[mou-net] Black-headed Grosbeak, Crow Wing County
John Richardson found and photographed a BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK in his yard in Brainerd (Crow Wing Co). He posted the sighting and pics on the MN Birding Facebook page, and he welcomes visitors. His address is 409 Holly St. Brained. Crow Wing Co. He added the following note: In low lilacs and red pines right behind kids slide. Walk in drive way, back gate, look north. Robin nest on window of garage. Please be respectful of them if you come. The bird was still there as of 5 hours ago (sorry...I've been out and am just getting the report now). [mou-net] Black-headed Grosbeak - Burnsville
Monday: A male Black-headed Grosbeak was reportedly seen this morning at a feeder on the 2800 block of Hayes Drive in Burnsville. The homeowner reported: I had a strange bird at the feeder today. It looked like a Grosbeak, but it had a black head. I couldn't find anything like it in my field guide of Minnesota Birds. When I showed her the picture of the Black-headed Grosbeak, she confirmed the ID. Dave Cahlander (who lives about a block away) and I went to the house a little after 7pm and were unable to find it. However, Marge was wondering if that was the strange bird she saw earlier today. The feeder is not visible from the street. I will check with the homeowner to see if she minds birders walking along the fence or if she sees it again. Driving today in traffic on I-494 near REI, I watched a young Cooper's Hawk weave through the cars and surprise a flock of Starlings. When I last saw them, the hawk was hovering about four feet above ground and the starlings were lifting off right at him. Yesterday, I had a Cecropia moth banging on the screen of my porch. It had a wingspan of four or five inches and flew more like a large bat, fast and straight. I hoped it would land, but it quickly took off. A few nights earlier I had a Locust Underwing moth. [mou-net] Black-headed Grosbeak may still be present
Pat Thomas reports that the Black-headed Grosbeak at 6219 E. Superior Street in Duluth was reported in her backyard sightings log by a couple of birders yesterday (Jan 10) at 10:55 am. This is apparently the only sighting since the 7th. Perhaps the warming temperatures are causing it to visit less frequently? [mou-net] Black-headed grosbeak
Went to Duluth on this very cold day. Went up to the house and the owner said it was last seen at 1:10. I arrived at 2:20 and watched . Many siskens and chickadees but no bird . My younger son (14 years old and not a birder) said there was a brown bird in the trees to my right. I ignored him and said it was a sisken. He went back to the car to stay warm and I froze for another hour waiting. It finally showed up at a feeder and I went to get my son to see it. When he came and looked he said: So you found the bird I told you about an hour ago. I'm such an expert I didn't even listen to him earlier. If I would have listened to this novice an hour earlier I wouldn't have had to freeze. A good lesson for all of us. Never dismiss others reports because they may be accurate. Saw the bird at 3:30 and it was actively feeding. Join or Leave mou-net:http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives:http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

Re: [mou-net] Black-headed Grosbeak Update
Janet Riegle and I saw the Black-headed Grosbeak this morning about 8:30 and again about 12:15. We saw it in both the roofed feeders. Robins, White-winged Crossbills, and Cedar Waxwings galore, and the Common Grackle, as well as the usual suspects. [mou-net] Black-headed Grosbeak/Aitkin County birding
Yesterday, Leslie Marcus, Mark Junghans and I had the birding Gods with us. After having the good fortune to see the 1st winter Black-headed Grosbeak, we headed for Aitkin County for a day of birding. On the drive over to Palisade, we saw Ruffed Grouse, Evening Grosbeaks at the Risen,s residence and Black-billed Magpie flyby. In Palisade very close looks at Bohemian Waxwings and Purple Finches. And to end the day, on County Road 18 north of Palisade we saw Rough-legged Hawks, Gray Jays, 3 Ruffed Grouse, 3 Northern Hawk Owls and one Great Gray Owl at 320th and county 18. Long but very rewarding day. Jim otto _ Your E-mail and More On-the-Go. I was at the Thomas residence at 1:00pm and saw the Black-headed Grosbeak at the platform feeder and was able to grab some distant dark photos of the bird before it flew behind the garage into the cedars. [mou-net] Black-headed Grosbeak update
The Black-headed Grosbeak at 6219 E Superior St. in Duluth was seen several times this morning between 7:40 am and at least 9:45 am when I left. It spent a long time perched in the tall shrubs behind the large wooden tray feeder, before coming in briefly to feed. Each time it left (usually due to a Blue Jay coming near), it would fly out of sight behind the garage. [mou-net] Black-headed Grosbeak update
The Black-headed Grosbeak is still present in Duluth, with observations at 3 different times this morning between 7:45 and 11:00. This is now the 4th consecutive day this first-county-record individual has been present. Before visiting the feeders, please be sure to follow the guidelines posted on Saturday evening: - The address is 6219 E Superior St: take Hwy 61 through Duluth to 60th Ave East, turn left and go 2 blocks to Superior St, then turn right to 6219 (which is located on the inland side of Superior St). - Please park on Superior St (not in the driveway). - Because of limited visibility into the backyard (where the feeders are) and to avoid disturbing the bird, the homeowners have asked that NO MORE THAN FIVE PERSONS visit at any one time. - Walk quietly up the driveway, and, before coming to the garage, walk left to the back door and watch the feeders as you stand quietly on the sidewalk between the driveway and the back door. Please do not go any farther up the driveway, or into the backyard, or closer to the feeders. - Do not stand and watch by the garage, since this is too close to the feeders. - Do not call the homeowners in advance or knock on the door; anyone is welcome without prior arrangement, again, as long as no more than 5 persons are present at a time. - The homeowners, Pat and John Thomas, thank you all in advance for your cooperation! Please feel free to give me a call at 218 349 5953 if you have any questions. [mou-net] Black-headed Grosbeak update
The photos viewed this evening have confirmed the ID of the grosbeak in Duluth as a Black-headed Grosbeak, either an adult female or more likely a first-winter male. It appeared yesterday afternoon and was still present at the feeders today, and the homeowners have granted permission for birders to visit their yard under the following conditions: - The address is 6219 E Superior St in Duluth: take Hwy 61 through Duluth to 60th Ave East, turn left and go 2 blocks to Superior St, then turn right to 6219 (which is located on the inland side of Superior St). - Please park on Superior St (not in the driveway). - Because of limited visibility into the backyard (where the feeders are) and to avoid disturbing the bird, the homeowners have asked that NO MORE THAN FIVE PERSONS visit at any one time. - Walk QUIETLY up the driveway, and, before coming to the garage, walk to the left to the back door and watch the feeders as you stand quietly by the door. Please DO NOT go any farther into the backyard or closer to the feeders. - DO NOT stand and watch by the garage, which is too close to the feeders and may disturb the bird; note, however, it may be possible to see the feeders and the bird from the driveway before reaching the back door. - DO NOT call the homeowners in advance or knock on the door; anyone is welcome without prior arrangement, again, as long as no more than 5 persons are present at a time. - Be prepared to wait for an hour or two for the grosbeak to appear; today it only showed up at about 2-hour intervals. - The homeowners, Pat and John Thomas, thank you all in advance for your cooperation! Please feel free to give me a call at 218 349 5953 if you have any questions. If time permits later this evening or tomorrow, Jim Lind will be posting the other highlights of today's Duluth CBC. (Among the 60 species recorded were Barrow's Goldeneye, Peregrine Falcon, Great Black-backed and Iceland gulls, Snowy Owl, and Varied Thrush.)
