Re: InnoDB Performance

2005-04-18 Thread David Lloyd

Eko and all,

The MyIsam storage engine is a non transactional engine and InnoDb is
a transactional engine. That is the main difference. So I think the
 MyIsam engine should be faster.

However, some file systems that have journals are faster than non
journalling file system. It's not always that clear cut. I've just
switched a number of big customer databases to InnoDB and noone's
noticed any difference - if anything it's going faster.

Can anyone recommend this book? Or, if not, what book can you
 recommend for a newbie.

I always recommend Paul Dubois' New Riders Book:

Paul's probably lurking on the list. I bought the 1999 edition and I

MySQL Replication

2005-04-03 Thread David Lloyd
Hi There,
I have a replication setup on my local network (so any updates can be
transported at around ethernet speed).

Here's the behaviour I see:
* MySQL Master
- I do a whole slew of drop table and create tables
* MySQL Slave
- It doesn't pick them up
... until ...
- I restart the slave
It doesn't appear to have a problem with a single database table being
dropped, only when I drop a whole heap at once [I'm replacing the
underlying scheme with a heap of drop table ifs followed by create table].

I'm running the official mysql-4.1.10 Apple binaries. One on my OS X
server [which is the master] and another on OS X [not server] [which is
the slave].

Anywhere I can work out what might be happening or why the updates are
being sent through?

Re: Setting up an organization's member database

2005-03-20 Thread David Lloyd

Fafa,

I am running this non-profit organization working together with
various charity organizations across the world.

We would like to setup an efficient member database using MySQL
rather than having some ugly formatted MS Word document listing
 them.

What would be the purest and cleanest way of setting one up,
and maintaining it? It should support all personal biodata fields,
arranged under individual, organizational, corporate and honorary
 memberships.

I hope anybody has been in the same situation as me.

Look for a project at http://freshmeat.net/ - there's a few of them
around (go searching - eg. member database or some such thing).

Re: Grant Tables problem (I think)

2005-03-20 Thread David Lloyd

Hi,

I have a problem connecting to the mysql server. I installed a new
server with mysql 4.1.9, apache2, php4 on freebsd5.3 and have some
websites running on it using the mysql server. Last friday I had a
crash of one off my other servers and I copied the websites and db's
to this new server. (old server was mysql 3). After that the mysql
server didn't startup anymore. I then chown'ed the data dir to
mysql:mysql. After that I was able to start the server with
--skip-grant-tables . But it didn't start with out the
--skip-grant-tables option. So I found out to use mysql_install_db
to create new grant tables. After that the server starts with and
without --skip-grant-tables. But only with the --skip-grant-tables
option, websites can connect to the databases. I can't find any real
errors in the logs and I can't find anything on the web or forum. I
run mysql_fix_privilege_tables and installed a root passwd. Hopefully
somebody can help me on this.

I wonder if putting:

[mysql]
old-passwords

...in your my.cnf (I always use /etc/my.cnf because trying to guess
where the 'real' data directory is, is painful).

James,

We had a strange instance happen here with one of our MySQL servers.
We have multiple MySQL installations, and one of the MySQL servers had a

Basically, when we ran a select now(); MySQL reported time that was two
hours ahead of the actual time. The system /bin/date command was correct
 however.

Programming APIs for MySQL

2002-11-10 Thread David Lloyd

I know that there are binding that allow one to speak SQL to MySQL for:

* PHP
* Perl
* Java

...there must be more, all with their own idiosyncrancies, strong points
and weaknesses. Rather than having a holy war about which binding is
better (I prefer Perl but I certainly use PHP when it's appropriate), why
don't we talk about which bindings exist and their features...

And then we may be able to present some useful, constructive information
to the world.

Re: Mysql Innodb performance slow

2002-10-26 Thread David Lloyd

Mark,

Note that mysql does not support bind variables. If you think
you'reusing them, whatever API you are using is filling them in
beforesending the statement to mysql. Bind variables do solve
quotingproblems, though, so if you use them, know why you're using
 them :)

Rumour has it, though, that DBD::MySQL (or whichever module it is)
performs better with the bound variable versions than the non bound
variable versions.

Adam,

Obviously MySQL would have advantages if I intended to use it as a server
database with concurrent users. But is it faster than Access in the
single-user environment, when dealing with large databases?

MySQL in a single user environment is a pain in the arse because of its
lack of an Access Like front end that is actually useful and featureful
(Access is crap, but it's a better database frontend than currently
exists).

That's a Perl error.

You've told Perl not to allow you to use a variable unless you declare
it with:

my
local
our
(and possibly other keywords but these are the most common)

If you substitute:

my $drh=

...then you'll be fine.

You might want to find out more information on what the use strict
actually does too. A good place would be the perl documentation
(perldoc) or http://www.perl.org/

Hope this helps.

Specify the fields you want in your query.

I think you miss the point of the question. What if you have table with
50 fields and you just don't want field 45, 46 and 48? It would be much
easier to use an except clause here rather than have to specify 47
fields...

InnoDB Question

2002-09-04 Thread David Lloyd

Hi There,

(mysql, query)

From the online manual I see:

--
innodb_data_file_path
Paths to individual data files and their sizes. The full directory path
to each data file is acquired by concatenating innodb_data_home_dir to
the paths specified here. The file sizes are specified in megabytes,
hence the 'M' after the size specification above. Do not set a file size
bigger than 4000M, and on most operating systems not bigger than 2000M.
InnoDB also understands the abbreviation 'G', 1G meaning 1024M. The sum
of the sizes of the files must be at least 10 MB.
--

This implies that I have to preguess how large each data file will be.
Now, I understand with MyISAM tables that they just grow until they
fill up your filesystem or hit some OS limit such as the 2Gb limit in
Linux 2.4.X.

A few questions:

1) If I setup InnoDB with a 500Mb data file then suddenly run out of
space could I:
 * seemlessly just stack another data file by adjusting my startup
options
 * seemlessly just make the data file larger by changing the file size
(i.e. don't add another datafile, just increase the file size)

2) Is there a way to make this more dynamic?
 * what if a user wants to add a 10Mb blob into my database, but the
datafile has only 5Mb of space left for data...
(with MyISAM tables they just seem to grow as needed)

Re: mysql replication protocol

2002-08-31 Thread David Lloyd

Paul,

(mysql, query)

It *can* use TCP, but that's just the transport protocol through which
the replication information is processed. Replication can also be
done between two servers on the same host, using a UNIX socket or (on
a Windows box) a named pipe. The replication protocol itself is
 MySQL-specific.

I would assume, then, that if it were done over TCP/IP that one could
setup ipsec to secure it.

Just out of interest (and hit me if it's in the manual somewhere ;-P),
does the replication protocol offer any cryptographically secure method
of replication if one wants it?

Paul et al,

 At 18:59 -0400 8/31/02, qlarry wrote:

 What?

I think that loosely should translate as Where is a file size limit in
MySQL which I would then interpret as Is there a file size limit in
MySQL.

All MyISAM tables are stored on the local file system so it is dependant
on the file system and operating system you are running. Or to put it
another way, your MyISAM table (MySQL's default type) are stored as
files, and it is your operating system that limits the file size and not
MySQL.

As for other types such as BDB and InnoDB I don't know the answer.

I hope this helps.

Re: *****SPAM***** when I installed mysql 3.23.43

Dave

[ mysql query]

when I installed mysql 3.23.43 it instructed me to be sure to add a password with
the following results-
 :
 seaport2:/# /usr/mysql/bin/mysqladmin -u root -p password 'new-password'
 Enter password:
/usr/mysql/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: YES)'

Read the man pages for mysqladmin for full details on all options (there
are lots of them ;-P).

The option -p is the password you use to connect to the server,
however on a default installation you should specify no password.
Essentially what you're doing is saying:

Connect me to the server at 'localhost' with the password 'password'
and user 'root'

...which is NOT what you want to do because the default databases don't
expect a password _at all_ [which is why it is strongly suggested you
change the passsword]

Drop the -p so it looks like:

/usr/mysql/bin/mysqladmin -uroot password 'newpassword'

Also, don't forget to flush the privileges after changing the password.
