space for each table itself(in GB).Database wise, also

my sql and patter matching ....bug(Urgent)

2001-06-18 Thread VVM Ravikumar Sarma Chengalvala

Hi,
I am facing the following problem in pattern matching:
I want to check the pattern matching using LIKE on a
field that is declared as Binary and also contains
back slashes.
eg:
ID INT,
NAME VARCHAR(128) BINARY

I am using C-API of mysql to escape the characters
like '\'  for this field.

The samples field values for the above are:
XYZ\ABC,PQR\ABC,DEFABC.

If I use the follwoing statement for pattrn matching:
SELECT NAME FROM [TABLE-NAME] WHERE NAME LIKE
%\\ABC%
.

Tried the other way too like this:
SELECT NAME FROM [TABLE-NAME] WHERE NAME LIKE
%\\ABC%
it returns all the three values instead of only two
Is this a bug or what is the solution.

Regards,
Ravi

RE: My sql database and faster queries

2001-06-06 Thread VVM Ravikumar Sarma Chengalvala

Hi,
THe maximum number of table joins I ned is not more
than three.Most of the search criteria is based on
Unique or Primary keys and hence I did not opt for
indexing.I am using the default myISAM table types of
mysql and mysql C_API.
Previously someone suggested using C_API functions
over joins will make the queries run faster.The
database may have to search for all the queries from
about 10 rows in each table.

My sql queries...Which is better??

2001-06-03 Thread VVM Ravikumar Sarma Chengalvala

Hi,
I am using my sql CAPI.I am able to access the
database well but there is one performance issue that
came into my mind.

Is it better to have a single query on multiple tables
using joins?
   (OR)
Multiple queries without joins on each table,in a
sequential order .

If I use joins also,there won't be more than 3 tables.
I got the issue especially keeping in view of the
factor that I am using C API and I can achieve the
effect of having joins through C/C++ language.

Ravi

 This is not entirely correct. ODBC is merely just
 one more way to connect
 to MySQL. MySQL just like many other databases in
 the industry has an API
 which can be used to connect to the server with out
 going through all the
 Microsoft imposed protocols such as ODBC ADO.

 A good example of this is PHP (http://www.php.net) .
  In general, PHP does
 not use nor require ODBC to be installed in order to
 access a MySQL
 database.

 So is the case for Zeos (http://www.zeoslib.org/)
 which is a free set of
 components for accessing MySQL (and other databases)
 directly by means of
 the API calls rather than ODBC (for Delphi C++
 Builder).

 In terms of Microsoft's software, which all support
 ActiveX, there is at
 least one COM object that I know of that can connect
 directly to MySQL
 without using MyODBC. Such component is called
 MySQLX and can be found in
 http://www.scibit.com .

  You CAN connect to a MySQL database without a DSN

 uses

My sql and BINARY column?

2001-05-30 Thread VVM Ravikumar Sarma Chengalvala

Hi,
I wonder to know whether declaring a column as BINARY
will take the characters like \,' etc into binary form
and stores it in the database?

Then we may not need to specify the escape sequences..

Ravi

Re: MYSQL performance question

2001-05-22 Thread VVM Ravikumar Sarma Chengalvala

Joshua,

 Comparing Oracle vs. MySQL myisam tables, MySQL will
 save disk space, and provide you with much faster
queries, but you have to be aware of the table
locking issues if you are doing
updates/inserts/deletes mixed  with reads.
MySql documentation says that mysql enforces
table level locking if no explicit locking is there.If
I am using non transaction sensitive tables can I go
ahead without providing any explicit locking?I am
using myISAM.

  Hi  Help!

  I would like to store some short binary data
 (encrypted). I used a
  varchar(24) binary field for this.
  But it seems that MySQL cuts white-spaces from the
 end when storing the
  data in the table. When the encrypted string now
 has a white-space at
  end, MySQL will cut it and this will result in a
 wrong decryption (next
  time when the string is read and decrypted).

  When using TinyBlob instead of varchar binary, all
 works fine. Is this a
  feature of varchar binary? In my opinion, binary
 data shouldn't be
  trimmed!

  Please answer me via mail as I don't receive the

 Hi!

 mysql_escape_string() will escape all chars
 properly. I use it
 everyday in many programs without a single glitch.

 You probably did not pass a correct parameters, as
 mysql_escape_string
 will escape them properly. Here is an excerpt from
 the function
 itself:

 switch (*from) {
 case 0: /* Must be escaped for 'mysql' */
   *to++= '\\';
   *to++= '0';
   break;
 case '\n':/* Must be escaped for logs */
   *to++= '\\';
   *to++= 'n';
   break;
 case '\r':
   *to++= '\\';
   *to++= 'r';
   break;
 case '\\':
   *to++= '\\';
   *to++= '\\';
   break;
 case '\'':
   *to++= '\\';
   *to++= '\'';
   break;
 case '': /* Better safe than sorry */
   *to++= '\\';
   *to++= '';
   break;
 case '\032': /* This gives problems on Win32
 */
   *to++= '\\';
   *to++= 'Z';
   break;
 default:
   *to++= *from;

 As you can see '\\' is escaped too...

Re: Bug in CAPI of My Sql

2001-05-14 Thread VVM Ravikumar Sarma Chengalvala

Hi Sinisa,

Thanks for spending the time.Here are few observations
on mysql_escape_string().I have checked it up and
found to be working but with the following problems.
i)
It works well when I want to insert strings like:
'xyz or x'yz.
ii)
When I use x\yz with the function I see a junk
character appearing like x(junt char)yz in mysql
console window and as x|yz in GUI window.
Please note that the line shown ablove appears as a
thick line.
iii)
If I want to store something like\x\yz,it even
ignores the first backslash.
iv)
This happens when I pass it through the
function.Otherwise if I send something like\\x\\yz
directly without going through the function then it
stores it as \x\yz.
v)
This is the problem with the function itself or shall
I have to do something else.
Regards,
Ravi

 Here is an example from C++ :

   char* s = new char[in.size()*2+1];
   mysql_escape_string(s, const_castchar
 *(in.c_str()), in.size() );

 Actually, it is quite simple :

 unsigned long mysql_escape_string(char *to,const
 char *from,  unsigned long from_length);

 You pass to char array of at least 2 * from_length +
 1 bytes. You pass
 original char array as a second parameter and it's
 total length as a third
 parameter.

 The above function returns a new length of `to' char
 array.

additional \ when a single '\' comes as a part of
string.For example:
I want to insert a File path like \Program
Files\xy\xyz.geo I n expecting the function
mysql_escape_string() to convert it into \\Program
Files\\xy\\xyz.geo which it is not doing precisely.

Am I right in my perspective?i.e mysql_escape_string
does not provide support for a single backslash
characher which comes as part of the string.
Even the function code which you have sent does not
say anything about it.
Shall I have to write a small code to replace '\' with
a '\\'?
Then :Is it a Bug?
3.
Once again thanks for your patience .I am putting down
the problem in detail as it provides scope for
improvement in next version.

Ravi

 Here is an example from C++ :

   char* s = new char[in.size()*2+1];
   mysql_escape_string(s, const_castchar
 *(in.c_str()), in.size() );

 Actually, it is quite simple :

 unsigned long mysql_escape_string(char *to,const
 char *from,  unsigned long from_length);

 You pass to char array of at least 2 * from_length +
 1 bytes. You pass
 original char array as a second parameter and it's
 total length as a third
 parameter.

 The above function returns a new length of `to' char
 array.

Hi ,
Infact I tried it out that way.There is a problem with
my_sql_real_escape_string() .I.e at the time of
linking it is giving an Unresolved External Symbol for
this function.For rest of the API functions it's OK.
I checked up with the .def file in the includes
directory and found that this functionis not listed in
that.Tried it out with another download of MYSQL but
same is the case.

Bug in CAPI of My Sql

2001-05-12 Thread VVM Ravikumar Sarma Chengalvala

Hi,
1.
I am using MySQL3.23 on WindowsNT4.0 platform.
2.
Whenever I try to use mysql_real_escape_string()
method,it works well with the compiler and fails while
linking.I am using VC++6.0 as environment .The reason
that I have traced out is:
i)
The function mysql_real_escape_string() is not coming
in the downloaded MySQL.I have checked up the .def
file in the Includes directory and found that the
function is not there in the .def file as well.
ii)
Then I tried to use mysql_escape_string(),but the
documentation says to use mysql-real_escape-string.
iii)
Pl note that mysql_escape_string is present in the
.def file in the includes directory but not
mysql_real_escape_string().
3.
I request you to suggest remedy for the same.

"Error on delete of '.\dbhub\data_source_type.MYI'
(Errcode: 13)"

Can someone let me know the reason.It works fine
sometimes.But the behaviour is not consistent.

Regards,
Ravi
