Chimney Swift fans might be interested in reading the article in yesterday's
New York Times magazine. It's about the swift's European cousin, the Common
Swift, and what's called its Vesper flight.

I should have mentioned that while yesterday's essay on the Common Swift in the
New York Times magazine contains some very interestingfacts and studies about
the European Common Swift, the author Helen MacDonald has written an essay that
is more like a poem. It's anallegorical piece of how human society and
individuals have something to learn from swifts. I found it a very touching
piece of literature.
Aside from the author's philosophizing, the author's descriptions are amazing
of how Common Swift flocks rise above the clouds, up to 6000 feet,at twilight
to presumably collectively judge weather fronts and then repeat their high
flying reconnaissance at dawn.

At 8:30 this morning, two Chimney Swifts were flying low over Hamline

south as they were heading north, directly overhead. There was no mistaking
that distinctive silhouette, nor the flight details. Swifts usually nest in
the chimney of the school kitty-corner from our house, and often hunt above
our backyard, but this is the earliest I recall seeing them in the
neighborhood.

[mou-net] Chimney Swifts in St Paul

2021-05-30 Thread Gordon Andersson
Bird lovers

There is a CHSW chimney in my neighborhood in the W 7th part of St Paul---
Monroe/Linwood School at 810 Palace Ave. I have counted the birds there
over the years. The first swifts I heard were a couple weeks ago. Last
night (May 29, 2021), I counted 222 birds as they dove down the chimney. I
found a record from July 30, 2020 of 122 birds. Another record from August
09, 2009 totalled 90 birds.

The SPAS Villa Maria "warbler weekend" over Mother's Day each year was based
at Villa Maria in Old Frontenac. Every evening people would gather behind
the building to count the swifts. I don't have total counts for those last
10? years and VM is now closed and has been sold. Someone may share those
records who participated in the yearly counts.

If you want to hear and see the swifts they begin to stage about 1/2 hour
before sunset with swirling flights of large diameters in the 3-D airspace
above the school. Realize that these birds migrate to and from the Amazon
Basin every year. They are on the wing for 16 hrs during the day. I think
they are all non-breeders and they are certainly having fun with
aeronautics.

If you are interested in counting, you can only get a good estimate as the
individuals dive into the chimney. That occurs right after sunset and the
numbers suddenly increase. Apart from video camera replay in slow-motion,
the best tally is done by using hatch marks on paper. Either one mark/bird
or one mark/five birds. (I have done both.) You add them up after the last
straggler goes to roost. You should bring a chair. The chimney is best
viewed from the N or E sides of the school. The school is between Palace
(N)/ James (S)/ Fulton (E)/ View (W). It takes up a city block.

Happy birding.

Re: [mou-net] Chimney swifts - Grand Marais

2009-08-11 Thread linda whyte
That's been my experience at two sites, so far. The first is one that
sheltered over 130 swifts last August. This year, there is a gathering
of a feeding flock, considerably smaller than last year's, of which
only a handful enter the same chimney. I believe there may be a
nesting pair in there, because sometimes a single bird exits the
chimney, then a single enters, repeatedly, as though going on forays
to feed nestlings. I understand that nesting pairs may not tolerate
too many "overnight guests," and perhaps the other birds simply
repair to their own nesting chimneys anyway. That presents a real
challenge for the count---first to identify the big roosts, then to
take into account all the smaller, dispersed ones. It would seem to
require many, many observers, both before and during the count.

[mou-net] Chimney Swifts use artificial nesting tower

2009-08-04 Thread Kelly Applegate
Hi Everyone,

I just thought I would share my success attracting chimney swifts to my
backyard this summer. I am the Wildlife Biologist for the Mille Lacs Band
of Ojibwe Department of Natural Resources. We are partnered with the
Minnesota Audubon to promote chimney swift conservation. I have been
experimenting with attracting swifts to artificial nesting "towers" such as
the one seen in the picture. When these towers are placed, it can be
several years before the swifts recognize them as nesting structures.
Knowing this I wanted to speed the process. I have 4 towers on the
reservation and one tower at my home residence. The 4 on the reservation
are unoccupied, my tower at home quickly attracted swifts. Here's the
story. I played a chimney swift vocalizations CD and within an hour I had a
group of 5 swifts investigating the sound. Amazingly, in the next few hours
I watched as the swifts played around the tower. Hesitantly, the would
pause in mid-air, take a peek into the tower, chatter in joy, and fly around
the yard at about 100 miles an hour in a formation like a chinese kite.
Later that day, a swift plunged down the tower and another followed. They
both flew out and revealed themselves as a mated pair by locking into a
glide with their wings held in a V-formation. It was quite an
accomplishment to attract swifts in one day! I believe the recording played
a major role. Ron Windingstad with Audubon MN and I are planning to make a
recording for distribution to those who have or plan to build a tower for
swifts. I encourage anyone who loves to house birds to consider building a
chimney swift tower, they are a lot of fun! Information for tower
construction can be found at chimneyswifts.org.

[mou-net] Chimney Swifts - In Western MN Towns

2020-06-24 Thread Jason Frank
In the past few years, I've noticed a lot of chatter about the abrupt
decline of Chimney Swifts in the Metro, and in Metro-adjacent towns.

I know that a lot of Metro-area birders regularly flock to the Lac qui
Parle/Big Stone, Yellow Medicine County region, so I'm just throwing
this out there for anyone who's interested.

I live in Ortonville, and Chimney Swifts are doing well here.

By my reckoning, there are several family groups around town which are
actively flying around, hunting at sunrise and sunset, and also at
roughly 3-4 hour intervals throughout the day, depending on the
weather. There seems to be at least 3 different clusters of them doing
this, regularly. Ortonville still has a lot of old chimneys, silos,
and grain elevators to house them.

Ditto for Madison, Marietta, Canby, Boyd, and Dawson. And also the
border town of Gary, SD (dare I say, it's a Swift Hotspot). I don't
regularly visit Montevideo or Granite Falls during twilight hours, but
I'd guess that, based on the state of their municipal architecture,
they should still be housing decent numbers of Swifts.

So, if anyone is out doing a birding run out here and also wants to
see some swiftly-vanishing Swifts, be sure to check the Main Streets
of small towns (especially near-border towns) here along the western
frontier.

They started entering the chimney at about 8:55pm and were done by 9:13pm.
I have made a short video with my new camera. It takes a while to download
and was rejected by the MOU list serv; it's a little large.I'll try to find
a way to downsize it from its 10 mb size. Let me know (back channels) if you
want me to send it to you.Curt Rawn

They arrived in Saint Anthony Park (Saint Paul) on Friday May 5. We've
found three local nest sites and have installed a new tower near Raymond
and University.

[mou-net] Chimney Swifts return to St Paul from the Amazon Basin

2024-05-05 Thread Gordon Andersson
About a week ago, I heard and saw a large swarm of Swifts in wide circles
above the Global Arts School (former Monroe School) in St Paul at 810 Palace
St and E-W street After the rains on Sat and Sunday evenings they are
active again. They roost in the school chimney at night and began to swarm
at about 8:30 pm. The best viewing is on the north side of the school on
Palace. The school is bounded by Fulton St on the E and View street on the
W.

They have been using this chimney for about 20 yrs or so. As the days
lengthen they will go to roost later. You will hear their chittering calls
before you see them.
