[mou-net] MOU Awards Committee is Seeking Nominations for annual awards - due October 23rd

2023-09-20 Thread Liz Harper

Hello to all!!

Many thanks to those who have sent in nominations already this year. We
greatly appreciate it!

For those interested in nominating someone for this year's awards, now
is the time. Nominations are due October 23rd

If you added a rare bird to your life or state list this year or learned
something from a new journal article or research project, consider
writing a nomination for the Brother Theodore Voelker Award.
If you know someone who has devoted many volunteer hours to help birds
or birders this year, consider nominating that person for the Volunteer
of the Year Award.
Do you know a young birder whose involvement in birding and bird-related
organizations stands out? Consider nominating that person for the Young
Birder Award.
How about the birder who you’ve admired for years, who perhaps mentored
you, who has made a name for themself in bird-related endeavors?
Consider nominating that person for the Thomas S. Roberts Award.
You will find full descriptions of the MOU awards and the names of all
previous award recipients on the MOU website at
http://moumn.org/awards.html
<https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fmoumn.org%2Fawards.html%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR1l4NG1qdLFxVT4UUOx-oEDWVgnycD6kdxUqVafSLFmbja7RBSSwxzN7k0&h=AT2ENNUGrmZCbjv6sMTmYX9jGpmQoYMreLMNZ7Ueo8S_SjUdnIZBrjdXO4LrBcm0vh5u4KiJl-GJ8qxn_MfhStRuz-TAiMfa5O5XEwGyVGovJxmyMbQHE-XUv-nPZi6_dA&__tn__=-UK-R&c[0]=AT3CvcML0TQTz-O7Wu-Tk6EgOi25ZIh_UJW-erIntWTRKzI7ou-mrx9UkTPGvOS6LqPplSRzzFlJ5-1Ufxl-zBnw86LkpXDprMCe-L890ohP9L8DyyF7yh_jeQU-akXn5AuqnHJH6HHd9CCOFbm_yHuobbjpNZq_i7vKCfjb4odDZpI26Vj4lQUPGfnIfLsMdzvW1fY18Cuq>

Making a nomination is simple. Just provide the MOU Awards Committee
with a description of the qualifications and contributions that you
believe makes your nominee a worthy recipient of an award. Nominees do
not have to be members of the MOU.

Nominations are due by October 23rd, and should be sent to Awards
Committee Chair, Liz Harper: awa...@moumn.org or reply to this email.

The MOU and the Awards Committee thank you in advance for your interest
and input in these Awards. Without your nominations, we are not able to
give recognition to the great achievements of our fellow birders.

Re: [mou-net] Crystal Springs

2020-06-01 Thread Liz Harper

Good Morning to all.

This site can definitely be confusing. Information about Crystal Spring
SNA is available on the DNR website
https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/snas/detail.html?id=sna02068  and a map is
here http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/destinations/snas/detail_maps/02068.pdf

Park here 45.263285, -92.768277 on the east side of the road. There are
many no parking signs on the west side and in the turn around (this is
so emergency vehicles can turn around). This is the only access point.

Hike 0.15 mile south along marked corridor to site - it is an easement
corridor. The corridor leads you to the SNA entrance - there is a brown
sign and a gate at the entrance.  Walk around the gate (there is a lot
of brush growth covering this sign and gate so can be easy to miss, but
if you kept walking forward you would see a private land sign).

For the Louisiana Waterthrush- walk the trail into the SNA it will
eventually bend to the right and start going down a slope. You will see
stairs on your right that lead towards the spring area. This is also an
area for Pine Warblers and Acadian Flycatchers.

I hope this helps!

Liz

[mou-net] MOU Award Nominations

2019-10-06 Thread Liz Harper
Now is the time to honor your birding hero, mentor, or inspiration by
nominating them for one of the four MOU Awards. Yes, four! MOU is
excited to announce a new
award: The Volunteer of the Year Award!  Please send nominations to
Awards Committee Chair Susan Elliott at honeywarb...@gmail.com
 by October 15.

• The *Thomas S. Roberts Memorial Award* has traditionally been the
MOU's lifetime achievement award. This award is for “Outstanding
Contributions to Minnesota Ornithology and Birding”, with previous
recipients having contributed to the ornithology in many different ways.
For example, one served as President of both the MOU and the Wisconsin
Society for Ornithology, another taught ornithology courses for 32 years
and thereby ignited interest in birding and bird conservation for
countless students, and the 2018 recipient was recognized as a “mentor,
motivator, educator, instigator, traveler, adventurer, story-teller,
legislative liaison, and bird bander.”

• The *Brother Theodore Voelker Award* is for “Special Achievement in
Field Ornithology" during the past year. The award honors field
ornithology in one of three categories: significant bird sighting(s);
something written (e.g., journal article, book, or technical paper); or
a field research project, as well as involvement in special events,
conservation, mentoring, and education. The Voelker Award has been
presented to people whose achievements have ranged from spotting first
state record birds to taking action to conserve land critical to boreal
species in Minnesota.

• *The Young Birder Award* is given to a person under 25 years old who
has contributed to our knowledge of Minnesota birds or to the MOU. Young
birders have received the award for an assortment of achievements,
including starting birding clubs, participating in dozens of Christmas
Bird Counts and Birdathons, and volunteering at places like Hawk Ridge.

• *The Volunteer of the Year Award*, created in 2019, is presented to a
person whose dedicated, useful service to the MOU and/or the birding
community at large has made a significant difference, and is a way for
the MOU to honor those individuals who have devoted many hours and much
energy to the good of birds. Nominees should be actively involved with
birds, with bird-related conservation, and/or with the MOU. Nominees do
not have to be members of the MOU. Current MOU officers and/or Board
members are not eligible for this Award.

These awards are presented each year at the MOU’s Paper Session/Annual
Meeting, typically held on the first Saturday in December. Award
descriptions and the names of all previous Award recipients are listed
below and the presentation speeches for the awards are available from
2009 and forward.

To nominate someone for an award, please provide the Awards Committee a
description of the contributions which you believe makes your nominee a
candidate to receive an award. Your written description typically forms
the basis for the award presentations, and we encourage you to present
the award should your nominee win. We know that not everyone is
comfortable speaking publicly or writing a presentation, so please
contact us if you would like assistance in either regard. Nominations
are due no later than October 15 and can be emailed to Awards Committee
Chair Susan Elliott at honeywarb...@gmail.com
(if you prefer to send your nomination
by mail or other means, please contact Susan via email for assistance).
Thank-you for your interest in MOU’s Awards!

*Certificates of Appreciation*

Throughout the year, the Awards Committee issues Certificates of
Appreciation to individuals, businesses, or others with a "rare" bird on
their property who provide access for visiting birders. A complimentary
MOU membership is included with a Certificate for non-MOU members. The
following are criteria which could be relevant when a Certificate is
proposed:

 * How significant or unusual is the occurrence of the bird?
(Rare-regular species and Regular species out of range or out of
season, along with Casual or Accidental species, can be considered.)
 * Was permission for birder access extended willingly and was access
   open to all birders?
 * Were there restrictions or conditions on birders? Were the limits
reasonable regarding the number of visitors, the time of day to
visit, the views birders could get or how close they were to the
bird, requests for donations or entry fees, etc?

Please contact Susan Elliott, chair of the Awards Committee, if you
would like to propose that a Certificate of Appreciation be issued.
Susan can be reached at honeywarb...@gmail.com
. Thank-you!

Bob Williams was here for an hour or so yesterday morning and the bird put on a
real performance. It sat facing us in full sunlight in a front yard small oak
for several minutes, then moved to the driveway just off of our front patio to
feed. Liz Harper came late in the afternoon and we got a couple of fleeting
glimpses of the bird. It appeared to fly off into the distance with a gaggle of
robins (or would that be a rubble of robins?). Liz did get another distant look
on her way down our driveway, but we thought it might be gone for good.
However, it appeared a couple of times this morning and has been feeding on the
driveway near the house again.

Our driveway is 1/4 mile long and the bird cannot be seen from the road. Email
me if you would like to set up a time to come for a look.

Re: [mou-net] Painted Bunting, Rice County

2017-05-10 Thread Liz Harper

Bird was still coming regularly into the evening.

Some more logistics - enter the U driveway from the east (northeast) end
(if you are facing the house this will be the right side). The driveway
is narrow and as you drive around the house, the feeders will be on your
left as soon as you pass the house. The feeders are very close to Dan
and Sheila's house (just a few feet from window). The bird frequents the
same black feeder (seen in eBird pics) most often from the west side
(right as you face the back of the house) and frequently Ts up on a
red/orange post. Dan and Sheila said the bird starts showing up around
900- 930 am. They are frequently in and out of the house and this does
not keep the bird from coming back to the feeders.

Dan and Sheila are very kind people and gracious hosts. In the sort
time they have been accepting visitors for this bird they have had some
not so positive experiences with a few birders. Please be good visitors!

Thanks!

L

City. (I just posted a photo on MOU home page.)

I asked the homeowners, Dan and Sheila Bossmann, whether they would mind if
other birders came to look for it, and they said all were welcome.

The location is just south of Cannon City on CR 20 (Cannon City Blvd). Look
for fire sign 18800 on the west side of the road. They have a U-shaped
driveway, and the feeders are in back if the house. Pull into the driveway
and watch the feeders from your car in back. They ask just that you be
careful not to block any vehicles parked there.

Gene Bauer and I saw the bunting twice within a period of about 40" this
afternoon, along with a number of other birds, so it does visit the feeders
periodically.

Incidentally, a good shorebird spot has recently arisen with the
construction of a new holding pond just south of Northfield, so you might
want to check that out on your way back. It is at the junction of Gates Ave
and CR 22.

[mou-net] Summer tanager Re: [mou-net] SUMMER TANAGER and CERULEAN WARBLER, Afton State Park (Washington County)

2015-05-10 Thread Liz Harper
Summer tanager present @ 1050 north end of Prarie loop approx .4 miles south of
the park boundary/ 50th (straight @ 1st fork). Calling from slope on west side
then flew over prairie loop trail and called from east side. Happy birding.

Re: [mou-net] Afton St Pk Open-Country Birds - Summer tanager still present plus black-billed cuckoo pair

2014-06-01 Thread Liz Harper
Sue and I found time between the rain to hit the north prairie loop @
Afton this morning.

Observed many species including over a dozen Henslow’s Sparrows, several
Grasshopper, clay colored and field sparrows, Eastern Meadowlarks, at
least one Bobolink, several Orchard Orioles, and the Summer Tanager.
Did not find the Bell’s Vireo, but as Julian pointed out the habitat is
perfect.

There was also a pair of black-billed cuckoo's in the small patch of
woods at the 50th street entry (just east of Pheasant Ct).

There was a good variety of open-country birds along the northern section of
the Prairie Loop Trail, in the northern part of Afton State Park, this morning,
including numerous Henslow’s Sparrows, some Grasshopper Sparrows, Eastern
Meadowlarks, a few Bobolinks, a pair of Orchard Orioles, and a Bell’s Vireo.
The Bell’s Vireo was singing near the northwest corner of the loop. As you
approach from the east, the trail rises and passes between some medium-sized
box elder trees. Beyond that point, mostly to the right of the trail, are
patches of shrubbery of the kind that appeals to Bell’s Vireos. The bird was
moving around in this area. At one point, I saw it fly across the trail, and I
think it was pursuing another member of its species.

I also heard again the distinctive “pit-i-tuck” call of a Summer Tanager, this
time at the northern edge of the woods near the trail junction 0.5 miles south
of the northwest corner of the Prairie Loop Trail.

[mou-net] Prothonotary warbler Lilydale Regional Park, Ramsey county

2012-06-07 Thread Liz Harper
Heard a prothonotary warbler calling while running in Lilydale park this
evening. It was calling near the north-east end of Pickerel Lake where
the trail coming down from the Bruce Vento Scenic over look flattens out
and turns northeast towards the Fossil Ground Parking Lot . (This is
not too far north-east from where a pair was observed at Crosby Farm Park.)

[mou-net] Possible 1st spring Summer Tanager at Afton State Park

2009-06-28 Thread Liz Harper
I was out at Afton State Park today and heard and saw what I believe to be a
1st spring Summer Tanager. Unfortunately, I was out running, not birding.
Is there anyone that frequently birds Afton that can check on this?? I was
following the Afton trail race course (see link below) and the bird was
singing away just off of the trail west of where the course rejoins the
Africa loop after the Back 40 loop.

http://www.aftontrailrun.com/PDF_Files/course_map/2008_Afton_Map_Web.pdf

Thanks.

While you are out there, stop by and see (well, listen to) the Henslow's
Sparrows along the top of the Africa loop (usually hear 2-3 calling).

[mou-net] Varied Thrush observed in Roseville this morning

2009-02-06 Thread Liz Harper
My husband and I observed and photographed a Varied Thrush between 7:55 and
8:10 am this morning. The bird was in the crab apple trees on the NW corner
of the intersection of Merrill and County Road C2. The bird flew a few
trees to the north on Merrill street.

[mou-net] White-winged crossbills in Roseville

2009-01-25 Thread Liz Harper
I saw several white-winged crossbills this afternoon in Roseville - there
was a large group that was scattered in the spruces along County Road B2
between Dale and Western Ave., a small group near Central Park, and 2 small
groups in spruces along Merrill Street between Howard Johnson Park and
Cottontail Park.

[mou] RFI, perhaps July is the time to diversify

2008-07-02 Thread Liz Harper
Hi, Al.

You may want to go to one of the workshops put on by the Minnesota Odonata
Survey Project. There is one in Sherburne on August 9th
