[mou-net] This weekend northeast Metro?

2024-05-07 Thread Missy Bowen
Trips planned? Fri, Sat or Sun? Anyone going out? I have had my head deep
in work out of state for the last few weeks and surely missed notices.

My plan thus far is to check warbler/riparian migrant action at my cabin on
the St. Croix river then head to William O'Brien for chestnut sided
warblers and other higher ground action unless there's a better offer...or
if folks want to join in.

Re: [mou-net] RN Phalarope, Wash. Co., Old Hudson Rd

2023-08-21 Thread Missy Bowen
eBird today cites a Wilson's Phalarope at that location, seen by 2 people.
. Are there two phalarope species on the same pond?

Y'all are right about this being an awkward location; it all seemed like
private property to me and the road is busy.

2023-05-26 Thread Missy Bowen
Saw them both last night, first spied from the Nokomis Pier looking north.
Easy to find, terrible to photograph, but we both got good enough views
through the bins. Also had a nice Baltimore oriole.

The MOU is an outstandingly helpful and friendly community, eager to share
knowledge and support. Thanks so much.

[mou-net] Thank you for all the suggestions

2022-07-15 Thread Missy Bowen
Thanks to the many people who offered suggestions for gifts for a friend's
6-year-old nephew who is interested in birding. I compiled a list
(unedited), which I've copied below. Of special note is the MyBirdClub,
which seems like a great resource and group. Also, the gift of time is
invaluable; spending time with a young person who is into nature - or
introducing them to nature - is one of the best things we can do.
Again, thanks, everyone!

[mou-net] Thank you!

2020-08-16 Thread Missy Bowen
Thank you to all who gave us advice on shorebird locations close to the
Metro. We went to the Jirik Sod Farms and birded that area. We basically
got skunked: saw a lot of starlings and killdeer (leading to a very weak
joke about "paging Dr. Killdeer"), a horned lark, and one Solitary
Sandpiper in a puddle near the other turf farm.

The Farmington ponds did not yield much from the roadside. We didn't hike
due to a footwear malfunction.

The morning's big hit was the 140th Street marsh. I had not been there
before, and really enjoyed the experience. It was on our way home, and I
was curious after reading so much about it through MOU over the years.
It wasn't
overly birdy but there was enough action to make it interesting, and we
could see that it must be a hopping place in spring. We tried hard to make
an Indigo Bunting into a Blue Grosbeak, but no luck. My husband had fun
locating and watching the antics of a pair of yellow warblers. There was
bulldozer and truck action at the top of the hill but it didnt intefere.

Again, thank you, MOU, for helping us have a lovely morning of new vistas.

[mou-net] In search of shorebirds...

2020-08-14 Thread Missy Bowen
All,
We were heading to western MN to check out shorebirds for a couple of days,
but family matters got in the way. My academic work starts next week. I
still need my shorebird fix, however. I have tomorrow open until
mid-afternoon, coming from northern Washington County.I will also have more
travel time the following week, but I am thinking most of the birds I'm
hoping for will have already left.

Jirik Sod Farm in Dakota County looks like a great bet. Any other
suggestions? Those who bird Jirik: is there any particular spot(s) you
recommend? I've never been there.

I'm looking for Baird's, Stilt, Upland, and Buff-breasted sandpipers plus
both Wilson's and Red-Necked phalaropes for lifers, and for my skimpy
Covid-year list I'd be happy to see a Semi-palmated, a Solitary (!),or a
Least (yeah I know!).

This group provides immeasurable help to a part-time resident like me, who
has to relearn species every year and limited knowledge of "go-to" places.

Thank you all!
Missy Bowen

Re: [mou-net] Red-breasted nuthatch at feeder

2020-08-05 Thread Missy Bowen
I have two properties near Marine on St. Croix; one in the river valley and
one up above, close by the northern edge of William O'Brien SP. I have
never had RBNH at the river cabin, and have them up above beginning in the
fall, ending in spring. But I've had two at the cabin this past week or so,
and this morning counted two, possibly three up above.

Re: [mou-net] Where are the Rubythroats?

2020-07-13 Thread Missy Bowen
No shortage of hummers in northern Washington County on the St. Croix. They
drink the feeder dry two or three times a day.

In the same vein, though, I have always had house wrens. This summer, no
different, until about a week ago, when we went from plenty of wrens to
zero. Are they done and out already?

[mou-net] Birding free day?

2019-08-27 Thread Missy Bowen
I have a surprise open 3-day stretch starting now through Saturday. I've
been bereft of birding adventures this summer and am eager to get out. I'm
in northern Washington County. Don't want to drive more than an hour or so.
I've been watching eBird; am not familiar with places that are run of the
mill for some of y'all, particularly Tamarack and Oakdale Nature Preserves
and Grey Cloud Dunes. Are grasshopper sparrows still to be found? I've
heard them but never seen them. Is the Neotropic cormorant still in
Richfield?

Or I could just go to the State Fair...

If you had a free day at the end of this week, and lived in the north/east
metro, what would be your choice?

Thanks in advance,

Re: [mou-net] car-accessible birding sites

2019-06-18 Thread Missy Bowen
We had great luck last year driving the 7 mile Prairie's Edge loop at the
Sherburne NWR. It's a little bit far away but a great birding day.

Closer to home, Big Marine Lake could be a good car-birding trip, maybe in
conjunction with another stop. The stretch of road between Manning and the
park entrance is often surprisingly productive. In the summer it's better
in the morning before the swim beach gets busy, imho.

I'm eager to see what others suggest.

That is bad news. We didn t see an owl at the FedEx building or from the
observation area. However, we located one atop another building in the same

We then dropped our friend at the airport, and, from his gate, he saw an
owl atop the FedEx building.
