sparrow, Grasshopper Sparrow, both
meadowlarks, Orchard Oriole, Dickcissel.  It was a great morning.

Happy birding!

[mou-net] Blue Grosbeak

2013-07-10 Thread Paul Egeland
On Sunday I found a pair of Blue Grosbeaks along the Sioux Trail(Renville
county 15) I first heard the male singing and stopped and a female showed up
carrying food. I followed the female up the road and she was agitated but
finally disappeared into a small bush on the hillside. The spot is about 100
yards west of where 200th street hits 15, this is about three miles west of
where co15 intersects co 6.
I have had singing males in this area on several occasions but have not see
females before. there are also singing Lark Sparrows in the vicinity.

2013-07-10 Thread Nathan Mielke
Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell
announced earlier last week the release of the State of the Birds 2013: Report
on Private Lands. It focuses on the importance of private lands and is a
excellent read and has some good information for all birders.

The article referred to also makes mention of one Minnesota effort in
particular, at Sugarloaf Cove, on the North Shore. I believe the reference
is on page 25 of the report.
