Maybe Takamichi wants to reply, 'cause I've sent 2 e-mails to him, talking
about Metal Gear 2, and I'm still waiting 4 an answer...

About this Emu-War... You know, I dislike MSX emulators, my feeling is
that there're people killing our little fellas... But it's only my opinion,
there are some good ways to use an emulator, and some people who gives them
nice use, but 90% of the guys who use emulators aren't nothing more than
emu-suckers. They don't even like MSX, they don't buy new software, they
don't want to develop, they don't even know what MSX is!

So, please, to the good sake of the MSX scene, please create a MSX
emulation mailing list in eGroups and free us from this horrible destiny,
of reading so many emulation-related mails.

Z380 is working!!!

1999-08-19 Thread Rafael Corrales Pulido

 Hello MSX world,

Two weeks ago Padial got the impossible, a Z380 based system board started
to work in a MSX slot, finally he solved all the hardware problems and the
Z380 board is totally finished except in the software part.

This was the first time that I could see the Z380 plugged in a simple MSX-2
Philips 8235, till now I only have seen the Z380 board with testers and a PC
computer, there was another similar test in a MSX, but the Z380 board was
flamed in a shortcircuit, but now it is running without problems.

It is preferable to see it in some pictures and information, you can read
this in a special report located in our WEB:

http://usuarios.meridian.es/replay

Now Padial wants to make a cheap 3D board for MSX, this is a good way to
test Phoenix platform, he wants collaboration from other hardware developers
to stablish a common work for new developments.

 PHOENIX:

It is great the www.egroups.com page, could anybody be the administrator of
the Phoenix mailing list??, the user who inform me about this site could be
the administrator, so if you can start the new egroup, do it please and
inform us as soon as you did it.

The V9938 contains an error there: reg#1, bit 5 is for the vertical retrace
interrupt (50/60Hz).

About FH (status reg 1, bit 0):
If the VDP scanning reaches the line specified in reg#19, the FH bit set.
If the IE1 (reg#0, bit4) is enabled, an interrupt is generated. So the
setting of FH does not require the line interrupt to be enabled.

I think most code that reads FH but doesn't use the interrupt, doesn't
enable the interrupt either.
To find out if an interrupt can be cancelled, the best way is to write a
test program.

For the ones who did not know yet: An utility like this also exists for
MSX-DOS, it's called LIST.COM, if I'm not mistaking (we used to have it but
after a HD-crash I lost it and never downloaded it again).

I made a tinie weenie little PC utility called MSXLIST.EXE which
will display MSX-basic files to the console.
Example: MSXLIST fudeba.bas >fudeba.asc will make an ASCII file.

As I do some developing for MSX on the PC, mostly for all the online
data and texts (much quicker to find information), I needed something to
look through basic files. SO... if anyone's interested, I will put it on my
homepage soon. First I will remove all runtime errors...

Usually I wouldn't post to such a thread,
but Konami Man said something that touched
deeply my heart... ^^ When I first was an
MSX-enthusiast, Apple users in Brazil were
already almost dead, so I didn't pay atten-
tion to them. And, PC-wise, anything better
than a 286 with a CGA board and a monochrome
monitor was luxury and extremely uncommon.
So, it was quite logical to think my MSX
was the best system in the world. But I
drooled when I first saw an Amiga. What
power! What graphics! What music! Soon I
realized I'd never have an Amiga, then that
worship turned into hatred. "Why having to
wait so much for a game to load? Why all
those games are crap? Why didn't those pro-
grammers put music in the game, or why does
it sound like an Atari 1600? Why do you
have to buy an 1MB expansion?" and such
were my thoughts. Later, despite my adora-
tion to the Super NES, I bought a dreaded
Mega Drive. I learned how to like a system
no matter how many bits, kilo or megabytes,
hard or floppy disks of any size, if it
runs Maze of Galious or not. Now I see it
is much better to like ALL systems, becau-
se you can get the best of them. :)

I must tell you my utmost interest in any
system is sound. I even remember Atari 1600's
Frogger BGMs, and some remarkable melodies
from ZX Spectrum! `:)

Today, I still think the easier system for
music is MSX. And it does offer one of the
wider assortments of sound options, and
despite the fact most musicians would care
first for sound quality, I still think the
best is to care for sound variety. ^^

Re: Emulation problems with status register#1

1999-08-19 Thread Laurens Holst

> My current problem with NLMSX:
>
> I am looking for more information about bit 0 of status register#1. (FH
bit)

This bit is set when the VDP arrives at the line specified in VDP register
19.
It is reset when it is read.

If the bit IE1 in register 0 is set then an interrupt will be generated if
the FH bit is set. The interrupt will keep being generated until the FH bit
becomes reset. You must see it as a copy from the FH bit on the
interrupt-input of the Z80. So:
1. the interrupt routine starts with a DI. If the interrupts are enabled
before the interrupt-routine RETurns (so not using the EI:RET combination at
the end) a new interrupt will be generated resulting in an infinite loop and
finally a stack overflow.
2. Unless status-register 1 is being read during the DI (interrupts
disabled -> Z80 doesn't acknowledge incoming interrupts).

If the IE1-bit is reset, then no interrupt will be generated, however you
can still poll the FH bit (used a lot, probably in SRM too).

> reg#1, bit 5, Horizontal scanning line, Interrupt Enable 0

Wrong, not "Horizontal scanning line". With this bit you can en- and disable
the normal interrupt (every 1/50th or 1/60th second when the VDP arrives at
line 212).

So it's got nothing (well almost nothing) to do with this issue.

Well, got it now??? If you get the basics then it's quite simple... Maybe
you should make a hardcopy (on paper) of Stefan Boer's VDP cursus or the
official v9938 (or 58) application manual... I think you are using some docs
not covering all (or covering things incorrectly).

If you need any more help on the VDP, feel free to mail me.

Emulation problems with status register#1

1999-08-19 Thread Frits Hilderink

Sorry about that message yesterday (title: 'Hoi Sean'), the dutch version was not
intended
for the mailinglist.

My current problem with NLMSX:

I am looking for more information about bit 0 of status register#1. (FH bit)

There are a number of demos/magazines that are using this bit to detect a line
interrupt
by just polling for it while the interrupts are disabled. And this happens even
when the interrupt it self is not switched on, the corresponding interrupt enable bit
is '0'.

I did manage to get those demos/magazines to work, but some of them don't work with the
same implementation. These demos/magazines are:
- Sunrise Special #1, #2, #3
- Sunrise Magazine #8

I would like to know how bit 0 of status register#1 works and specifically what
the conditions are for it to be set to '1'.

This specific bit also works together with register#19 (interrupt line register).
The following bits are also involved:

reg#0, bit 5, Interrupt Enable 2 (also used for lightpen)
reg#0, bit 4, Horizontal scanning line, Interrupt Enable 1
reg#1, bit 5, Horizontal scanning line, Interrupt Enable 0

If someone has more specific info then I could really use it and a lot of emulator
programmers could use it to, because these demos/magazines also 'hang' on
many other emulators.

Interrupt acknowledgement:

One thing that I do know is that if an interrupt is not acknowledged in time,
it will simply disappear. This is something that I still have to implement in
NLMSX.

This means that if bit 7 of status register#0 is read, while Z80 interrupts
are disabled (DI), that the 50/60hz interrupt from the VDP will not be executed.
Bit 7 will be set but the interrupt call itself will not be executed.

This probably is also the case for the line interrupt mechanism.

The people that wrote these demos/magazines must have known a lot of these
inner workings of the VDP that are really usefull to emulator programmers.

Oh, how funny. It seems myself seven or eight years ago, when I said

I must recognize that it was a funny age... but luckily I already grown.
I'm 25 already and I'll not enter in such discussions. If you think your

my MSX Turbo-Grande (big) X-) is also the best. But while we are
