*Tales from Laura's Big Year* *Thursday March 27, 2014 @ 7:30 pm * Presented by Laura Erickson, Duluth, MN Laura Erickson spent 2013 trying to see as many regularly occurring species, especially those of conservation interest, as she could find in the Lower 48. See photos of some of the great birds she saw and find out what's involved in committing to a birding big year. If you have never heard Laura speak, come find out why this Minnesota author, radio personality, and national known birding expert is one of the most sought after speakers in the state. *When: *Please join us from *7:00-7:30 pm *to socialize over cookies. [mou-net] open water near Albert Lea??
I will be near Albert Lea this weekend and curious to know if anybody can share news on open water and/or aerated lakes in the area. A few ducks and mergs might help the drive move along. Thanks. --rick Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] more on neonicotinoids
For those pondering in advance their spring planting, we may be wondering how important it is to inquire about the presence of neonicotinoids in potential purchases, Here's a link to an article regarding the usefulness of these compounds for increasing crop production, vs their negative effect on helpful insects. http://m.startribune.com/?id=252104351 The birds we love are ultimately as affected by the fate of their insect food as we are by the success of agricultural production. If the compounds are present in our garden plantings, it could lessen the positive impact of attempts to garden for wildlife.
