Do we understand why Moin was chosen in the first place above MediaWiki?

I am concerned that to do a migration while the data is in a bad state
may detract from fixing the existing poor content, swallowing time with
format and navigation fixes and template conversion and such. However, I
realise that to fix the content and then migrate later would likely
require rework/reformatting of the same pages. A judgement on which
strategy makes most sense is I guess up to Rob.

I agree. I think that if we wait for Mediawiki migration to fix/improve
the current documentation,
it may stop the current elan.

A better plan IMO would be to achieve the MoinMoin migration to 1.6,
since I think there is not so much work left.
I'm going to contact dmppanda others, and put effort to make this happen.

This will let us the time to evaluate in parallel the work needed for
the MediaWiki migration.

If MediaWiki can be used for transclusion, I'm all for the switch.

Transclusion can probably be achieved with MediaWiki as well:
it supports extensions, and here's one allowing to export a wiki page as
PDF: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Pdf_Export,
which may be similar to what we want (get a different view of the wiki
page).

I've tried to import the current wiki to MediaWiki using a little bit
modified version of http://git.catalyst.net.nz/gw/moin2media.git and the
result doesn't look that bad. It can translate MoinMoin syntax to
MediaWiki (well, it's not always 100% but I think it can be tweaked for
the special cases in your wiki), import full history, attachments, split
CamelCaseWikiNames, convert FooDiscussion pages to Foo talk pages. What
doesn't work are cards, and it's confused by using non-category pages at
the bottom section of a page. And pages from CategoryUser would probably
need to be converted to User:PageName.

Looks really interesting. I didn't found such advanced migration tool
last year during my investigations.
So, if we really want to migrate to MediaWiki, I'd sugges to not upgrade
to MoinMoin 1.6, but go straight to MediaWiki.

My idea was to migrate to a more recent MoinMoin, since it would have
helped the migration to MediaWiki (with the supposition that migration
tools doesn't support old MoinMoin syntax).
But since the tool you've found seems to work with MoinMoin 1.3, I agree
with you.

Do you want to load the results onto scooby so everyone can play with
the results? I can have DW add a new DNS entry for it
