[mou-net] Rock/Pipestone Counties - 12/7

2016-12-07 Thread Danny Akers
Hi All,

I did some leisurely birding in Rock and Pipestone Counties today, but didn't
turn up a whole heck of a lot. I was surprised to turn up a pair of SHORT-EARED
OWLS and a BARRED OWL at Blue Mounds State Park, including having both species
in the binocular view at the same time! Split Rock Creek State Park held a
group of about ~1500 waterfowl, almost entirely Canada Geese, but included all
5 regular Goose species (2 Snow, 1 Ross's, 130 Cackling, 30 GWFG), along with
Mallards and a single hen American Wigeon.

Aside from some wandering skeins of Canada Geese, Jackson Co. produced almost
nothing.

[mou-net] Lesser Black-backed Gull, Hennepin County

2016-12-07 Thread Doug Kieser
Late this afternoon (around 4:45) there was an adult Lesser Black-backed
Gull on Lake Harriet, Minneapolis, viewed from the southwest corner of the
lake. Still many hundred Ring-billed Gulls here, as well as increasing
numbers of Herring Gulls. Earlier, Bruce Fall had spotted a first-winter
Glaucous Gull.
A few Tundra Swans settled on the lake as darkness set in.

[mou-net] Golden Eagle Migrating Anoka County

2016-12-07 Thread Deters, Marshall (DNR)
I glanced out my window as I was eating lunch at the Carlos Avery Headquarters,
and caught a glimpse of a very large dark raptor with a relatively small head.
A golden eagle! I rushed outside with binocs and caught one quick view of its
underwings as it banked. It was circling on the strong west wind and was
quickly out of sight to the SE.

This morning I spotted a Northern Shrike on 205th Ave.

Yesterday at Carlos Avery there were at least two rough-legged hawks hovering
in the strong winds.
