[mou-net] Acadian Flycatcher in Dodge County
I stopped at Tollefson Woods in Mantorville and heard what I thought was an Acadian Flycatcher. I never got a really close call. I stopped again on my way home and I've heard it 4 more times, once close. It seems to move around a lot so no visual confirmation. For those who know the woods, start listening after your cross the bridge and before you go very far up the hill. For those who don't it is just east of the spot on CR 15 where the Carolina Wren(s) were. It doesn't call much so patience is required. [mou-net] Northern Mockingbird in Hennepin County
Greg Burnes found a Northern Mockingbird in Hyland Park in Bloomington. Best way to find it is to enter from the east on 94th. There is a parking lot by the school where 94th dead ends at the park. Follow the paved trail to the right(north) a few hundred yards. You'll see a park sign that says Caution at the top. As the trail starts to turn to the NW start looking for the bird. [mou-net] 9 Black-necked Stilts in Jackson County
There appears to be 2 families of Black-necked Stilts nesting in the area. There were 6 on the north side of CR 36 east of 520th and 3 more on the south side just west of CR 36. The adults were vocal and defensive. Bob Williams Sent from my iPhone The information in this electronic mail message is the sender's confidential business and may be legally privileged. Re: [mou-net] Baird's sparrow - Douglas county
I have been at the spot for nearly two hours now and have not heard the bird. Third Doug Kieser went on to Eggert Lake on the east side of CR 30 about 2 miles north of CR 26 in Lanesburgh Township and found 3 Willets along with a number of other shorebirds and even some Greater White-fronted Geese. -Original Message- From: Minnesota Birds [mailto:MOU-NET@LISTS.UMN.EDU] On Behalf Of Williams, Bob Sent: Tuesday, May 03, 2016 3:52 PM To: MOU-NET@LISTS.UMN.EDU Subject: [mou-net] Willets in Le Sueur County There's an excellent shorebird spot on the east side of CR 121 about a mile north of CR 28 in Lexington Township. [mou-net] Prothonotary Warblers in Sherburne County
Following up on a report of Prothonotary Warblers along Elk River in Sherburne County by Dan and Pam Guynn on the 2nd I went to Lions Park on CR 5 north of Big Lake this morning. At the canoe access I heard one calling briefly but did not see it. I went to a small access point on the east side of CR 5 about a half mile south of Lions Park and heard one calling there as well, but again I had no luck seeing it. After a visit to the NWR I came back to the small access south of Lions Park and heard the bird calling regularly in a fairly defined area. Soon after Herb Dingmann joined me(shortly after 1PM) we were finally able to spot the bird a short distance up river. [mou-net] Black-necked Stilts in Grant County
My wife and I made the long journey out to see the Black-necked Stilts at the Herman Sewage Ponds today. First, for anyone making the trip, Hwy 27 is closed from I-94 to Hwy 55 in Hoffman so plan accordingly. Second, the town of Herman looks like a ghost town compared to the last time I was there(at least two years ago). The quick stop in the center of town is out of business. Most importantly however I'd like to thank Doug Kieser for finding and reporting the birds and Denny and Barb Martin for working with the city to see that the birds are not disturbed. I'm wondering if there is something that the MOU can do to recognize the people in Herman for their willingness to work with the birding community on this. I would think at least a letter or a press release or something to acknowledge their help. It might help us in the future with other entities who are hosting unusual birds that our members would like to see. At the very least it might be a ray of sunshine for a town that seems to have fallen on hard times. [mou-net] Henslow's Sparrow in Benton County
I was not able to relocate the Henslow's Sparrow in Benton County this morning previously reported by Herb Dingmann, on the 2nd. But I did see and hear one on CR 12 west of 95th Ave NE and east of CR 3 on the south side of the road. There were a lot of Savannah's and at least one Le Conte's calling so it was not easy to pick out. I also relocated the Henslow's Sparrows in Mille Lacs and Sherburne Counties as previously reported. My husband was stunned at the number of Robins he observed on Summit Avenue this morning. I was equally surprised at the size of a flock in the SE corner of Highland park this afternoon. They were clearly targeting Hackberry and Crabapple trees in both areas, as well as taking advantage of the softening ground. Bass Ponds had huge numbers of N. Shovelers and Teal (Blue-winged and a few Green-winged but alas, no Cinnamon) as well as Wood Duck and Mergansers, both Common and Hooded. The Great Blue Herons have been joined by a few Egrets at last. Raptors were well-represented, with Bald Eagle, 2 Red-tailed Hawks (one being harassed by a crow), a Kestrel, 2 N. Harriers, and a Cooper's Hawk on the nest. The Belted Kingfisher was fishing on the large pond that empties into the river, and the air above that water was thick with hunting Tree and Barn Swallows. At the shoreline, a couple of E. Phoebe and at least one Yellow-rumped Warbler, vied for insects, nearly colliding with me at one point. The Hermit Thrushes in the woods by the stream were no less intent on food---I hope everyone had sufficient success to withstand tomorrow's challenge. The flock was made up of both male and females birds and was on the ground drinking from a small seep that crosses the trail. The spot where I saw them was just northeast of the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden in an area that has no coniferous trees in the immediate vicinity, although there are certainly plenty in the park. I was alerted to the possibility of this species by another birder who I ran into, but unfortunately did not get his name. He said that he saw two crossbills perched in a deciduous tree at the same spot, but because of his viewing angle was unable to tell if they were Red or White-winged Crossbills. After hearing this, I went off to look through areas of the park with more coniferous trees without success. I then returned by the original spot on my way home and saw the birds on the ground. They flew up into the nearby trees when some walkers passed by, but a few returned to the ground a few minutes later. Given the reports of Red Crossbills from Morrison, Sherburne and Cottonwood counties this month, maybe we're in for a major irruption this year.
