[mou-net] Laura Erickson to speak at MRVAC meeting on Thursday

2014-03-25 Thread Steve Weston
*Tales from Laura's Big Year*

*Thursday March 27, 2014 @ 7:30 pm *

Presented by Laura Erickson, Duluth, MN

Laura Erickson spent 2013 trying to see as many regularly occurring
species, especially those of conservation interest, as she could find in
the Lower 48. Traveling from Machias Seal Island off the coast of Maine to
Santa Cruz Island off California she found herself within 20 feet of a
mountain lion, getting stuck in the snow in the Chiricahua Mountains and up
close and personal with a diamondback rattlesnake. See photos of some of
the great birds she saw and find out what's involved in committing to a
birding big year. If you have never heard Laura speak, come find out why
this Minnesota author, radio personality, and national known birding expert
is one of the most sought after speakers in the state.

*When: *Please join us from *7:00-7:30 pm *to socialize over cookies. A
brief business meeting and the featured speaker begin at *7:30 pm*. The
meetings will conclude before 9:00 pm.

*Where: *Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center 3801
American Blvd E, Bloomington. From Hwy 494 to 34th Ave - S to American
Blvd; turn left and go 2 blocks. Center will be on your right. Also
accessible via the Hiawatha Light Rail line; exit at the American Blvd.
stop. Enter through the staff door in the middle of the building.

*All of our meetings are free and open to the public. Seating is limited
and if the weather is favorable and the turnout good, we may not be able to
admit all.*

[mou-net] open water near Albert Lea??

2014-03-25 Thread Rick Gibson
I will be near Albert Lea this weekend and curious to know if anybody can
share news on open water and/or aerated lakes in the area.

A few ducks and mergs might help the drive move along.

Thanks.

[mou-net] more on neonicotinoids

2014-03-25 Thread linda whyte
For those pondering in advance their spring planting, we may be wondering
how important it is to inquire about the presence of neonicotinoids in
potential purchases, Here's a link to an article regarding the usefulness
of these compounds for increasing crop production, vs their negative effect
on helpful insects.
http://m.startribune.com/?id=252104351
The birds we love are ultimately as affected by the fate of their insect
food as we are by the success of agricultural production. If the compounds
are present in our garden plantings, it could lessen the positive impact of
attempts to garden for wildlife.

[mou-net] Possible item for listserv

2014-03-25 Thread Valerie Cunningham
Hello, MOU Folks:

Just noted Lindy Whyte's timely message on MOUNet about neonicotinoid
pesticides and thought other subscribers
might be interested in St. Paul Audubon's upcoming workshop on these chemicals,
which pose a threat to pollinators and possibly birds, too.

If you could post this to the listserv, that would be much appreciated.
All the best,
