[MSX] Einde Oefening voor MSX-NBNO

2005-06-12 Thread Maico Arts

Hallo Allemaal,

The BERT scsi interface is known for this problem too:
I have several diskinterfaces and especially when connecting more than one
to the MSX you can get this kind of trouble. The BERT interface must be the
first one to use. With the exception of the internal diskinterface for the
floppydrive of my TurboR GT.

Most of the time you have to be carefull with the use of the driveletters...

My test showed me that a 16mb lexar CF card did not work when it was the
only installed cf card. When using this card as a second card, it worked
like a charm.

That is what I was telling.
The code executed will probably be the bootsector of the card, which
contains pc-code. Same problem occurs when booting from a diskette which was
formatted on a pc.

Re: [MSX] IDE-CF: "No enough memory"

If memory serves well, you should press DEL or some key to bypass CF bootup
and boot normally from diskette. With the fdisk you should do the
partitioning and then all should work normally.

Re: [MSX] IDE and Novaxis SCSI?

2004-01-30 Thread Maico Arts
Hallo Hapzee

> Does anybody know how I can use both ATA IDE with CF adapter and Novaxis
SCSI at the same time? (in slotexpander)

If you use them both in the slotexpander, leave one slot open between these
to (or put something else in it)
I have the best results when using the ide cartridge first.

It is possible to use different harddisk cartridges the same time:
Bert scsi
sunrise IDE
Novaxis SCSI
Megascsi

I use a gouda slot expander or an old MK/DKC slotexpander with external
powersuply on a MSX TurboR GT
The megascsi is in a cartridge in the computer, the others in the slot
expander.

I use the Bert scsi for a extra density floppydiskdrive (2,88 mb per
diskette). This cartridge must be the first one because it simply doesn't
work if it is not. It is the only device on the Bert, because the Bert has
slow data transferrates. But then again, the Bert is the only interface who
uses the floppy drive as a floppydrive. All other interfae do see the
floppydrive and can use it, but you have to partition every disk with the
according fdisk and then you cannot use it anymore on a normal msx diskdrive
or even a pc...

Second cartridge is the sunrise ide. With the fdisk utility you disable
partitions, but enable at least one so it uses only this one driveletter at
startup of the msx computer. With the "par" command you can switch
partitions, so you can use all partitions on every harddisk connected to
this cartridge.

Third I use Gouda/Novaxis SCSI with rom version 1.59 you can boot from
zipdisk and to be able to use it together with Bert you need a gouda which
uses another set of io-ports then the standard version!

Depending on the harddrive size it uses maximum 6 driveletters. By setting
multiple harddrives to "no" you see one drive at startup, but with the "map"
command you can still access all partitions on all drives.

If megascsi is willing to work in a slot expander then it is better to use
it as third harddisk-interface instead of fourth. On megascsi you tell which
scsi-id is using which driveletter. You have to assign one harddisk to at
least one drive letter if you wat to use it. When changing the drives, you
have to reset the computer. megascsi remembers which partitions you have
used last. Can be very nice, but also very annoying.

When using so many diskinterfaces with harddiskdrives the internal floppy
cannot be used anymore, but then again, I have a 2.88 floppy drive as first
drive...

Sometimes it can be a pain to get this kind of thins to work. Try connecting
both cartridges to the primary slots instead of a slotexpander. When using
some cartridges together I also have problems using these cartridges

I hope you can do anything with this info.
succes with your equipement.

Hello

Sunrise themselves have used an IBM microdrive when attending the Tilburg
MSX fair.

> With Fat 16 you can go until 2Gb=2000Mb the same than a IDE Hard Disk.

Not quite true.
First you need at least one partition which is fat 12, from where you will
boot and load the fat 16 driver. Might be another harddisk of cf-card though
which contains this fat 12 partition.

Second, you can make 32 partitions. so when using fat 12, you can use up to
1 GB maximum. When using fat16 you can use up to 64 GB, but I think that is
a little bit to much to use... As a matter of fact I do not think it is wise
to use that kind of harddisks on an MSX...

Was it driva A:? when not, you could have tried to copy msxdos2.sys and
command2.com to the a:-drive.

Fdisk is a real harddisk killer... I know, I have also made mistakes with
fdisk...
I forgot to use the right scsi-id as the option for fdisk. When low-level
formatting the harddisk I lost all my data and the harddisk which needed the
low-level formatting still did not function properly...

It is indeed very important to get the scsi-id and the termination right.
although, I can tell you stories about very weird incorrect configurations
that did work and the theoretically correct configuration did not work...

Indeed
When clock chip info is gone, then novaxis tries to read it, it indeed gets
often id 4
Novaxis is indeed the interface you could tell with fdisk which scsi-id was
able to read-write to a partition.

Bert scsi-interface however was able to tell which scsi-id can read write on
which partiton, any partition. More computers can write to the same
partition. And it had a dos utility called rights.com to change those rights
temporary and or permanent.

> It might be that this was indeed the novaxis interface and that the ID(s?)

I beleive that depends how the bits ware fallen when turning on the msx
computer. Sometimes another cartridge can overwrite this same clockchip info
to save its own settings.
Bert scsi-interface also does save info in the clock chip.

> So, it might very well be that the solution is: replace the battery for
the

Replacing the battery might be usefull if the problem already occurs when
turning the msx computer off and on and the settings are allready gone.

As far as I know it is not possible. You have to set it with the fdisk
program. And at the end initialize the partitions. Thus all data is
destroyed...

What size is the harddisk anyway? Which fdisk is being used last time?
What might do the trick is initializing one partition at a time. The old
fdisk could do this, but was only capable of making maximum 6 partitions and
giving these access rights.
You could then copy one partition to another, clear the partition with fdisk
and ofcourse make it again with access right for host-id 7.

And: why bother to change the access rights. You know now that you have to
use host-id 6 to be able to use this harddisk.

you could try to use only disk1 to start with.
If that does function, than you could try to concat on a computer without
fat16 driver loaded (or using a fat12 partition on your harddisk and
ofcourse the fat16 driver not loaded.)

Not every program or game can be run with start.com.

The game Illusion City can be played with music through midi, it uses the
midi-ports of the MSX Turbo-R.

Erik Maas has once writen a small programm which accepts midi-data through
the Music Module and plays it on the Moonsound. So your MSX is turned into a
midi-module like a roland sc-55 or mt-32...

There were 6 computers connected to each other.
And Triplex does work on MSX1 but not correctly! The lower lines cannot be

Hello

You have to twist pin 10 and 12 on the 34-pin floppy connector to change
driveselect signals.
You can (as Maarten already said) put a jumper over pin 33 and 34 on the
motherboard of de computer and connect the flatcable on the other
motherboard connector. You also have to disconnect pin 34 somewhere in the
flatcable

RE: SCART to composite

I think you scart to composite cable only uses the composite signals which
are also in the scart available... So the RGB signals do not reach the
monitor. With this cable you have do you have a proper image on the monitor
or not?

open up the scart connector (if possible) and you will see just some wires.

I welll that's not so true. after termination the bus is not completly
closed so that no signaals can get true.
Its is only a little bit weaker.like:in between a interface and HD(1) is
like 2 meters of cabel.
And HD1 is terminated.is hd(2) within 0.5 it's not a probleem. if it is
longer than it's a probleem.

Mine theory is that the scsi bios (eproms) in the unit's are different.
i have make't an order by hans oranje (http://www.hansoranje.demon.nl) for a
new slot expander and a new scsi interface.
so if i get a new BERT scsi interface the first thing a am going to do is
copy the eprom :-) en test it in mine
MK scsi interface.because i am maxout at 4x32MB and can't use any other
fdisk then Fdisk 1-1.

Hello People

Has anybody seen any recent number of XSW Magazine yet?

Well I haven't. It is because the lack of writers.
Mari has send a cry for help to the mailing lists several times and he never
got any results.
People keep shouting I will write, but we are still waiting...

What I am curious about is if people are interested innreceiving something
like XSw Magazine. I have heard just 1 question from somebody quite close to

Modern QIC tapedrives, like HP colorado 5gb are IDE devices. But then again,

Use diskview.
With this program you can make the directory-entry empty, as if it was never
there.
Then run chkdsk. It should find some lost clusters. You can remove these.

If you can make a serial connection to lets say a pc, through a nul-modem
cable, then it wil also be able to connect using modems.
But you need to know what the other side of the telephoneline uses (like
8n1)

 > > 2. How to configure the modem (ATwxyz, etc)
>

ATZ is not used to configure your modem. It is used to reset the modem to
its (factory-)default configuration...
If your modem is configured properly, then ATZ is sufficient to get yor
modem up and running...

> send init string:

almost correct, see above
An init string is depending on the modem you use...
Your connection has to be able to let the user configure it with a dial
string, reset string and an init string. These are mostly used.
As far as I remember correctly...

Also possible!
I used rewritable because I know for sure that these CD's I now have do need
a lot of cleanup...A lot of stuff is spread on two cd's. I clean up the
files on pc and then write a new cd. Bij using a rewritable I can use the

Hello

That is possible, but you have to make a new cable between
motherboard and diskdrive (see the MSX FAQ tosee how) and you have to
make a new eprom for the diskrom (use the one from the 8245) since
the 8235 is not able to use the diskdrive double sided. So it can use
this double density drive.

You are right, that is possible, but it depends on which interface is
detected first, in what sequence the MSX does find his disk-roms...

it is possible to use a BERT-, Gouda(HG)- and a MEGA-SCSI interface
together in one computer at the same time. I did this on my Turbo-R

Use a scsi-zipdrive... But I am not sure if the HSH can boot

use ID 5 or 6.

I use a scsi zipdrive with my megascsi and with novaxis

There is only one person who has a Bert version 3.0, Rinus

I think he will be the onlyone using it, since I don't hear

you are right about both. ASbout novaxis: I bought my Bert
interfaces when they just came available, and also with
novaxis, so no problem here. I also got my megascsi when
these japanese guys were at tilburg, for a couple of years.

You can order it in Japan, but as you already said, it is

It is still based on the same controler: I have 3 gouda's, 2

problems). Mari van den Broek has (or had) a HSH with no
problemes at all.

I asume you mean: if the harddisk doesn't need to much
power. But why connect the harddisk inside the computer?
Then your dos2 and scsi controller should be inside too! And
that is not going to be easy.

>> Is DOS2 built in in one of these interfaces?
>In HSH, no. In Gouda, yes in MK, yes but not all of them.

In the Gouda there is no DOS2 present!!
these are able to use the dos2 build in the computer,
regardless in which sub-slot DOS2 is placed. if you have a
hsh, then dos2 must be in a lower slot then the
hsh-cartridge itself. This also counts for the older
mak/green interfaces. The gouda uses in Turbo-R the build in
dos2, for MSX2 it should do either, but I am not sure (lets
try at the fair)

>> If so, does it give a problem since I already have DOS2
built in my MSX?

the first one will be used (in a lower slot)
