No luck this afternoon looking for the Cinnamon Teal. Lots of Green-winged Teal and a few Blue-winged Teal. Mallards and many Killdeer. Not much else, but nice area to be in. [mou-net] Institute for Bird Populations list of 4 & 6-letter alpha codes
In response to my msg to MOU with the USGS site for alpha codes for N American birds, Janet Green directed me to the Inst for Bird Populations website. The lists they publish and update include all birds from North and Central America, and the Caribbean. So there are many more species here than on the USGS list. For you of Latin persuasion, the 6-letter codes are for Genus/Species names. You can select a table according to Common name, Scientific name, or Taxonomy. Thank you Janet Green. [mou-net] Hawks yesterday near Meadowlands
With the breeze out of the northwest and probably the sun as enticement a lot of hawk activity could be observed. One kestrel perched on a swinging wire about a mile east of the town of Meadowlands along Hwy. 133, first I've seen in St. Louis County this year. Most numerous were the rough-legged hawks, some of them paired, riding the air currents. Close to home I spooked a very sooty black, huge hawk off the power line and watched it circle on an escape route southeastward. For this one I had to check the Sibley guide once on getting in to confirm dark-phase rough-legged, not an every-day sighting, the kind that at first suggests something out-of-territory like--could it be?--the black hawk of the desert southwest? This is what spring is good for. Another local hawk yesterday was a red-tailed, not first of year. On a different but raptor-related note I would like to award anyone who can successfully point me to my first-ever screech owl (have heard them but never seen one) a small, life-like watercolor painting of that screech owl. Some common birds are especially hard to find. No captive screech owls, just a wild one in or near its roost. *Tanya Beyer* http://www.epiphaniesafield.com/home-page.html Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
[mou-net] Long-Tailed Duck Coon Rapids Anoka County
The Long-Tailed Duck is still present at 9:00 a.m. near the Coon Rapids Dam, but it has moved upstream. Park on Mississippi Blvd and Uplander Street. Follow the paved trail south into the park. There is a dirt path on the right that goes across a ravine (it has cement blocks and rocks in it.) Turn left after you cross the ravine then follow the dirt trail to the right upstream. Go as far as you can until you come to a fence. The duck is feeding in front of boat dock and there is a blue canoe sitting on the shore.
