Anyone know if there are any problems with doing this? Thanks again everybody. Paul -- Paul Walton * Powered by * Cambridge* Debian GNU Linux * U.K. * http://www.debian.org *

Please can anybody point me in the right direction? It's probably a permission problem. What are the permissions on /var/spool/mail and the mailbox file in there? Also, I don't remember in which version but some time ago I think Mutt switched to the suid dotlock program, thus avoiding the need to have the actual Mutt binary to be suid root. Maybe this is the problem here..? In any case, I think it very likely that for some reason your Japanese- enabled Mutt doesn't have the permission to modify your mailbox file, for whatever reason. Either it needs to be suid root (or sugroup mail), or the dotlock helper app is not longer suid root, or something like that. Hope this helps, Mikko -- // Mikko Hänninen, aka. Thanks for the help Mikko.Permissions were as follows; drwxrwsr-x 2 root mail 1024 Oct 23 12:16 mail -rw-rw 1 paul mail 422603 Oct 23 12:16 /var/spool/mail/paul All I had to do was add myself to the group"mail" and it seems to work fine. DOH! (Now to try and get it to read Japanese) Paul -- Paul Walton * Powered by * Cambridge* Debian GNU Linux * U.K. * http://www.debian.org *

Now any user in the group mail could read and write to this mailbox and i guess only user paul is supposed do so. That's a normal setup. mail is not a user group. Any users should not belong to that group normally, only setgid programs which then get access to read/write files in the mail spool dir. Of course, YMMV, but there's nothing unusual about those permissions themselves. Mikko -- // Mikko Hänninen, aka.
