Subject: [mou-net] Ruby Throated Population

Wondering if anyone else has seen the numbers go down this summer. From a
great start (over 30 birds arrived at the feeders.and who knows the
ones I didn't see) in mid-May, the numbers now have dwindled to less than a
dozen, and that's up from 3 or 4 because the little ones have fledged.
Neighbors and co-workers (the north shore and inland above Two Harbors)
have reported the same "drop" in birds. Bewildered. They started to
disappear early to mid-June and have not returned. Wondering about bird
flu.
We have had a huge mosquito population this summer because of all the
rain. But that hasn't dropped hummingbird numbers coming to feeders in
previous wet summers.
Any ideas/experiences? The numbers here have been steadily going up for
over
25 years. Many feeders out. Such a shock to have so few birds.
Thanks in advance.

[mou-net] Sherburne NWR Wildlife Festival and Open Interior Roads

2022-09-17 Thread Steven Chesney
The Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge is hosting a "Wildlife Festival" from
10-2 on Saturday October 1st.

It will have kid-friendly exhibits, a nature store/gift shop and food trucks.
This is near Zimmerman and Princeton.

Of special interest to birders, almost all interior gravel roads (normally
closed to the public) will be open from 8-2. Lots of wetlands and Oak Savanna
habitat. See Friends of Sherburne - Upcoming Events

Has anybody seen this year or was I perhaps looking too early in the year?

2021-11-05 Thread Steven Chesney
The wildlife drive closes Saturday November 6 and may or may not re-open on the
15th (depends on weather and road conditions.)

One other bit of (I think) good news. The refuge plans to move the gate now
at the Hwy 5 entrance to a point just past the Welcome Station (the first stop
with the restrooms and kiosk.) This will open up a bit of the drive earlier
in the Spring than usual.

[mou-net] Sandhill Cranes at Sherburne NWR

2021-10-30 Thread Steven Chesney
Thursday's crane count at Sherburne NWR determined 8,339 sandhill cranes
staging at night on the refuge.
At sunrise and sunset, still the best place to be is the parking lot on County
Road 70,
(goo.gl/maps/GsMuyeQ3Y6rYDeL78)
During the day, cranes are best viewed in recently harvested farm fields north
and northwest of the refuge. But this year the Wildlife Drive has held high
numbers during the day. Look about 100 yards off the road in both directions
right after the Woodland Trail. (Rusty Blackbirds on Nelson Pool and
Rough-legged Hawks too!)

They are refueling for the final migration flight in a few weeks.

about 3/4 mile from parking lot A6 (on County Road 5) to see them in Durgin

[mou-net] Sherburne NWR back roads open on Saturday

2021-09-20 Thread Steven Chesney
The annual "Wildlife Festival" at Sherburne NWR has been deferred again this
year. But there are two silver linings:

* Many of the gates that are normally closed will be open from 8 am to
3pm. This is miles and miles of back country gravel roads seldom seen by the
public. LOTS of wild rice beds and still some water standing
* The Eagle's Nest nature store will be open from 10am to 2pm for books,
t-shirts, and educational materials. Credit cards accepted

[mou-net] Wildlife Drive open at Sherburne NWR

2021-04-02 Thread Steven Chesney
The Prairie's Edge Wildlife Drive is open to vehicle access for the season!
Enjoy the views from your vehicle, bike or on foot. Open daily from 1/2 hour
before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset.
Some things to keep in mind:
* Speed limit is 20 miles per hour. Give wildlife and other visitors a
brake!
* The looped portion is one-way for vehicles and bikes. Plan ahead to
have enough time to complete the entire drive.
* Feel free to stop anywhere you'd like along the seven mile route. That
being said, be courteous and pull over to the side to allow other visitors and
staff to get around you.
* Prescribed fire preparation occurred on the drive yesterday, so you
will likely notice blackened prairie on the right hand side in the first couple
of miles. If you stop by later in the season, remember to check how much it's
changed!
* Note the wildlife drive may be temporarily closed to vehicles on
Monday, April 5 for more prescribed fire.

Re: [mou-net] GPS app

2019-11-11 Thread Steven Chesney
eBird does use the GPS on the phone to find your location and track your
distance while birding. If you need to navigate roads, Google Maps is
reliable. When hiking, I like GPS Logger II which can create detailed records
of your walk (or drive.) The Minnesota State Parks recommend Avenza Maps as
they have uploaded their park maps to it.

These are all free. No harm in trying a bunch.

fields on your left. The plovers are in the fields (difficult to find if
they are away from the water puddles). The phalaropes were in the ponds on
the opposite side of the road and Sanderlings were on both sides.

2013-08-22 Thread Steven Chesney
Lots of water and mallards. Red-necked and Wilson's Phalaropes were spinning
among them. Good numbers of Sandpipers, Least, Pectoral and Semi-palmates plus
Lesser Yellowlegs. Bonaparte's Gulls plus some Black Terns.

[mou-net] Blue Mounds State Park

2013-08-21 Thread Steven Chesney
Is there such a thing as a wave of Dickcissals? If so, it is here. Sedge
Wrens calling, Nighthawks abundant. Kathy picked up a Blue Grosbeak among some
Orchard Orioles at the Interpretive Center.

Subject: [mou-net] Duluth tomorrow

I am heading up to the Duluth area tomorrow hping to have the chance to
photograph a boreal owl. I have been monitoring the boards and have seen posts
on a couple ovr the past couple of days but if anyone has any tips that they
would not mind sharing on where there are good places to look I would be very
grateful. I will be leaving early and will not have access to e-mail, other
then calling my wife and having here check. I will have my cell phone with me
651-269-5952 so if anyone spots an owl and has a phone I would be even more
grateful for a call. I wiull be happy to give copies of any picures that I get
to anyone who gives me a hand.

Thanks,
Jeff Fischer
