You need software to do the actual speech, but you are correct you can use
the covox interface to make it hearable.

No, the Covox interface or 'Covox Speech Thing' (IIRC) is just a D/A
converter. Kind of like SIMPL.
Ofcourse with the right software it can create speech, but so can the PSG
or almost any other soundchip.

FYI, SIMPL is a 100% covox interface

More memory in Panasonic MSX2+

2000-12-17 Thread Ivan Latorre

Hello

I was wondering if it´s possible to expand internally
the RAM of Panasonic MSX2+ computers (they only have 64 KB).

If it is possible; does anyone have the schematics?

Many thanks

Simplest way to check RAM size

2000-12-17 Thread Takamichi Suzukawa
I was trying to write some article on Captain Multi Station MSX2.
I wanted to know whether the RAM size is 64KB or 128KB, since before 1987,
Japanese MSX2s with 128KB were also being released.
However, CMS isn't equipped with disk drive. So I must type something by
myself to check RAM size.
Does anyone know simplest of simple methods to know RAM size?

And on a similar note, does anyone know how the extra RAM of the Yamaha

A simple but inaccurate method is this:
PRINT (256-INP(HFF))*16

It relies on the fact that in page 3 mapper page 0 is selected and most
mappers return unused bits as 1. It is inaccurate because it won't work on
mappers that don't return all bits (like turbo R's) and because when there is
more than one mapper in the system, it shows the size of the largest one.

Maarten

If you type:

OUT (255),4

And the machine does NOT crash, it has 64kb. If it did crash, it has more. Try:

OUT (255),8

If that didn't crash the machine, it has 128kb.

Another possibility is that the machine doesn't have mappers, in which case it
has 64kb ram. Try:

OUT (255),1

If that didn't crash it, it has 64kb unmapped RAM.

Yamaha CX5M

2000-12-17 Thread Richard Atkinson

Does anyone know the ports used by the FM sound synthesizer SFG-01 in the
Yamaha CX5M computer? There should be two ports for the YM2151 OPM chip
and more for the YM2148 MIDI and keyboard interface. I haven't found any
documentation on the YM2148 at all, although I have the YM2151 datasheet.

Well to be honest I don't have a clue about this -- but is there a change you
could dump the roms? If we have the roms, someone could try to figure it
