There were some FOYs to brighten the exercise walk this morning: Ruby-crowned Kinglet heard in full song, Golden-crowned Kinglet both heard and seen, and a flock of active Yellow-rumped Warblers by Pickerel Lake, foraging in the small, budding trees by the boat ramp. Arriving Saturday, March 19 were Robins followed by Sandhill Cranes calling Sunday, March 20 near Perham in Otter Tail County. Trumpeter Swans and Canada Geese in larger puddles in corn stubble fields, flying to river to set up shop. Saw my 1st Bluebirds of the year on the eastern end of northern bike trail loop in Elm Creek Park in Champlin. Saw the first Great Blue Heron of the year on the drainage pond on the north side of North Hennepin Corridor trail between Douglas and Noble Ave on the border between Brooklyn Park and Champlin. While running American Woodcock singing ground surveys this weekend, I heard and/or saw several FOY birds: American Bittern LeConte's Sparrow Swamp Sparrow Sedge Wren Soras came in last week.
