I have 640kb, what makes you think I have something less? :)
It's just more economical to do 512kb songs (the wavekit is actually
only 320kb) so more people can enjoy it.

In fact I'm going to do a 128kb version too (lo-fi).

Hi,

I don't know. It has to be the composition that counts, so I don't know if
giving bonus points or something would be fair...

I think it would be best to find some experts who know how difficult
something is to be programmed (same for the music) and have their votes
count heavier than those of the visitors alone. Would be pretty sad if some
programmer programmed a very revolutionary routine inside his demo and there
would be nobody to notice it...

Hey Laurens,

>- Presentation. Several groups and users can show off new products
>(software

>configuration or so. Ofcourse it is useful to prepare a (short) speech.

You're talking about the marathon right now ? Speeching amidst the crowds of
a normal fair is somewhat impossible, but if you prepare some time and
attention, ofcourse we (Sargon) are willing to give a speech... Might be
some drastical changes within the Sargon-team, so we just might have some
news...

>- Music / Drawing competition. Should we give the composers priority access
>to the PCs, so they can rip samples from MOD-CDs or sample new ones etc???
>Who will be the jury??? A few selected ones or all people available?

I think ripping samples isn't needed. As most composers use their own
wavekits that contain every sample they should want to use, I guess MOD-CD's
aren't needed at all. I do think that you should allow every composer to use
his/her own wavekit... About the jury, that's a difficult one. The persons
who would probably fit best for jury sometimes also might be wanting to join
the contest themselves. Though ofcourse I'm not sure of that... By the way,
is it your intention that the music for this contest is composed DURING the
fair or is it also allowed to bring own compositions in advance ? If you ask
me, the first option is more fun for visitors... They can watch people
making music...

>I have no further ideas at the moment. As said: suggestions are welcome.

A game contest might be interesting. Thought you would've made up that one
by yourself, but just in case... Games like Puyo Puyo or F1-Spirit might do,
but it also might be interesting to organise some RPG-contest or so. If you
do so, the point is getting to some particular point in the game or
finishing it in as little time as possible.

>And ps, if you want to present something or have any new products, I'd like
>to know in advance, so we can put it on the MSX Fair homepage, publicize
>it,
>etc... That will probably attract more visitors...

We just might finally be able to release Defender 6, though I can't say that
for sure... We also would like to have some kind of auction, like Fony did
at the Tilburg-fair. Robert and I have some original Japanese MSX-stuff for
sale and Robert said the auction in Tilburg was fun. So we'd like to try
something like that in Bussum.

>Also, if you go to the Marathon: BRING YOUR COMPUTER!!! Without 24 hours
>might become a little long... Anyways, for sure is that it will be a lot
>more fun if you have your MSX with you... There will be plenty of tables

What exactly is the thing you expect from this marathon ? Is everybody just
busy with their own things on MSX or will the visitors be entertained ?

It is not a stupid excuse, I know many MSX guys of Spain who do not speak
english, I mean nothing, absolutely nothing...try to speak some spanish
phrases with some sense and maybe you will understand to Armando.

Perhaps some friend of him could translate it to english, but Armando has
not enough time to ask this. Why Armando or some spanish friends do not
speak english??, easy, in spanish schools you could choose between english
(nowadays always selected) or french, other languajes even.

 > Wasn't there a Spanish mailinglist or Newsgroup or so?

There is a brazilian ML, you can write there in spanish or portugues.

Another detail, I think it is not important to have a perfect english, the
spanish grammar, french grammar, italian grammar...are very different from
english one, my english is enough understable after years of hard learning,
mainly in the MSX world (Internet, friends, MSX fairs...), there are people
in Spain that know english, but they never practized it.

And what about some messages in dutch??...

Re: Who wants to help me write an C64 emul for MSX?..

1999-08-30 Thread Patriek Lesparre

>What about a Sega Mastersystem emulator? Hardware is not quite different
from MSX.

Actually, that's what makes it harder! Emulating a Z80 on a Z80 means you
can not keep any of the emulated Z80's registers in the MSX Z80! For my
6502 emulator I was able to keep the 3 registers, stack pointer, program
counter, and flags in Z80 registers.
Having to emulate a Z80 means you have to do a lot of stack-operations or
use slow memorylocations. Although you could keep the emulated Z80's normal
registers in the MSX's alternate registers and switch them during an
emulated EXX-instruction. That's not a bad idea now that I think about it. :)

When I have some spare time left (could be a while), I'll investigate the
Mastersystem hardware. Maybe a SG-1000 (early sega console) or SC-3000
(early sega computer) would be easier, they are VERY similar to MSX1 (same
VDP). Perhaps some sort of compiler could be programmed, maybe all that's
needed are some I/O-port changes...

>I think having an emulator of another system than MSX is not a loss of
time, because it would enable us to use even more software on our beloved
system.

I agree with you. Even if it was terribly slow, it would still be way cool! :)

I don't have a Moonsound, I don't know how to access it (what

Hmmm... Nice...
Would like to know more about that (anyone???)...

By the way, I am working on a 4-directional smooth-scrolling RPG engine...
Not much progress though (I'm lazy) (official excuse: spend too much time on

But it works nice. And I have made up a solution for the VDP r#18 vs.

Why should you do that? You can as well display the text as graphics.
Advantages of that: 1. no hassle with screensplits, 2. you can add nice
colors to the text, 3. You can make the text appear in a nice-looking way...
Lots of nice effects possible, like fading every letter into screen (put
first letter on screen, color=(1,1,1) ::: put second letter on screen,
color=(1,1,1), make first letter color=(2,2,2) ::: etc. etc. etc.) or let
them appear in a way like the program below demonstrates:

(load a picture on page 1).
SCREEN 5
FOR I=0 to 32+7
FOR J=0 to 7
A=I*8-(J*7)
IF A=>0 THEN A<=255 THEN COPY (A,0)-(A,211),1 TO (A,0),0
NEXT
NEXT

Ofcourse this doesn't really work well (it is programmed without computer!),
but you get the idea.
(maybe it will look better if you insert a wait loop between the two NEXTs).
(or even better: a wait based on the timer!)

QBASIC version:
(little adapted: don't know how to do a copy, nor how to use 'invisible
pages', nor how to load an image, so I used a white line. However, with
timer wait -equal to 50Hz-, because QBASIC is fast enough for that)

SCREEN 13:T=0
FOR I=0 to 40+7
Lus: IF TIMER<(T+0.02) GOTO Lus
T=TIMER
FOR J=0 to 7
A=I*8-(J*7)
IF A=>0 THEN A<=320 THEN LINE (A,0)-(A,239),15 'change to 4 for nice red.
NEXT
NEXT

Why a QBASIC version? Well my MSX is 2 floors upstairs and I had to try out
if it worked...

I already did. No reply (as expected). Wouldn't know how they had to do that
either (since they don't log any IPs etc. and since this IP will highly
likely change everytime).
Also, they get a lot of these mails... What do you think people use
anonymous mailers for?

I indeed think closing this list for non-members will be the best solution.
Or a moderator... I wouldn't mind to (read the list everyday anyways) (would
be fun, moderating my own messages) (is needed sometimes, don't you think?)

Anyways, all replies were "valid" so far... to clear up the issue about the
adress...
No "you say I am a lamer? You are a lamer yourself!"-alike messages (yet).

??? No no not at all.
Loading from HD isn't slow, you can keep up with the audio stream I think.
The only problem when using a device like SiMPL is that you can't continue
playing when loading (however using a sampleunit you can), and using the
MusicModule you'll have to convert from PCM to ADPCM, which takes a lot of
time (however, this can be done in advance to memory or to a file, however
you then need more RAM or HD space).

I think a decent .WAV player would be very nice.

Indeed. I also have a 1GB harddisk now, and I'd like to run EVERYTHING under
DOS2. But some things really don't work, even with MAP or MAP2 they won't run.
Examples are the cracks I have of Hole in One, Ninja Kage, Ninja 2 and some
other old MSX1 games. Most MegaROMS I have do run, but exceptions are e.g.
Ashguine 1 and 2, Hydlide 3 MSX2 version and Martos' Space Manbow crack (which
loads during the game, in some incompatible way, seemingly)... Would be nice
if the latter worked: you hardly could notice the loading.

Well, it would be nice if a new version would be made that would indeed ALWAYS
work. As said: MAP.COM (or MAPPER.COM) doesn't work always.

What about a Sega Mastersystem emulator? Hardware is not quite different from MSX.

I think having an emulator of another system than MSX is not a loss of time, because
it would enable us to use even more software on our beloved system.

This is very, very sad. That's going personal,

They are. Actually they are our parents. I don't live there any more
but Pepijn does.I don't know where this Squirrel/Aapje person got
this adress, or even who he or she is, but I'm 100% certain that my
parents have nothing to do with it. And as far as I know there are
no C64's in the house.

So, I'd ask everyone to just forget about this address. Aapje
probably wanted to tease Pepijn with it.

And if the address was seriously meant as a contact adress, for
instance by Pepijn trying to infiltrate in FAM, then I can only say
this: Sorry to blow your cover, Pepijn, but it was a stupid move
anyway, everyone was half way finding out already and mom and
dad don't deserve the mess it would have caused.

But I don't think my brother would be that stupid...

No Subject

1999-08-30 Thread Peter Burkhard

Ad a):

The GFX9000 can only be checked by reading/writing some of the registers
of the V9990 via IN/OUT ports. There's no specific ID register available
(as opposed to the V9938/58 both of which have an ID), but you could use
any readable + writable register.

For example: write &HA5 to R#0 (port &H60) and then read R#0 again. If
the read value is &HA5 the V9990 is present.

The drawback of this is that any device that has a readable + writable
register at port &H60 will be recognized as V9990. So it might be better
to use a V9990 specific register, like its status register. For example:

10 OUT &H67,1: ' (release software reset and use overscan mode: MCS=1)
20 A=INP (&H65): ' read V9990 status register
30 A=A AND &H04: ' only read MCS bit (Master Clock Select)
40 IF A<>4 THEN 100: ' MCS=0? Then no V9990 present
50 OUT &H67,0: ' (use non-overscan mode: MCS=0)
60 A=INP (&H65)
70 A=A AND &H04
80 IF A<>0 THEN 100: ' MCS=1? Then no V9990 present
90 PRINT "V9990 found": END
100 PRINT "V9990 not found": END

Another option is to use the V9990 interrupt system (e.g. its line
interrupt). If the interrupt doens't occur within a specific time, the
V9990 is not present.

The interrupt system is the safest way of detection, as the chance is
very very small that some other device has an identical interrupt
system. But I think that the MCS test should be sufficient.

But again, this is not a 'standard' or something. The V9990 has no
standard option for detection.

Ad b):

Very difficult. The Video9000 doesn't have any registers, except for one
at port &H6F. However, this is only a writable register. Reading port
&H6F will always return &HFF.

Because a Video9000 without its RGB input connected to some video source
acts exactly like a GFX9000, the Video9000 can't be detected at all when
the RGB input isn't connected. A non-present video signal overrules the
register &H6F settings completely and the Video9000 can't be accessed in
fact.

Only if the RGB input cable is connected to the MSX computer, the
Video9000 can be detected in a few, rather difficult ways. I only give
the ideas:

One could set the V9938/58 at 60Hz and the V9990 at 50Hz. Then you wait
for a V9990 frame-interrupt (which occurs at the end of each frame
cycle). If this interrupt doesn't occur within 1/50 of a second, the
Video9000 is present, because the V9938/58 is resetting the V9990 frame
cycle, before it has reached the end, and so no interrupt occurs. If an
interrupt is noticed, the Video9000 isn't present.

Another possibility is to make the V9938/58 screen some colour (not
black or white) and digitize this for a short moment (a few screen lines
is sufficient). Then, read the contents of the V9990 VRAM and see if
indeed the V9938/58 colour has been digitized.

I prefer the interrupt type of detection. It's easier to realize and can
be performed with both the V9938/58 and the V9990 screen display
switched off.

Again, this only works if the RGB input connector (SCART or DIN) is
connected to the RGB output of the computer. Detection without the RGB
cable connected to the MSX is not possible.

Ad c):

The official way is to read the OPL4 wavetable register 2. Bits 5-7
contains the OPL4 identification. See OPL4 manual page 14 for more
information.

Nevertheless, Moonblaster for Moonsound doesn't use this option, and
just writes a value to some readable + writable register, recalls this
value and compares it with the original written value. However, this can
be cheated by a device that as a readable + writable register located at
the same port number. Moonblaster is not detecting as it should be.

Using the OPL4 ID is preferred.

Ad d):

The Sunrise IDE interface can be detected by reading the Flash-ROM.
There should be some ID in the Bios. Ask Jon for more information or
perhaps it's mentioned in the IDEtech.txt file.

The other harddisk interfaces I don't know enough about them. So I don't
know. For the BERT interface ask Hans Oranje, for the Novaxis ask Henrik
Gilvad.

Ad e):

I don't know anything about ESE-RAM, so I'm not able to answer the
question for this device.

Koen

It seems a good idea.

All of them, except Cozumel. "Aventura Espacial" and the two sequels of
Cozumel are incoherent, but Cozumel itself is great.
