[mou-net] White-eyed Vireo (Winona Co.)
Rich Smith photographed a WHITE-EYED VIREO along the south side of Lake Winona yesterday and today. It’s been viewed by a number of folks as late as 4pm today. Coordinates are 44.036719,-91.644113. Dedrick Benz elaborated that “it was always near the south side of the bike trail in a still watery wetland with a few berries around...If you are looking across Lake Winona directly at the bandshell and across Hwy 61 at a blufftop house with a giant cross you are in the right area.” Good birding, Alyssa DeRubeis Golden Valley, Hennepin Co. [mou-net] White-eyed Vireo at Wood Lake NC
Based on reports of others who relocated the White-eyed Vireo at Wood Lake Nature Center about 8:00 this morning, I was able to relocate an adult White-eyed Vireo about 10:00 a.m. Tom Tustison, Ron Taube (who took definitive photos), and many other observers subsequently saw the vireo intermittently between 10:00 and 10:20 a.m., and perhaps later as well (I had to leave at 10:25 a.m.) Here are directions to where we saw it: >From the main parking area at the north end of the nature center by the >interpretive building/office, take the eastern Perimeter Trail south to the >intersection with the trail that would take you back northwest to the >boardwalk across the marsh (there is a bench there dedicated to Janet Busse). >Continue south on the Perimeter Trail until you reach another multi-trail >intersection with a bench dedicated to Ron Griffith and A. Whittier Day (there >is also a trash bin next to the bench). Continue walking south on the >Perimeter Trail for another 50-100 feet to a fairly extensive stand of >buckthorn on the west side of the trail. We observed the bird feeding 8 to 20 >feet off the ground along the southern edge of this stand of buckthorn between >50 and 100 feet west of the trail. Thanks to Conny Brunell for the initial posting, Peter Hoeger for very good directions to the site, and several other birders for their help along the way. Other species of interest at Wood Lake Nature Center this morning included 27 Hooded Merganser, 1 Purple Finch, 2 Tree Sparrow, 7 Fox Sparrow, and 3 White-throated Sparrow. All four of these songbird species were observed in the same area as the White-eyed Vireo, plus additional individuals of all three kinds of sparrows at the headquarters feeders. [mou-net] WHITE-EYED VIREO, HENNEPIN COUNTY
Travis Bonovsky and Alyssa Murphy found and photographed a WHITE-EYED VIREO today in Sunset Memorial Cemetery (adjacent to Hillside Cemetery) in NE Minneapolis (Hennepin Co). Images of the bird have been posted in Facebook's Minnesota Birding and MOU groups, as well as the "Recently Seen Rare Birds" page on the MOU's main site. Travis wrote up the following description: "Found in a line of Cedar trees near reflecting pool at Sunset Memorial Cemetery which is adjacent to Hillside Cemetery in NE Minneapolis. Very active "Warbler-like" behavior and staying mostly in the dark inside portions of the trees. Very obvious yellow "spectacles" and belly sides. White wing-bars. Did not notice the very light colored eye until photographed. Returned a 2nd time to try and relocate but was unsuccessful." Re: [mou-net] White-eyed Vireo and Sleepy Eye sewage ponds
I was at the Sleepy Eye WTP's earlier today and there were still 2 American Avocets (there have been Avocets for an entire week - I can't recall that ever happening before) along with 5 Red-necked Phalarope, Stilt Sandpiper and other peeps. Re: [mou-net] White-eyed Vireo
The White-eyed Vireo is still present at the previously posted location in Flandrau State Park. It was constantly singing from 10:45 - 11:15 while I was there, and eventually allowed great views. Pete Hoeger had arrived before me and said that it had been silent the first 40 minutes he was there. A few migrant warblers were present, including Connecticut. [mou-net] White-eyed Vireo New Ulm, Brown County
Vern and I saw and heard the vireo today at 3:40pm. We saw it at the open area where it was heard yesterday and seen around 4:00 yesterday. We were the only people there at the time. Got very good looks at it. We took turns holding the umbrella. Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] White-eyed Vireo, Nicollet County
Hi, At around 9:30 this morning Scott Meyer and I observed an adult White-eyed Vireo at 7-Mile Creek south of St. Peter. It was seen behind the informational sign at the last parking lot. We were not able to relocate it after the initial sighting, lots of human activity didn't help. The only Minnesota Vireo species we didn't see here was Bell's. Doug Kieser Scott Meyer Hennepin Co. [mou-net] White-eyed Vireo - Lac Qui Parle County
Around 2:00 this afternoon, I found a White-eyed Vireo in Lac Qui Parle County. Coming into Lac Qui Parle County from Chippewa County on Hwy 40 (which splits Lac Qui Parle Lake), take the 1st right on CR66. Almost immediately you will come to a home on your right, almost completely hidden by evergreens and cedars. I stopped here to check for Purple Finches (I didn't find any), but was puzzled when I caught a glimpse of a small green-backed bird with a yellow belly in the cedars to the left of the driveway. Eventually I did get a good look at the yellow spectacles, olive-green back, white wing bars, and a yellow belly. I initially thought it was a Yellow-throated Vireo, but knew something didn't look right, and a quick check in my Sibley reminded me a Yellow-throated Vireo would have a white belly. [mou-net] White-eyed Vireo, Houston County
Herb Dingmann asked me to forward this to the listserve. Yesterday, May 18, he found a White-eyed Vireo at Beaver Creek Valley State Park: I found a White-eyed Vireo at the far end of the Beaver Creek Trail this morning. Follow the trail out to the open meadow, where the trail splits. Follow the trail to the right to the far end of the meadow and cross the old bridge you'll find there. I'm guessing the bird was 150 yards beyond the bridge. If you come to an opening in an old fence, you've gone too far. I apologize for the late notice, but I had no signal on my cellphone most of the day. [mou-net] white eyed vireo
I had a brief visit from a White Eyed Vireo in my back yard bushes in the 3500 block of 34th ave south in Minneapolis. Saw it at 3:30 pm but not located since. There are still dozens of Cedar Waxwings hanging out in the neighborhood as well.
