[mou-net] Acadian Flycatcher in Dodge County

2017-07-08 Thread Williams, Bob
I stopped at Tollefson Woods in Mantorville and heard what I thought was an
Acadian Flycatcher. I never got a really close call. I stopped again on my
way home and I've heard it 4 more times, once close. It seems to move around a
lot so no visual confirmation. For those who know the woods, start listening
after your cross the bridge and before you go very far up the hill. For those
who don't it is just east of the spot on CR 15 where the Carolina Wren(s) were.
It doesn't call much so patience is required.

[mou-net] Northern Mockingbird in Hennepin County

2017-04-26 Thread Williams, Bob
Greg Burnes found a Northern Mockingbird in Hyland Park in Bloomington. Best
way to find it is to enter from the east on 94th.
There is a parking lot by the school where 94th dead ends at the park. Follow
the paved trail to the right(north) a few hundred yards. You'll see a park
sign that says Caution at the top. As the trail starts to turn to the NW start
looking for the bird. There are tall light posts for night skiing and the one
marked 204 is closest to the area where the bird has been hanging out in the
bushes.

[mou-net] Red Knot in Grant County

2016-08-10 Thread Williams, Bob
Butch Ukura and John Richardson just located a Red Knot at the Ottawa
Impoundments in Grant County. It is with a large group of shorebirds on
the north side of the impoundment(260th St) east of an overlook shelter.
This appears to be a 2nd county record.

[mou-net] Black-headed Gull in Lyon County

2016-08-09 Thread Williams, Bob
The previously reported Black-headed Gull made an appearance at the pond south
of the landfill east of Hwy 23 near Lynd in Lyon County about 4:15 PM.
Previous observers saw it at around 10:00 AM and around 12:30 PM today. It
requires patience but is well worth the wait. It is a striking white bird with
a bright orange beak. Nolan T. Meyer was with me and took a number of photos.
He will put the best on Facebook.

I was able to relocate the Hudsonian Godwit at Lake Byllesby this afternoon

I found 2 or 3 White-rumped Sandpipers and at least one Pectoral. These I'd
say were in Goodhue only. A scope is definitely required.

Correction, the White-rumped and Pectoral Sandpipers were much further to
the WEST and also seen from the Goodhue County side but you have to walk
out onto the dry mud-flats and look past the closest point to see them.

I was at the previously reported Tropical/Couch's Kingbird today. Denny
Barb martin were also there as well as others. We had a far off look at
the bird until about 10:30 when it disappeared. We looked for almost an
hour with no success. There is an 'island' of woods surrounded by the
mowed field and it might have been in the back out of sight, but that is
speculation. We were discussing where else this species had been seen in
the 5 state area and the only state that I found it in is Wisconsin. It is
listed as Tropical/Couch's Kingbird. A Couch's was found in New York City
in winter 2014/2015. Michigan Quebec also have records. I only did a
quick search

calling there as well, but again I had no luck seeing it. After a visit

[mou-net] Black-necked Stilts in Grant County

2014-06-13 Thread Williams, Bob
My wife and I made the long journey out to see the Black-necked Stilts at
the Herman Sewage Ponds today. First, for anyone making the trip, Hwy 27
is closed from I-94 to Hwy 55 in Hoffman so plan accordingly. Second, the
town of Herman looks like a ghost town compared to the last time I was
there(at least two years ago). The quick stop in the center of town is
out of business. Most importantly however I'd like to thank Doug Kieser
for finding and reporting the birds and Denny and Barb Martin for working
with the city to see that the birds are not disturbed. I'm wondering if
there is something that the MOU can do to recognize the people in Herman
for their willingness to work with the birding community on this. I would
think at least a letter or a press release or something to acknowledge
their help. It might help us in the future with other entities who are
hosting unusual birds that our members would like to see. At the very
least it might be a ray of sunshine for a town that seems to have fallen
on hard times.

the Scott/Le Sueur border. He mentioned that he didn't see it passing by
the same location yesterday but might still be worth a more extensive

He also said that it appeared to be a younger bird.

but I don't know how well they turned out as I'm not very good at focusing
with that system (and it was fairly windy with lots of camera shake). I can
post a link to the photos tomorrow night and maybe one of you will be able to
confirm this as a Carver County glossy ibis.

Either more Robins are on the move, or the more secretive ones that
overwintered in river valleys have come out of seclusion to feed. My
husband was stunned at the number of Robins he observed on Summit Avenue
this morning. I was equally surprised at the size of a flock in the SE
corner of Highland park this afternoon. They were clearly targeting
Hackberry and Crabapple trees in both areas, as well as taking advantage
of the softening ground.

Bass Ponds had huge numbers of N. Shovelers and Teal (Blue-winged and a
few Green-winged but alas, no Cinnamon) as well as Wood Duck and
Mergansers, both Common and Hooded. The Great Blue Herons have been
joined by a few Egrets at last. Raptors were well-represented, with Bald
Eagle, 2 Red-tailed Hawks (one being harassed by a crow), a Kestrel, 2
N. Harriers, and a Cooper's Hawk on the nest. The Belted Kingfisher was
fishing on the large pond that empties into the river, and the air above
that water was thick with hunting Tree and Barn Swallows. At the
shoreline, a couple of E.
Phoebe and at least one Yellow-rumped Warbler, vied for insects, nearly
colliding with me at one point. The Hermit Thrushes in the woods by the
stream were no less intent on food---I hope everyone had sufficient
success to withstand tomorrow's challenge.

[mou-net] Eurasian Collared Doves in Scott County

2013-02-24 Thread Williams, Bob
This afternoon I followed up on Brad Abendroth's post about a Eurasian Collared
Dove near Murphy-Hanrehan.
I was able to find 2 in the same area where he found one previously. This is
on Murphy Lake Blvd north of Eagle Creek Blvd. There is a large farm on the
west side of the road marked 17826. The birds were easily visible, one on a
wire and the other in an adjacent tree.

Subject: [mou-net] Red Crossbills - Hennepin Co

At about 12:30 PM today I saw a flock of at least 7 Red Crossbills at Wirth
Park in Hennepin County. The flock was made up of both male and females birds
and was on the ground drinking from a small seep that crosses the trail. The
spot where I saw them was just northeast of the Eloise Butler Wildflower
Garden in an area that has no coniferous trees in the immediate vicinity,
although there are certainly plenty in the park. I was alerted to the
possibility of this species by another birder who I ran into, but
unfortunately did not get his name. He said that he saw two crossbills
perched in a deciduous tree at the same spot, but because of his viewing
angle was unable to tell if they were Red or White-winged Crossbills. After
hearing this, I went off to look through areas of the park with more
coniferous trees without success. I then returned by the original spot on my
way home and saw the birds on the ground. They flew up into the nearby trees
when some walkers passed by, but a few returned to the ground a few minutes
later. Given the reports of Red Crossbills from Morrison, Sherburne and
Cottonwood counties this month, maybe we're in for a major irruption this
 year.
