I believe the patch requires an actual nntp server to connect to, not a static database like the one generated by slrnpull. Corrections warmly solicited :-) I've gotten vvv.nntp working with leafnode, and I must say it's *slick as hell* -- it's exactly what I was looking for. This is the first time I've needed to use the patch program. I think, for vvv.nntp, I must turn the top of the textfile into a little script, then patch, then ./configure, then make, and make install. But I don't know the flags to use with patch, or where I should run the patch, with respect to the mutt directory I want to modify. -- William GUynes

But it works with Leafnode and Leafnode+ (allthough I don't suggest using Leafnode+ with Mutt). vvv.nntp and local spools
Can the vvv.nntp package be used with a local spool, à la slrn/slrnpull? I just patched 1.3.25i with it, and it's great, but it would be better without the slow Internet article checking, etc. Also, is there a more appropriate forum for this question? It seems strange that so much work should be put into a patch without there being any support resources devoted to it...
