Yes. The Exchange IMAP server doesn't suck too badly, and mutt will
work fine with it. If your exchange server doesn't have IMAP
enabled, then you may be able to use the davmail gateway
http://davmail.sourceforge.net/

I'm connecting to Exchange (Office 365) with mutt via IMAP.

Mutt keeps losing its connection every time Microsoft shuffles virtual
mail servers around.

Is there a better way?

I do use mutt with Exchange (owa365), but this server supports IMAPS; I
I think Exchange 2010 can be configured as well for IMAP(S) support. If
not you could check FetchExc from

Yes, with...IMAP. But the folks running Exchange have to enable that.

Mutt and Exchange

2014-09-09 Thread John Niendorf

Hello Mutters,

I'm using Mutt to access my personal IMAP account, but was wondering if
there is a way to use Mutt to connect to my work Exchange 2010 account?

I'm using Thunderbird that has an add-on that allows T-bird to connect to
Exchange using the Outlook Web Access settings.

Has anyone ever connected to Exchange with Mutt?

No, I can access my Exchange 5.5 GAL via a LDAP lookup from Outlook Express.
No AD involved; this is NT 4.

The Active Directory flavour, right? As far as I understand, A. D. has
an incompatible auth method, and thus cannot be accessed by "normal"
LDAP tools

That's why I hacked a quick Python script to access A. D. via M$'s ADSI
COM interface. This is about semi-working for me.

The real "fun" is my IMAP filtering on the Exchange server by
downloading everything, running it through my filters (custom Python
ones and spamassassin), then putting it back in the right folders. I've
heard that's what IMAP's for.

Hello,

You can use the mutt external query function together with the "Little
Brother Database" to query an LDAP server.

I have the following entry within my .muttrc:

set query_command="lbdbq %s"

You can download lbdb at:

anything that reads LDAP can read it off of Exchange that way. Not so for

Absolutely you will. Thus, the rest of this mail is a bit "Off-Topic"
for this list.

> Is there a HOWTO somewhere (Google did not find anything useful for

Mutt would have nothing to do with this... So your search probably
wouldn't be that useful... Furthermore, I don't know of a way (outside
of maybe Ximian's "Exchange Connector" program) to interface with
Exchange address books from non-M$ platforms. If you have an LDAP
server at your office, you might want to try a google search for "mutt
LDAP". This seems to be a more logical choice (And returned a couple
interesting hits when I ran it).

But there is nothing in mutt (other than it's ability to read data from
external programs), that can interface with an Exchange server.

the GAL (Global Address List) via LDAP, but not personal address books.

Good question. Dunno how mutt integrates with LDAP, but I know I have used
Outlook Express to query a GAL via LDAP. If you need to configure a
firewall or anything, LDAP access is port 389, I believe.

My problem was that I had a folder-hook that pushed and mucked up my

What if you

  mutt -f /dev/null

  c imap://username@server/

to avoid any pushing or other hook nonsense? If that works, then you can
track down what your muttrc is doing and either kill it or make sure it

I have this in my .muttrc:

set imap_user=username
set imap_pass=password

This works just fine for me connecting to Exchange 5.5 IMAP, no domain
information is necessary. Also, I didn't happen to notice what version of Mutt
you are using. The 1.2 branch has really bad IMAP support. You might want to
try the 1.3 or 1.4 branches if you aren't using them already.

Try adding the domain to the username

domainname\username

(note backslash)

This allows you to authenticate to the MS domain, to login.
