[mou-net] Today's lunch hour observations
My wife and I enjoyed an avalanche of American Robins in the yard today. They were flipping leaves right and left and doing some bathing. I'm estimating at least 2 dozen passed through. Mixed in with the AMROs was a lone Brewer's Blackbird which gives us our 103 backyard bird. Two American Goldfinch and a Pine Siskin worked over the finch feeder. All told we tallied 12 species in 45 minutes. Bill -- O. While we eating supper my wife exclaimed, LOOK. First one then two, then three, then four turkey vultures over the yard. Then I happened to glance at a neighbor's tree and there, sitting perfectly still, was a Cooper's Hawk. [mou-net] Peregrine Falcon
Today I was contacted by Quarry Hill Nature Center to investigate a report of an injured Peregrine Falcon on the 12th floor balcony of one of Rochester's high-rise condominium buildings. According to the resident it had been present on the balcony for two and a half hours. When I arrived I saw a Peregrine, soaking wet, sitting in the middle of a pot of chrysanthemums. What a silly looking site that bird was. I hope they send me pictures. Anyway, going through one set of glass doors, I tried to approach the bird but it became very agitated and started to try to escape through the palings of the balcony railing. It finally hopped out of its flower pot roost on to the balcony deck. Now I am very concerned that the bird will fall twelve stories to the ground if it is injured so I started to move faster to close in with my net. To make this a short story, the bird managed to squeeze through the railing and took off like a shot towards the water tower by Saint Mary's Hospital ten blocks to the west. It was obviously a young bird unable to figure out how to get over the balcony railing, preferring to sit in the rain in a pot of chrysanthemums! Bill P.S. I did not get to see if the bird was banded but I suspect it is one that fledged here earlier in the year. O. [mou] Overcoming BDD
Yesterday I experienced two events that took care of curing my Bird Deficit Disorder. As I drove to the Twin-Cities to hear Steve Kress talk about the recovery of the Atlantic Puffin and other birds in decline I saw a Common Raven just north of the village of Oronoco. At first I thought I was looking at a raptor of some sort as this bird was much larger than a crow. As it came closer on it path across HWY 52 I realized it was not a raptor because it was all black. The I spotted the final diagnostic, the shape of the tail. It alternately flapped and glided across the road. An Olmsted County first for me. At dinner I was gazing out the window watching the sprinkler wet the dry lawn and the Serviceberry tree. There was a movement in the tree that was not the result of drops of water hitting leaves. A hummingbird was bathing. It would alternate between sitting on a branch and flying in the spray. This lasted for about five minutes. I have heard of this behavior but this is the first time we've witnessed it. By days end, my BDD was cured for Thursday. Bill O. I have been watching the pair of wrens throughout the weekend. They have foraged on the ground, in the platform feeder (5' above ground) and the heated worm feeder. They seem to have weathered the storm. We had some rain mixed in (which formed a crust on the snow and rime on branches) with the snow so I was worried. [mou] Cooper's Hawk on the feeder
While eating lunch today, movement in the back yard caught my attention. A COOPER'S HAWK had made an attempt at something in the yard but apparently was unsuccessful. It ten flew from the ground to the top of our pole feeder and slowly scanned the yard for other opportunities. Seeing none it flew off after a couple of minutes. A few minutes later it returned to sit on a branch in the burr oak. A BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE found the hawk and spent a minute harassing it, circling the hawk by flying from branch to branch a few feet away. It stayed in the tree for about 15 minutes before flying off to the north in pursuit of something. The Carolina Wren last made a visit on 4 January at 2:15 PM. O. Yesterday at the MOU Paper Session I chatted with a number of folks about the Carolina Wrens visiting my feeders. As I told many of them it seems to come by every three to four days at either *AM or 4PM and predicted that I should see it Sunday or Monday. As predicted, one of the wrens dropped in between 8 and 9 AM this morning. My wife thinks both were in the area because she heard chattering from two directions. No Tufted Titmouse though. Bill O. [mou] Speculation
About 9:15 this morning my wife head and saw the Carolina Wren so I headed outside to put meal worms in the feeders. I gave a whistle imitation of the wren call and got a buzzed response and the bird popped up onto the fence. We sat inside watching and hoping that the wren would get some meal worms. It came to the feeder but seemed to ignore the worms for seeds. Then a Tufted Titmouse stopped by for a snack. The last time the wren was here so too was the titmouse. I am speculating they travel together around the neighborhood and the last time the wren was here so was the titmouse. The wren seems to visit every three to four days. Bill O. [mou] Carolina Wren(S), next chapter
About 15 minutes ago my wife said to me, Isn't that the Carolina Wren on the feeder by the shed? I grabbed the bins and sure enough it was. She suggested getting he meal worms out and filling the bowls. First, I grabbed my PDA with bird songs and went outside and played the Carolina Wren songs and calls. Soon, the bird landed six feet from me on the chimes hanging by the deck door. Then it flew to the burr oak and started singing. I turned off the player and listened to it chatter away. Then a second wren showed up. They both began calling. I played some more and they responded. THERE ARE TWO CAROLINA WRENS HANGING AROUND MY BACK YARD I put out worms in five places. Since then, it has visited the feeder by the kitchen window. I've put out meal worms hoping it will find them before the chickadees finish them off. O. I have a lot of luck with a bird bath on the ground that is kept full with a dripper. It is also very near the base of a service berry bush that provides refuge and staging for the comings and goings of the many birds that use it. Bill At 09:24 PM 8/23/2006, Ron Green wrote: Question for someone? We have a bird bath hanging by the feeder. However, the birds seem to be turning up their beaks at it even though we change the water daily. It does seem to get dirty rather quickly but we don't ever see them in it. I am beginning to wonder, based on what I see floating in it, if one of them is chewing tobacco and using it as a personal spittoon! Any ideas on what the problem is? Color? Are they expecting a fully tiled shower instead? Suggestions welcome. ___ mou-net mailing list mou-...@cbs.umn.edu http://cbs.umn.edu/mailman/listinfo/mou-net O. It was found on the ground and did not attempt to move or escape capture. I'll know more about its condition later in the week. Bill I forgot to update the listservs. Here is the reply from the Raptor Center: Bill, The peregrine falcon recovered in Rochester was admitted to The Raptor Center on 7/5/06 with spinal trauma and respiratory problems. Upon admission, the bird had very minimal use of both legs and lower body as well as respiratory difficulties. His condition worsened over the next two days and our veterinarians felt it was necessary to humanely euthanize him. [mou] Olmsted Common Moorhen
Was able to view the two Common moorhens at the EAST SIDE WMA this morning about 11:00. John Hockema spotted them and called Quarry Hill Nature Center where four of us were just completing the monthly bio-blitz bird search. The were just north of the island on the far side of the water. The island is situated beyond the point of land on the south side of the open water. A scope is needed, binoculars do not cut it. Bill O. [mou] Re: [mnbird] More on Olmsted Co. Moorhens
I was at the Eastside WMA at about 3PM and did NOT locate the Common Moorhens. Bill At 11:41 AM 6/29/2006, Chris Benson wrote: I just returned from viewing the Common Moorhens at the Eastside WMA/CR 9 marsh. They are focusing their activity on the small grassy island located straight out from the viewing platform. The island is located in between the two nest boxes sticking out of the water. I'm guessing that it's about 75 - 100 yards out. There is no other vegetation within 100 feet of the island. As was mentioned before, these are very cooperative birds!!!
