Peace, Dan,

Once others have reported it, and perhaps documented with photos, the
listing may be corrected. Unless there's something at stake riding on your
list, patience may do the trick, though this non-lister wouldn't know the
protocol for corrections.

Meanwhile, enjoy the fact that the bird has survived and given you the
pleasure of seeing it. In this climate-change weather, many birds may do
unexpected things in the face of changing conditions. Indeed, they likely
always have, but now more folks are out there observing it.

As someone once said, "the birds don't read the books", or maps, or lists
for that matter. They do what they must to survive, and we need to support
that however we can.

I have to chime in on this as well...
For years (and I mean YEARS!) I had heard this song on my early stops on my
Carlton County BBS route and had no idea what it was (usually sung between
4:45am and 6am).
I think I used to record it as Brown Creeper! (as it has the high-pitched
descending quality reminiscent of Brown Creeper). On the BBS the early stops
are quite dark, and you can't just track down birds because of the time
restrictions.
Thanks to purchasing the Sibley app a few years ago, the mystery was
solved..."dawn song" of Black-and-white Warbler. Like Jesse noted, there are
few resources that even mentioned this song previously.

I think this is a good point to bring up, Bob! I hear this "canyon wren"
version of B&W warbler song quite a bit up in Ely over the summer early in
the season and many recording collections don't mention it. All About Birds
doesn't represent it, nor does Birds of the World Online, which only says
"A variation of primary song that is longer, faster, and more varied in
pitch is heard primarily on the breeding grounds (Bent 1953b
<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fbirdsoftheworld.org%2Fbow%2Fspecies%2Fbawwar%2Fcur%2Freferences%23REF56932&data=05%7C01%7C%7Ce0355e11f9294f70d00f08db5aeb8f81%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435%7C1%7C0%7C638203740074878624%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=4JJOZmdCNX79Nxy9MZsg%2FizXkxP8bVDD0oxy1j%2FTqzg%3D&reserved=0>).<https://birdsoftheworld.org/bow/species/bawwar/cur/references#REF56932>"
(Interestingly, eBird has a song that fits the above description but it
doesn't have that descending feel like in your recording - perhaps this is
a regional dialect, because I've heard descending songs a lot in NE MN.)

Almost (?) all warblers that we run into in MN have "alternate songs",
which can be quite a bit different in patterning from what we usually hear
and are taught when learning songs. A number are very rare - for example
Nashville Warblers do a short flight song sometimes, which I pick up on
some automated recordings but almost never hear in the field. Others use
theirs quite commonly, like Black-throated Green (zee-zee-zee-zee zoo-zee
and zoo-zee zoo-zoo-zee), and are relatively well-known, but sometimes
those common versions (like with B&W) have been missed by the literature,
with many ornithologists perhaps not living near where these birds actually
breed, or being out when they often give these alternate songs.

Generally, the alternate songs seem to function in attracting or reassuring
mates, while the ones we hear more often are for defending territories from
other males.

Good birding!

I hear that Black-and-White song often, and have been fooled many-a-time.
It's amazing how identical it sounds to the Yellow-Throated's song.

For what it's worth, Louisiana Waterthrushes also have a version of their
song that is very, very similar to the alternate Black-and-White/regular
Yellow-Throated Warbler song. I was recently in Illinois and heard the
Yellow-Throated Warbler's song from the canopy. I climbed the trail up the
cliff which, thankfully, landed me at eye level with the singing bird,
which turned out to be the Louisiana Waterthrush. Was hoping it was a
Yellow-Throated as I'd already seen Louisiana that day, but it was a good
learning moment!

Thanks for the prompt postings--this was close enough to home not to be an
actual chase 😄. Another birder was tracking it, so we did get a backlit,
silhouette view of the bird. I'm hoping it stays long enough for a better
look.
Meanwhile, we had lovely looks at other Warblers, including Blackburnian,
Magnolia, and Black-throated Green. A Connecticut was singing close by as
well, and there were cooperative Solitary Sandpiper, N. Waterthrush, and
Indigo Bunting in the mix. It seems everything finds food in abundance on
the floodplain.

That’s kind of funny because several years ago my brother Bill George and I
“chased” it at Whitewater. We hung out at the place you described. I was
doubting Thomas because I had never chased a bird. We waited and waited and
then I thought I heard its call. We played it’s song and shortly thereafter it
appeared. I was in awe. We then had a picnic lunch by the river and the bird
followed us there and sang and sang and never left us alone. Afterward I swore
that this male confused us for female Yellow Throated warblers. My friend Bill
Stjern said that sometimes males will go out of their range and spend the
entire summer looking for a mate in vain. Lol

[mou-net] Yellow-throated Warbler: Hennepin Co.

2016-05-22 Thread Douglas Mayo
A Yellow-throated Warbler was still present at Gold Medal Park in Minneapolis
around 3:30 today. It was in the trees between the river and the
bike/pedestrian path, about 300 feet west of where the path descends towards
the river.

Saw two yellow-throated warbler near Gold Medal Park around 8:15 PM:

East of I35W memorial, YTWA Flew south across west river parkway to arbor vitae
hedge. Shuffled around in them for a bit then into river birch tree where I got
a good view of one bird. Then flew back across w river parkway into line of
mixed trees. Always issuing "chip" call.

2016-05-19 Thread Joseph Lindell
I found the Yellow Throated Warbler today at 3:15 right at the corner of 11th
St. and W. River Parkway in Gold Medal Park. I found it again, briefly at 3:30
in the pines behind the 35W memorial.

It sang the first time, which helped me find it.

It was too quick for a photo, however, but I got a decent look through
binoculars.

2016-05-14 Thread Jonathan Beck
We were able to find it tonight from around 5PM - 6PM. First saw it over on
W River Road in the trees along the fence on the bike path. Did not get a
good look here, but later found it on the far east side of the park in a
~20' high oak. There is a nest in the oak tree that the warbler was seen
in, but not sure if it was the next of this bird. Saw several other birders
and we all got a nice look at this bird. Photo posted to the MOU main page
from this evening.

The Yellow-throated Warbler found by Nick Minor earlier this afternoon at
Gold Medal Park was still present and cooperative at 4:30, singing and
aggressively responding to light pishing. This is just east of the Guthrie

Preparations were underway for a 1-mile run here, including a band setting
up, so locating this bird this evening might be difficult.

At 10 a.m. today (5/23), four other observers and I saw a Yellow-throated
Warbler from a distance of 20 feet for about 10 seconds while the bird hopped
in the grass in the picnic area below (north of) the Whitewater State Park
Nature Store (same general area where this species occurred last May, first
Winona County record, and then bred successfully). Heard what was likely the
same bird singing in early afternoon on 5/22 (but could not locate it), and
then again on 5/23 (when I did relocate it as it sang 50-60 feet up in a tall
white pine across the entrance road south of the Nature Store, immediately
adjacent to and east of Rt. 74). Please stop in the Nature Store or the park HQ
to get a permit if you don't have one. Otherwise your car may be ticketed.

One Louisiana Waterthrush was singing about noon along the Trout Run Creek
trail about 0.5 miles south of the trailhead parking lot, which you can access
by car from the Nature Store parking lot (the two lots are located about 0.5
miles apart).

One Tufted Titmouse was singing at about 8 a.m. near the intersection of Rt. 39
and Calico Hill Road. This intersection is accessed by driving north on Rt. 74
from the Whitewater Park HQ, turning left (west) on Rt. 39 (after the turn the
Lazy D Campgrounds will be on your right), and driving 0.9 miles to the
intersection with Calico Hill Road on your right. Blue-winged Warbler, Wood
Thrush, and Veery were all singing near this intersection as well. An extremely
late Purple Finch was singing in a hedgerow about 0.5 miles up Calico Hill
Road.

Observed 102 species, including 19 species of warblers, in and around
Whitewater State Park and Whitewater WMA on 5/22-23.

May, first Winona County record, and then bred successfully). Heard what
was likely the same bird singing in early afternoon on 5/22 (but could not
locate it), and then again on 5/23 (when I did relocate it as it sang 50-60
feet up in a tall white pine across the entrance road south of the
Nature Store, immediately adjacent to and east of Rt. 74). Please stop in
the Nature Store or the park HQ to get a permit if you don't have one.
Otherwise your car may be ticketed.

One Louisiana Waterthrush was singing about noon along the Trout Run Creek
trail about 0.5 miles south of the trailhead parking lot, which you can
access by car from the Nature Store parking lot (the two lots are located
about 0.5 miles apart).

One Tufted Titmouse was singing at about 8 a.m. near the intersection of
Rt. 39 and Calico Hill Road. This intersection is accessed by driving north
on Rt. 74 from the Whitewater Park HQ, turning left (west) on Rt. 39 (after
the turn the Lazy D Campgrounds will be on your right), and driving
0.9 miles to the intersection with Calico Hill Road on your right.
Blue-winged Warbler, Wood Thrush, and Veery were all singing near this
intersection as well. An extremely late Purple Finch was singing in a
hedgerow about 0.5 miles up Calico Hill Road.

Observed 102 species, including 19 species of warblers, in and around
Whitewater State Park and Whitewater WMA on 5/22-23.

Also present at the location of the Yellow-throated Warbler found by Jason
were a Bay-breasted Warbler and a Gray-cheeked Thrush. Both warblers spent
most of their time feeding on the sidewalks and street, along with 3 or more

[mou-net] Yellow-throated Warbler, Minneapolis- Hennepin County

2014-05-21 Thread Jason Caddy
I was walking to the park this morning with my two girls and had my binoculars
with to see if I could snag some migrating warblers when I saw a group of birds
foraging on the ground to the right of me. Most of the flock was Tennessee
Warblers but much to my delight the was a brilliant Yellow-throated Warbler
foraging with them. The bird was only about 10 feet away so I was able to
identify it instantly but of course I checked my Sibley Guide to Birds of the
East that I had with me just to make sure. The warbler only had bright yellow
on the neck and no-where else, it had a grayish back and two distinct
wing-bars, it had a triangular black facial pattern that extended to the sides
of its throat and had a longish bill.
The bird was on the north side of the house on the southwestern corner of 41st
and Nicollet, across the street from MLK park. I saw the bird at around 11:15am
and looked again at 1:45pm but did not relocate it. There are a lot of tall
trees in the area and a lot of small birds flying around so it will be tricky
to re-find but I would be surprised if it totally left.
Always remember to bring your binoculars with you in May in Minnesota, you
never know what might turn up :-)

[mou-net] Yellow-throated Warbler, Winona Cty refound

2013-05-10 Thread Dedrick Benz
After reading Dave Zumeta's post on MOU-Net, I went to Whitewater State Park
and observed the Yellow-throated Warbler in tall pines between Hwy 74 and the
picnic shelter in the picnic area that is just north of the Nature Store
parking lot. The bird was singing constantly and foraging in the upper 1/3 of
the pines. I observed the bird from about 4:40 to 4:50 PM Friday.

[mou-net] Yellow-throated Warbler

2013-05-10 Thread David Zumeta
This morning (Friday, May 10) between 10:30 a.m. and noon, three companions
and I had excellent views of a singing male Yellow-throated Warbler at
Whitewater State Park. The bird was in mature hardwoods and white pine
around the parking lot for the state park nature store, as well as in the
adjacent picnic area across the Whitewater River from the swimming beach.

The bird was white on the belly with a bright yellow upper breast and
throat, with distinct black markings on the sides of the yellow throat and
breast. It was gray on the back and crown, with a black facial patch, a
white patch behind the black patch, and a distinct white line over the eye.
It had two white wing bars. Its song was atypical of this species, although
somewhat reminiscent of a softer, quieter Louisiana Waterthrush song,
especially in that it ascended at the end, although it did not descend at
the beginning and middle of the song like a Louisiana Waterthrush song
would. This species was not on Bob Janssen's Whitewater State Park bird
list, so it appears to be a new species record for the park. I have seen
this species once before in 31+ years of birding in Minnesota, but numerous
times while living for 3 years in Indiana as well as while birding
elsewhere in the eastern and southern U.S. -- Dave Zumeta, Minneapolis
