This reminds me of the great foresight Beatrix Potter had to add land
to the National Trust in the UK. The land trust idea is a very good one
and I think it will work here. Thanks Michael for this excellent idea.
Let's try to make it work.

When she died on 22 December 1943, Beatrix Potter left fourteen farms
and 4000 acres of land to the National Trust, together with her flocks
of Herdwick sheep. The Trust now owns 91 hill farms, many of which have
a mainly Herdwick landlord's flock with a total holding of about 25000
sheep. This was her gift to the nation, her own beloved countryside for
all to enjoy.

RE: [Mpls] Park Board considering selling park land (BluffStreet-Gasworks)

2005-08-31 Thread Michael Hohmann
Seems to me that historic arguments for keeping the MPRB as a separate Board
were always based on the fact that a separate MPRB would protect and
preserve the parklands, and not sell them off to raise cash when times get
tight, which presumably, the city would/could do (just as the MPRB
would/could/might do). Perhaps our parklands should be put into a
permanent, protective trust that protects and preserves, regardless of
management entity or personalities involved at any point in time? A land
trust for future generations. What lands should/should not be included in
such a trust? Is this a concept worth considering? Pros/cons? Any
thoughts on the matter from list members, MPRB candidates??

I suppose everyone is aware of what was on and in some cases is
still is buried on that landone of the old gas holders
(which is under a mound of dirt that kinda resembles
the rock of gibraltar) is uncomfortably close to some
residential housing just up the road from "the leaky cavern"
where the old library books are stored.

[Mpls] Park Board considering selling park land (BluffStreet-Gasworks)

2005-08-31 Thread Svattheriver
I have been following the issue of what should happen at the Bluff Street
Park and have talked to many folks who would like to see this site improved as
a natural area.
I have also spoken to Commissioners and staff about future plans for this
site.

Generally, It seems like there is a lack of respect for the good work that
has been done by residents, the Design center and volunteer consultants.
I have seen the plans, like them, and do not support the sale of this
property. With the potential of increased density in this area, it is even
more
important that this land be preserved as green space.
The bluff really enhances the river road and is important to the ecological
preservation of the one true gorge on the entire length of the Mississippi.

I hope at the Sept. 7 open time at the MPRB meeting that the Park Board will
welcome the efforts of those that have worked hard to plan for some modest
improvements to this valuable land and clarify future planning and planning
processes so that interested citizens are not shut out of the process.

Thanks,
Scott Vreeland Seward
