AW: Konami Micro@?!*@*?@

1999-05-19 Thread Coen van der Geest

Hi there,

Well Castlevania already had the problem of lack of ideas (this
3D-Castlevania is, well, let's guess... episode 11???).

I must say that Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (which is episode 6?)
is more close to Maze of Galious then to Vampire Killer, which is a bit
of fresh air in the platform scene. Maze of Galious is still one of the
best game concepts ever.

Ever played the Snes (famicom) version of Xak 1
It's very cool because the story, music and maps are the same

And the gfx are even better. (how is it possible??)

The only thing you need is a pentium, a snes emulator, and
the game ofcoz..
You can download the game from my page (chaos' music page):

Besides this you can also find other msx stuff on this page.

If that super-resolution, render and 3D moving WERE REALISTIC ENOUGH and

fun. IMO the videogames we see nowadays (specially in the PC side) are
little more than poorly finished overproduced aberrations.

Re: Konami Micro@?!*@*?@

1999-05-19 Thread radek

Disagree. If somebody devised MSX versions of the latest PC gfx engines
then it would be pretty possible to create such games on our beloved
 computer.

so who's gonna code the C++ compiler?

And trust me, not many major modifications to the design of the board would
 be necessary to acomplish this.

ahum you mean like giving your msx a 100Mzh front side bus or
someting minor like that... because else you would be using about 2% of
the cards potential...

And should those modifications be more
complicated, it wouldn't raise the price as much as the average geek
 couldn't afford.

Same conclusion as ever: PCs are used as plain power supplies for a jungle
 of boards.

Bullcrap!... the present generation graph boards cannot do polygon
transformations which leaves all the hard 48 bit floating point
calculations to the processor an MSX, however we all love it, woud
be rendered (virtually) useless against all the processing power needed
to show a decent 3D enviroment Then next gen boards however will
contain poly transform acceleration and thus could be used to beef up
the MSX!...

I suggest you investigat the material a bit more before you make
statements like that ...

Re: AW: Konami and Microsoft

1999-05-19 Thread radek

I agree, but I think Konami could have made wiser decision with an other
company. I think it's a far more better deal for Microsoft since most
modern PC games are too advanced for N64 or PSX (I don't know for DC)

nope, for Konami this means that the biggest installed client base is
going to play their games!! (there are far more PC's running Win9x than\
gamesconsoles) This must be the biggest deal Konami ever made! .. DC is
just like a standardized pc so it can handle pc-ports quite well and the
upcomming PSX2 is going to be a lot better than that (if the chips get
baked on time ;) so advanced graphics is no problem (within say half a
year or so)

and since Microsoft doesn't release games as regularly as Konami does,
M$ tends to get more money out of it with doing nothing but porting
 Konami games.

so you think Konami isn't getting any royaltees?... they would be stupid

And since the DC and PC games can easily be ported, you
can guess there will be a lot of DC games from Konami in the future.

Also, and this is much more interesting for M$: if the popular Konami
games are available on PC, people won't buy a console but a PC, which
means the console market will be made smaller (in extremis!) and the PC
market will grow, which means: more profit for M$ and their Windows.

i dunno. have you seen the specs on the PSX2? i think noone wil
buy a $4000 pc just to see that a $400 console can do better

 And
in the end there will be only one system: a PC. Micro$ofts device: "If
you can't beat them, join them".

wrong again mickysofts slogan has allways been 'If you cant beat
them,
BUY them' (...this comes from ex-M$ers)
and what you say about 'one system' is COMPLETELY TRUE!... this is a M$
strategy and if you think about it it makes sense only thing is of
course that micky wants to be on top of the piramid and that's a bad,sad
and disgusting idea (did i mention bad,sad and disgusting?... well it
doesn't hurt to say it again does it ;)

Because the kind of stuff your MSX will output thru your fl.400 card will
be at least 4 times better than the kind of garbage a PC would output thru
 a fl.100 brick.

Well... no.
A fl.50 SB16... yes. There should be a "Noise only" sticker on that. But for
100 bucks you can get a reasonable soundcard.

It's just that cheap because of mass-production and a large market.

Also, even the simplest one has advantages compared to the MoonSound. What
about DMA??? Or what about playing samples 64k (or 128k when 16-bit)??? I
can't do that on my MSX (shit shit shit). Okay, I can when using SIMPL...
But I would like to use my fl.400 MoonSound for that.

NB: I say BETTER, not more channels, bits or pixels. Don't try to compare
this fact with buying expensive gfx cards for the PC just to achieve
higher
polygon throughput -which of course doesn't imply more quality- than a
PSX.

I am not talking about channels not bits...

No way. Suicide means surrender. There are more radical and effective
  attitudes towards this phenomenon.

 Gnagnagna...

Will apply those attitudes on you as well.

Hello,

Yes, the idea is indeed insane. Why don't you use BDOS commands for
that?

LD C,$02F ; (Read Sector, C=$030 - Write Sector)
LD DE,SECTOR ; 1st sector
LD L,DRIVE ; (0=A, 1=B, etc.)
LD H,NUMSEC; Number of sectors to read
CALL BDOS ; ($0005 or $F37D if I remember it well)

Results: A = errorcode (A=0 - no error)

(I think you already knew this, but ok).

Ok, there are indeed routines within the firmware of the SCSI interfaces
to directly access the drive, and indeed... you can do a few more things
with those.
A tip: try to disassemble the various FDISK programs for the interfaces.
They can give you valuable information.

Btw: Address $4010 in the BIOS is equal to $0144 in the BIOS. If I
remember it well, it looks like this:

0144: JP addr

addr: RST #30
DB slot
DW $4010

(it's over 1.5 years since I actually used my MSX-Turbo R. it's
broken (FDD... yes, still broken)).

Ok, good luck...

You can access harddisk sectors inside a partition using #4010, just like
 floppies.

If you want to access sectors regardless of partitions (like the partition
table or master boot record), you'll need routines specific for the interface.

I think there was some info on this list when FAT16 was first discussed.
 Try to search the archives.
Info about the IDE interface can probably be provided by Jon (who also
 reads this list).

;)
All info about Sunrise's IDE can be found in the downloadsection of their
homepage: http://www.msx.ch
There is also an additional IDE section in Manuel's FAQ:
http://www.faq.msxnet.org

If you only want to read/write sectors within a partition, use the DISKIO
entry at #4010.

Cya,
jon

But why do you want direct access to a hard disk anyway? Only thing I can
think of is FDD emulation, in that case you can best use #4010.

fMSX V2.2 Beta 3 Amiga

1999-05-19 Thread TFH

fMSX Amiga v2.2 beta 3 has been released and can be downloaded from:
http://www.mep.msxnet.org

New features in this version are:

 - Added a semaphore in a rather critical place. This may fix some
   crashes, especially during reset.
 - Placed disk access routines in a separate task. This fixed a potential
   deadlock condition.
 - Fixed the bug that caused the crash when a HALT was executed while
   interrupts were disabled.
 - The text in the progress indicator bar is now visible for a longer
   time before disappearing.
 - Further refinements to the interrupt system. Psycho World runs now.
Also, the whole interrupt mechanism has become a lot faster.
 - Improved the palette handling to allow Psycho World to run correctly.
 - Greatly increased the speed of the palette handling when running on
a public screen. It might also pick better colors.
 - Removed the video refresh task. Its last few remaining duties are now
   performed by the timer task.

Kind regards,

Arnaud de Klerk / TFH/Fony

1999-05-19 Thread Ivan

HI! I know it's such an old question but I've been busy for some time. Don't read this
if someone has answered you before because it's just a simple view.

Using Set adjust combined with a normal 8 block scroll and two screens would result in
the desired smooth horizontal scroll. (that trick was proposed by MSX MEesXE
)
You can ask Nestor Soriano for more info. But I'll try to explain something.
Start with page 0 and set adjust set to the maximum right and scroll it to the set
adjust maximum left
then prepare page 1 8 positions scrolled to the right and change the pages with set
page. Do it again and restart!!!
