Re: What are .xpt files? And why does the new RealPlayer put such a file into Mozilla's component directory?
Firstly, let me say that I am not using RealOne. TGOS wrote: The files are named nppl3260.dll This is the component (at least I would assume that) nppl3260.xpt And this is the typelib for it. It basically describes the interfaces that are supported by the component. The DLL file is a plugin DLL file, Are you sure? What is it good for? Mozilla has own XPT files, so may it's important to make the plugin work? Yes, each interface that is used by a component must have an associated .xpt file. (afaik). I moved these two files to the Mozilla plugin directory, I hope the XPT file will also work from there... but why is it actually there? Probably because components belong in components? RealNetworks must have created this file only for Netscape6/Mozilla, because no other browser has probably ever heard of a XPT file True. (not counting browsers embedding Mozilla, such as Kmeleon). and other browsers also have no components directory. MSIE has indeed no components directory. It uses c:\windows\system for this purpose. Is it safe to delte the XPT file? Probably not. Can I somehow look inside Yes, use xpt_dump.exe. In a MS-DOS Prompt, type this (in the Mozilla directory): xpt_dump components\nppl3260.xpt (you can add a -v for verbose output) Could you post the output of that command here? I'm interested in it. Will it also work from within the plugin directory? I don't think so. -- They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. -- Benjamin Franklin

Linux XMMS/Mozilla sound/freeze
Hi. If I have XMMS playing a tune and enter a website with sound (or possibly just flash?) Mozilla freezes until I stop XMMS, releasing the sound resources. This must be a common problem, any workarounds? This is not an issue with other applications (ie. TV Card). Morten

Re: What are .xpt files? And why does the new RealPlayer put such a file into Mozilla's component directory?
TGOS wrote: I just ask, because when I install RealOne (the new player of RealNetworks, which is slower than their last one... unbelievable that this is even possible), it puts two DLL files into my Mozilla plugin directory (no idea what they are good for, they are not associated with any MIME type at the about:plugins page) and another DLL file into the components directory, as well as a XPT file. The dll + xpt files are the new plugin format. Viewpoints new plugin uses them (If you search for it in bugzilla). I believe this new format allows the plugins to be scripted without the need for LiveConnect being embedded in the JRE. So when real one is placing those files in the mozilla directory, it's just installing the new format of plugin.

Email Links opening Explorer and Netscape 6.2
Hi, I recently unpgraded from NS 4.7 to NS 6.2.1. I use MS Outlook for email and have Win 98SE. I have a strange problem with which browser opens when I click on an EMAIL link in Outlook. On some emails when I hit a link Netscape opens another window and no problem. On other links though Explorer 5.5 opens. It just depends on who the email is from. Eial from Ebay always open in links in Netscape but many of my stock related ones like from CBS Marketwatch open Explorer? I can not figure out how to stop Explorer from opening. I have gone into NS Preferences, advanced , system and all types of files listed are checked off as Netscape being the default program. . I have opened Explorer and went to internet preferences and it is set that Explorer should check to see if it is the default browser. Still the problems persists. Would appreciate any help. Thanks Mark

Lies, damn lies, and MozillaZine?
If you've been to mozillazine.org lately, you'll notice that they tell you that Internet Explorer and Netscape 4.xx will not render the site properly because of their poor CSS capabilities, heck, even Opera, which is nearly as standards-compliant as Mozilla/Netscape 6.x itself does a terrible job rendering their pages. The only browser that can render it correctly, is a Mozilla or Mozilla-based browser. Oh yes, they say, this is because of Mozilla's superior standards-compliance... Right, well, a friend of mine looked over the page and found that they browser-sniff, and if it doesn't detect you using Mozilla or Netscape 6.xx, or the like, it simply directs your browser to a non-existent CSS file, IE.css I believe it was, now he was able to 'repair the page and load it in Internet Explorer and Opera perfectly by modifying the page source so that IE and Opera could load the existent Mozilla.css. So what gives? Well, it appears that mozillazine.org is using a simple deception that will fool most users into thinking that no other browser is as advanced/capable as Mozilla, if this were true however, they would simply need to write the pages in standards that IE and Opera simply don't support and let them really FUBAR the page on their own, but as is, they must sabotage it so that other browsers cannot render it correctly. Now, believe me, I hate Internet Explorer with a passion, but come on, if Mozillazine.org is doing this deliberately, then that really says something about them, and it gives Mozilla a bad name. If you are as outraged by this as I am, then please E-Mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] and ask them to stop this. Thank you, Ryan Davis

Yes. The only browser that can render it correctly, is a Mozilla or Mozilla-based browser. So far so good. Oh yes, they say, this is because of Mozilla's superior standards-compliance... Yes. I'd love to see this friend of yours page. We tried 10+ different ways to get IE to layout the page the same as Mozilla did. The reason we point to a different style sheet for IE, is because we plan to add one. IE does not layout the page properly, unless you are talking about IE on the mac, which I never had a chance to test. We are not deceiving anyone. IE does not support the CSS2 properties that we are using. Go look at MSDN for yourself. Then go look at our talkback on this very subject and read the posts from when we made the switch, and gave the same style sheet for everyone. Now, believe me, I hate Internet Explorer with a passion, but come on, if Mozillazine.org is doing this deliberately, then that really says something about them, and it gives Mozilla a bad name. We are doing this deliberately. We will have an IE style sheet up soon that hopefully makes the site look better. I thought those were exactly the bugs that have to be cleared pre-1.0. It has been decided by the Maozilla Politburo that Mozilla will go 1.0 on a particular date on the calandar, regardless of defects, lousy performance, or any other criteria. I forget what that date is, perhaps an AOL Party Member can enlighten us. Note that this is the exact same release method that made the Netscape 6.0 rollout so successful.
Netscape 6.2 - password nag on newsgroups
Working as sole user under Windows XP home edition. No doubt I have misunderstood something, but every time I try to access a newsgroup Netscape asks me to enter a password for the newsgroup and a password. Even though I tick the box asking Password Manager to remember the values I enter, I am still nagged every time. And no matter I enter, I always end up with an 'Authentication Error'. On some newsgroups I now find I cannot read the text of any messages. I have tried uninstalling Netscape 6.2 and reinstalling it but it does not seem to make any difference. Can someone on this newsgroup tell me what I am doing wrong please? Vic Joseph
Re: Netscape 6.2 - password nag on newsgroups (more detail)
The actual messages concerned are 'Please enter a username for news server access' and 'Please enter a password for news server access' Sometimes cancelling the messages seems to be sufficient, but sometimes they keep repeating (depending on the server/newsgroup). Error: Temporary directory doesn't exist. Enter new directory in the preferences box
I recently tried installing Netscape Communicator 4.79 in a computer running Windows 95. The installation process went fine, but every time I run Netscape, I get the error message box that reads Directory d:\temp does not exist. I clicked Ok and everything seemed to be fine until I tried using the Publish option in the Composer. Then, I couldn't upload the page I created with the Composer, because I got the following message: Error: temporary directory d:\temp does not exist. Please enter a new directory in the preferences box. The problem here is that the computer doesn't have a d: drive. And I can't find the field where I should correct this problem in the Preferences box (in the Edit menu). I came to the conclusion that the problem can't be fixed via the Preferences box. I found someone who had had a similar problem, saying that the Autoexec.bat file should be edited, to make sure that 'set temp' exists and is correct. for example, to add 'set temp=c:\tmp' and to make sure the directory \tmp exists. However, I don't want to play with the Autoexec file before confirming that this will take care of the problem. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks. Carlo.

Alex wrote: In Netscape 4.7, from the mail window, I could access bookmarks from the Communicator menu item and access the web. How do I do this in Netscape 6.2? It doesn't contain bookmarks and doesn't allow me to change the tool bar and there doesn't seem to be a personal toolbar for the mail window which can contain the bookmarks icon. How can I do what I did before in 4.7x?Where you clicking Communicator on the top toolbar of mail?I never once did that, and thanks for the tip.I always click on the button equivalent to the Homepage in either 4.7x or 6.2.1 Quick Launch toolbar. You can have the Bookmark button there, ready to go. Or in 6.2.1 you have the Tasks button/Navigator. This will require one extra click. You should be able to get the same or better results,if you can endure the Sidebar, but I think that the Quick Launch approach is quicker,if you have to use Bookmarks quite often, while you are in Mail. TIA. How are you do it in 4.x?
