Re: [mou-net] MOU-NET Digest - 10 Jul 2024 to 18 Jul 2024 (#2024-95)
We started out with at least two male and one female RTHU. Male did courtship dance then female disappeared which is normal. Males quit coming to feeders. Occasionally see one on wild food. Not typical for here. Usually the numbers increase until fall. Also missing are the several families of orioles who were successful at fledging at least three families. We have had troubles with raccoons predating feeders so feeders are put out late and brought in early instead of being available 24/7. With limited access to food we’ve assumed our nectar feeder visitors have simply moved on. At any rate, disappointingly quiet for this time of year Charlene Nelson Grant County farm Sent from my iPhone On Jul 19, 2024, at 9:43 AM, Steve Wilson wrote: Nancy, we had the same thing happen here in Isabella, 23 miles inland from the Shore. Re: [mou-net] North Shore Fruit Report
We are in Grant County and we also had that freeze that affected fruiting trees/bushes. We also had fewer bees and other pollinators. Along with the drought our crab apples just did not produce. There were fewer chokecherries but the high bush cranberry did produce. Not sure why, if they flowered at a different time? Anyway, yesterday I had about 16 Cedar Waxwings hawking insects near sunset. We would normally see larger flocks of waxwings up to 250 at a time. We would also normally have flocks of assorted geese flying over and Tundra Swans. Have not seen or heard them yet. Wondering if they are migrating a different route East or West this year. Yes, it is preferred by hummers in our yard too, also dandelions, clover, violets. Hoping to be rid of grass eventually. On the edge of the grove we have nettles, milkweed and elderberry. Having coffee on the porch this morning, my husband has again commented on “Silent Fall”. There is absolutely no bird sound at all. [mou-net] N Ottawa Impoundment/Grant County 25Oct18
A late short visit to NOI at the end of the day yesterday yielded a large flock of about 60 Lapland Longspurs on the NE corner of the impoundment just north of 260th St. They were flying across the N/S road between a picked bean field and the just picked headland of a corn field. Difficult for me to ID these lifers because they were hard to see in the poor light yesterday, they kept moving, and their call couldn’t be matched to anything on iBird Ultima or Sibley. They were making a pip-pip-pip sound in flight. I did eventually get close enough to them in the corn field and one sat for several minutes very cooperatively on the edge of the road that I’m confident they were all Laplands. Except for the calls that didn’t match anything. If anyone can help with this please let me know. Because of the wet conditions, I would not recommend venturing beyond the perimeter roads. What I could see were probably thousands of waterfowl, at least 5 Snow Goose, one blue morph, Greater Yellowlegs in most pools on the edges and very vocal, a single juvenile Great Blue Heron at the stone dam on the south side, several Northern Harriers, one lone Snow Bunting on 250th St on the east side, Pheasants, Blackbirds, E/W Meadowlarks. Re: [mou-net] RFI Seward, Alaska pelagic trips
After an inland passage tour and train from Seward to Anchorage we rented a car and drove to Homer. Because every other boat company was shut down for bad weather, we hired a private taxi boat to take us to Gull Island in rain and wind for just couple hours to see Puffins and other nesting birds. Would highly recommend seeing the boat first before buying tickets. This was a tiny wood boat with nothing enclosed. We were very wet and cold, but we got very close to the birds. Thrilling in every way, white knuckles and all. Excellent woman captain kept us safe and knew the birds we were looking at. I've been trying to use more of the jelly made with cane sugar. It's not always available where I am so stock up when I do find it. Remember that all of our corn and beet sugar is now GMO. Re: [mou-net] Red Knot sighting GPS coordinates
the shelter building is probably at the intersection where 330 Ave used to be. the north border of the impoundment is 260th St and the south border is 240th St. the west border is the county line with Traverse Co and is 340 Ave. today because of the saturated roads I took Grant County 1 west to Grant County 42 or 300th Ave north to 260th St. it is a large campus. the Red Knot that is being seen is actually red - not in winter coat - and was just where John Richardson found it 24 hours ago in the area looking south from 260th St just east of the shelter building at 330th Ave. because of its color and the bright sunshine this morning and calm water, the bird and its reflection were easy to find.
