JH There is no skip_locking-option in /etc/my.cnf. I removed the string

JH when I do mysqladmin variables it reports sklip_locking ON.
JH Where do I turn it off?
Internal locking is always used. If you want to use external
locking you should change start-up script to enable external locking.
