[mou] Hawk ID

2007-09-05 Thread birder...@comcast.net
Not sure on the size but it looks like an hatch year Cooper's to me.. The
yellow eye puts it as a hatch year bird, the head is looking more Coop's to me..

Yes, me and my bird ignorance are back. I saw a hawk at Carlos Avery that I
(very tentatively) IDed as an immature broadwing. I would appreciate it if
someone might look at this pic and critique my efforts.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I thought the same. It has a great Coopers profile, long and lean, except that
the wings are too long and the tail isn't long enough.

[mou] Hawk ID

2007-09-06 Thread ratt...@netscape.net

Looks more like an immature Red-shouldered Hawk to me. The tail bands are not
wide enough for a Coop. and the terminal dark band on the tail is not
consistent with Broad-wingeds. If I use my imagination I can see a hint of
rufous "red" in the shoulders. Just my thoughts.

[mou] Hawk ID

2007-09-06 Thread Richard Wood
Hi all,

If you have access to the CLO/Thayer's Birds Of North America program, check
out the picture of the immature Red-shouldered Hawk. That bird is almost a
100% dead ringer for this guy.

Good birding,
Richard

[mou] hawk ID help

2008-03-02 Thread Dawn Bradshaw, DVM
This hawk showed up one day at the feeders. Not sure if it's after the many
house sparrows or the family of mice that have taken up. Any ideas what it
is?

Saturday I reported seeing a Broad-winged Hawk in Kanebec County.
Now...I'm sure I was totally wrong.

All day I've been thinking it was bigger than that.
Totally white underneath. Dark on top.
It seemed big. Approx. Osprey sized and the position while perched, reminded
me of one also. But wing shape was wrong.
My very first thought was of Ferruginous. But come onin Kanebec County?
But then, I think I've seen a very similar hawk on the ground, during the
summer months, a year or two ago.

AAAggg! It can drive a person crazy!

SoMaybe a Krider's RT ?Do we see alot of those in MN?
