Re: [mou-net] Killdeer
There were PLENTY of killdeer, more arriving every day, on our week-long trip to SW Minnesota last week. The cccoool weather didn't seem to stop migration - we had ruby-crowned kinglets every day, as well as N. Harrier pairs... And many other great species. 2 warbler sp.: YRWA and NAWA. If I was to write down all the species we saw last week, they would cover 94 lines of email!! If anyone is interested, I can photo the list and send it to you back-channel. I kept a list for each day for the general area we were in: beginning with the Mankato area, going all the way up the MN River (to Ortonville), then down the western edge of MN, and meandering across the southern and next to southern tiers of counties. Great trip! Holly Peirson SE Anoka Co Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] Killdeer pics and theory wanted
I am looking for a pic or two of a killdeer I might submit with my weekly Nature Nut column. I decided to write on them the morning following the last big snowstorm we had in March, about 10 inches. Before all roads had been cleared, I traveled from Rochester to the Weaver backwaters and was once again amazed at all the birds that gather on roads and roadsides following big snowstorms. Three years ago I made the same trip following an early May 14 inch storm and probably saw more than 100 Killdeer on the snow covered 42 mile drive. This years drive probably yielded at least fifty. Although there were many other species seen, Killdeer, and robins were the most surprising. Besides hoping to get a pic or two to use, possibly one standing and one flying, I am wondering what theories are out there about birds, even Killdeer, gathering on roads after snowstorms. I have my own ideas, but will appreciate thoughts any of you might have. Thanks in advance for any hi res picture submittals or shared theories. Any pic(s) used will be credited appropriately. Greg Munson PS Watched at least 6 or 7 Bald Eagles harassing a raft of five to ten thousand coot in the Weaver Bottoms today. Although I didn't see it myself, grainy photos from my camera showed two of the birds with coot in talons Nature Nut Rochester, MN (507) 285-9246 Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] Killdeer, Elk River, Sherburne Co.
I birded the river starting at downtown Elk River and was surprised to hear then see flying off a Killdeer. There was also a robin behind the empty bank building. Other birds seen in the river were Trumpeter Swans, 50+, Common Mergansers 6, Common Goldeneyes 50+, and mallards. I moved to Otsego Co. Park and saw at least 16 more robins on the Elk River side of the river, a cackling goose with several Canada geese, and likely 100 or more trumpeters as well as more goldeneyes and mallards. [mou-net] Killdeer - Wildcat Landing - Brownsville, MN
On Saturday, while doing a scouting trip for the Houston Festival of Owls field trip that will be held on 3/6, I found 2 Killdeer in the open water of the creek just south of the entrance to Wildcat Landing. This spot is located on the east side of Hwy 26 about 1/2 mile south of Brownsville (Houston County along the Mississippi). Spring is coming!! Other highlights were dozens of Horned Larks, an Eastern Screech Owl, and quite a few Bald Eagles and Red-tailed Hawks. The biggest concentration of raptors were 30+ Bald Eagles standing around the edge of a small hole of open water (caused by a spring) on the Mississippi River. This spring is south of Hwy 14/61 between La Crosse and La Crescent. It is located about half way between La Crescent and the west channel bridge and is just east of the spot where Bonanza Foods was located years ago (there is an area with several businesses on the south side of Hwy 14/61). [mou-net] Killdeer ~ Hennepin County
This afternoon while walking at the Bass Ponds in Bloomington, Hennepin County a vocalizing Killdeer flew into the Hog Back Ridge Ponds rocky shoreline. This was a welcome spring time sight on such a warm, balmy afternoon here in the Metro!
