Perhaps I fail to catch the humour in your response, or the flavour of this
newsgroup, but I find your answer in no way helpful, and beyond that quite
insulting to Access.

1. I have developed applications in Access comprising over 1000 tables, some
of which contain millions of rows, with numerous complex relationships and
C++ components that interfaced to instruments such as scales, scanners, etc.
I am not the only one to push Access that far.

2. To answer Andrew's question, the answer is No. MySQL does not support
defined relationships. The InnoDB extension provides this support.

3. Unfortunately, as of this writing neither MySQL nor InnoDB supports
defined queries (Oracle and SQL Server call them Views). Allegedly, MySQL
4.1 will support stored procedures (and I for one hope that views make it
into the build).

Actually, no. The addiction to MySQL has caused many relationship
break-ups.
There's probably even a database with that information out there
somewhere.
Probably a MySQL database, too. Meanwhile Access supports relationships
because it blows so hard that people can't wait to get away from it and
home
 to their families.

 Hello Everyone.

I'm still fairly a newbie to MySQL, but I could have sworn I read
somewhere that MySQL supported relationships just like Access. I've
searched the entire manual, and cannot find anything on the subject.
Does MySQL support relationships, and if so does anyone know where I can
find any info on the topic? Thanks!

Alright, I'm feeling pretty clueless on this one.

I've downloaded and installed MyODBC.

I am trying to go from my local WinXP to my database on a unix/apache

I have asked my ISP to grant remote access and he says he has. I can
access from a phpMyAdmin on one webserver to a db on the other webserver
fine. But when I try to access with ODBC, using the same
username/password it's no go.

RE: MySQL and stored procedures - v4.1 :(

2002-04-12 Thread Land, Christopher

5.2.12 Other Optimisation Tips
http://www.mysql.com/doc/T/i/Tips.html

...
- Normally you should try to keep all data non-redundant (what is called 3rd
normal form in database theory), but you should not be afraid of duplicating
things or creating summary tables if you need these to gain more speed.

- Stored procedures or UDF (user-defined functions) may be a good way to get
more performance. In this case you should, however, always have a way to do
this some other (slower) way if you use some database that doesn't support
this.

- You can always gain something by caching queries/answers in your
application and trying to do many inserts/updates at the same time. If your
database supports lock tables (like MySQL and Oracle), this should help to
ensure that the index cache is only flushed once after all updates.

Subject: RE: MySQL and stored procedures - v4.1 :(

Checked my own version and found it to be Ver 11.16 Distrib 3.23.49.

He, version 11??? Quit confused, but after a sanity check with reality
I realized I must be using version 3.23. Anyhow, check the status of
next version and found out that version 4.0 is in alpha mode...
The Ver 11.16 refers to the version of the MySQL *client* utility.
Distrib 3.23.49, as you figured out is which version of MySQL it was
distributed with.

Geeeze - not even beta. So I guess even an estimate when the first
alpha of version 4.1 is virtually impossible to give right now, or?
I'll trust a MySQL alpha release before the final production releases of
most vendors. In fact, we're using 4.0.1 in our production environment with
great success.

From the manual:

*alpha indicates that the release contains some large section of new code
that hasn't been 100% tested. Known bugs (usually there are none) should be
documented in the News section. See section D MySQL change history. There
are also new commands and extensions in most alpha releases. Active
development that may involve major code changes can occur on an alpha
release, but everything will be tested before doing a release. There should
be no known bugs in any MySQL release.
*beta means that all new code has been tested. No major new features that
could cause corruption on old code are added. There should be no known bugs.
A version changes from alpha to beta when there haven't been any reported
fatal bugs within an alpha version for at least a month and we don't plan to
add any features that could make any old command more unreliable.
*gamma is a beta that has been around a while and seems to work fine. Only
minor fixes are added. This is what many other companies call a release.
*If there is no suffix, it means that the version has been run for a while
at many different sites with no reports of bugs other than platform-specific
bugs. Only critical bug fixes are applied to the release. This is what we
call a stable release.

But anyway. When could one expect to find a first alpha version of 4.1?
 Sometimes during 2003? Or?
The manual makes allusions to an early 2002 release for 4.1, but I think
that's probably slipped somewhat. Late 2002/early 2003 seems more likely.
However, be aware that the fact that they plan on having stored procedures
in 4.1, does not guarantee that they actually will have stored procedures.
Often times, a feature cannot be implemented as efficiently as Monty et al
would like, or other features become a higher priority and things get put
off for a while. (*ahem* sub-selects -- when I started using 3.20.x they
were supposed to be in 3.21.x, then 3.22.x, then...)

RE: Connection -- Can't open named pipe error

2002-04-11 Thread Land, Christopher

http://www.mysql.com/doc/W/i/Windows_vs_Unix.html

Can't open named pipe error
If you use a MySQL 3.22 version on NT with the newest mysql-clients you will
get the following error:
error 2017: can't open named pipe to host: . pipe...

This is because the release version of MySQL uses named pipes on NT by
default. You can avoid this error by using the --host=localhost option to
the new MySQL clients or create an option file `C:\my.cnf' that contains the
following information:
[client]
host = localhost

Starting from 3.23.50, named pipes are only enabled if mysqld is started
with --enable-named-pipe.

The web application is running in an environment *outside* of the server,
compared to your context, which may be 'root@localhost', for instance.

The browser's context, then, might be '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'; thus, you will
need to add an entry to m,ysql.user table.

It seems that an internet connection from a browser to my unix/apache hosted
mysql database presents itself as some user to whom I haven't yet given
permissions because the calling web page gives up without a whimper. I have
generous permissions for 'root', 'nobody' and 'localhost'. The perl script
works fine from my shell acount (through a socket) and works up till the
connect statement in the browser. How can I 'identify' the browser or change
the script to accomodate a browser connection.

thanks,
Henry de Jong

I have two mysql servers in a machine. OS is linux and system is dell.
I ran the servers in a separate datadir, socket and port yesterday. But
after six hours from the start two of them corrupted accidently.
I ran two servers from remote terminal. And there was no problem until
I exited from the terminal. But... as soon as I typed exit to exit
from
terminal, some error messages appeared on my screen. And two
servers stopped. After corruption one of them restarted automatically
but the other couldn't restart automatically. This is error message
from the server

Do you have any idea why the server corrupted?

I can show you my mysql.server script. Here is this.

i got a MySQL database that my supervisor wats me to do an ER diagram
for. The problem is that there is no/not much documentation on this
database. Also one cannot draw an ER-Diagram by looking at the mySQL-
Database, since there is no way (i know of) i can defining logical
relationships especially when a column names for the same attribute are
different between the tables.

Is there some Tutorials/fact sheets/program/information to do this?

I allready have a simple quick-n-dirty implementation running
on our local mysql servers (using spades instead of pigeons),
so it shouldn't be too difficult to phase this development
into the main cvs-trunk later.

The only problem I wasn't yet able to resolve reliably
is to store the three possible values into one bit, hence
I'm using two bits for the decision logic and call this
three-valued boolean storage unit a 'peck'. But it's my
feeling, that there must be better a solution; after all
if a qbit can hold 4 values (as modern physics says), why
shouldn't a peck be able to mark 3 possibilities (or even
4 if you count 'not-yet-pecked' as the fourth).

Working on it.

4.8.5 mysqldump, Dumping Table Structure and Data

Utility to dump a database or a collection of database for backup or for
transferring the data to another SQL server (not necessarily a MySQL
server). The dump will contain SQL statements to create the table and/or
populate the table.

If you are doing a backup on the server, you should consider using the
mysqlhotcopy instead. See section 4.8.6 mysqlhotcopy, Copying MySQL
Databases and Tables.

...

However, it's also very useful to populate another MySQL server with
information from a database:

mysqldump --opt database | mysql --host=remote-host -C database

RE: 1 table many fields/several tables less fields?

2002-03-25 Thread Land, Christopher

Here are the 5 Rules of Data Normalization --
http://www.datamodel.org/NormalizationRules.html

Eliminate Repeating Groups
- Make a separate table for each set of related attributes, and give
each table a primary key.

Eliminate Redundant Data
- If an attribute depends on only part of a multi-valued key, remove
it to a separate table.

Eliminate Columns Not Dependent On Key
- If attributes do not contribute to a description of the key,
remove them to a separate table.

Isolate Independent Multiple Relationships
- No table may contain two or more 1:n or n:m relationships that are
not directly related.

Isolate Semantically Related Multiple Relationships
- There may be practical constrains on information that justify
separating logically related many-to-many relationships.

Subject: 1 table many fields/several tables less fields?

Greetings. I would thank some feedback on this issue. The doubt is:
Should i create a table, with about 40-65 fields (ID, 3 or 4 of text, the
reamining of small/tiny int), or should i split it in about 4-6 tables,
dividing the fields between them?
Info:
The database would be read/write by PHP, and it would have around 1500-2500
users (distributed by the day), with about 150 queries each user. In each
query, around 10-20 fields values would be needed. The queries would mainly
be SELECT and UPDATE...

I did read the optimisation part in the manual, particularly:

It's not normally useful to split a table into different tables just
because the rows gets 'big'.
From http://www.mysql.com/doc/T/i/Tips.html , Other Optimisation Tips.

http://www.mysql.com/doc/C/r/Creating_many_tables.html, Drawbacks to
Creating Large Numbers of Tables in the Same Database

but still didnt got an straight answer for my precise case. Unfortunally i'm
new at this (both MySQL and PHP), so i apolozige for any mistake/stupidity
presented in the question... :)

I will, in lack of contrary info, use 1 table with many fields...

Thank you for any comments.

MySQL Myths Debunked was originally my attempt to provide a solid

Seems like I wasn't the only one who needed it. The response to

You should use mysqldump[.exe] to export/import, on the respective systems:

I installed theses packages using the RH RPM Manager.

RE: select count distinct

The following may assist: (three-fifths down)

http://www.mysql.com/doc/G/r/Group_by_functions.html

Note that if you are using MySQL Version 3.22 (or earlier) or if you are
trying to follow ANSI SQL, you can't use expressions in GROUP BY or ORDER BY
clauses. You can work around this limitation by using an alias for the
expression:

mysql SELECT id,FLOOR(value/100) AS val FROM tbl_name
   GROUP BY id,val ORDER BY val;

Sorry, I know this is documented somewhere, because I've seen it,
but I can't find it now, nor remember exactly what it said.

When I try to connect to the mysql server (mysql -u root -p table),
I get an error about /tmp/mysql.sock.

I've searched both http://lists.mysql.com/ and
http://www.mysql.com/manual.php using the available search functions,
and leafed through Paul's mysql book and can't find it, which drives
me bats because I KNOW I've seen it somewhere

Anyway, what is the problem here? Do I have to take it down and start
it up again? I'm pretty sure the problem is that the file has been
deleted, probably a cron job, but I can't remember the fix. Tried
touching it to make it exist again, but of course no go.

(And a pointer to the documentation would be welcomed, too...)

Thanks,

Subject: triggers, stored procedures, and views

I am building a database system and have been, like many before me, quite
surprised that MySQL doesn't support triggers, sp's, and views. I can see
how one can get around not having views with advanced permissions, as stated
in the manual, although as I understand it this is no substitue for views-
it is simply a workaround.

I want to be very clear in explicating my understanding that MysQL is an
open source technology, and putting it next to MS sQL Server 7 is not a fair
comparison, as MS has invested many millions in that product over the years
developing features...as has Oracle. It's kind of like putting AbiWord next
to MS Word...apples to oranges...

But not having triggers DOES make implementation of a transactional layer
very difficult. I'm wondering if anyone that has encountered this problem
and found a suitable solution would be so kind as to share his/her
experience with myself and the rest of the list? Or do the developers have
any suggestions?

Perhaps a collection of Perl scripts sending records to a transactional
table as well as the main data tables??? but then I would have to code this
for all the different operations that take place when one of the data
editors touches the database.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to approach this subject and share their
experiences.

Regards,

jd
