[mou-net] Benton Morrison spring birding report
While looking for the snowy owls we found a red-headed woodpecker along 14 north just south of 155th street in Benton County. Then in Morrison County we were surprised to find a pair of horned larks feeding along the side of the road (33) on this first day of winter. We also enjoyed two great gray owls along Aitkin county 18 where they have been reported. [mou-net] FOY Palm Warbler, Green Heron, Cliff Swallows Westwood Nature center
Tonight we walked around the lake which has now become mostly ice free and observed a wonderful green heron just before the boardwalk area. Also noted were the many cliff swallows working hard on nest building on the back of the buildings along the 394 side. Then we were rewarded with the palm warbler, actually a pair along the boardwalk as we were leaving. A very nice evening at the nature area. The Great Horned owl was very visible also right off the trail as you enter into the park. The mate was probably still in the nest with the young. The nest is off the steps near the visitor center. Last time we were here we spent so much time looking at the owls we had no time to circle the lake! [mou-net] virginia rail at 180th St. marsh
As mentioned by Laura Coble we did find a beautiful Virginia Rail at the marsh this afternoon. It was going in and out of the dried cattails at the western end of the marsh. We had several good looks and were happy to share our sighting with a group from Carpenter Nature center and others. Earlier Laura allowed us to use her scope for the viewing of the Wilson's Phalaropes and it was fun to see them going in circles. They were quite crazy. Several swamp sparrows were seen near the rail also. And yes robins are everywhere. [mou-net] upland sandpiper: Mille Lacs County
We were happy to see a single upland sandpiper two miles south of State Highway 23 along the county road 5 in this county Sunday afternoon (June 24) about 1:00. It was sitting on top of a bale of hay in a field. This was our first sighting of this bird for the year. Very nice. For a hot and humid afternoon we saw quite a few species in this county.
